Should I plant an American Beech, Chestnut Oak, River Birch, Sugar Maple, or Tulip Poplar Tree on my residential lot?
I have confirmed with my county extension that all of these tree types are native to my area (New Jersey) and thus would be a good fit to plant. I am replacing two silver Maples that were sickly and planted too close to my house. They were about 50' tall when I took them down.
I am hoping to plant one large tree and eventually a couple dogwoods in other areas.
My property is roughly 1 acre on a quiet 1 street neighborhood which is surrounded by some newer suburban neighborhoods.
I am looking for any information you can give on what are the positives and negatives of the trees above.
EDIT: Thanks so much for all of the great information. I'm continuing to read and learn, and based on a lot of the feedback I am no longer considering the river birch.

Beech tree, is it dying? Some of the leaves are beginning to curl up and fall off the tree. The lower leaves have a bunch of brown spots on it. Over the last 3-4 days this has started happening.
