Mine don’t :( that give me crap about it and practically beg me to quit
I’m starting to get the hang of reading music notes, but it still takes me a while to recognize them on a staff. What helps with memorizing? (I play the clarinet.)
I have been tasked with researching a discourse community for my Comp 1 class. I chose to research band. By answering this survey you will be helping my grade an immense amount. Thank you to all who answers this.
So the other day we had a band contest for my jh band. We learned two professional level pieces in around 2 weeks. We were really good at it and sounded great. The judges gave us a 3 on our performance and we were angry. The best day, I walked into class and there was a circle of chairs around a table. So we were just chilling until my bd came in. He got on his podium and started talking about how proud of us he was and how we did amazing. At one point I could hear his voice shaking and his face getting red. A couple seconds slater when he was done talking, he told us the he was about to cry because of he proud he was. Then he threw us a little class party that i won’t forget.🥺❤️
My high school jazz band festival is tomorrow and I forgot one of my pieces called sugar by stanly turrentine arranged by mark Taylor. If anybody has this sheet music it would make my year if you could do it to me. I am a first trombone that will most likely be dead tomorrow. Thank you guys
Okay, how do I start. Im a clarinet student at a music school in the town of Cidra, Puerto Rico. Last semester, we were invited to compete in the Dominican Replubic, but that got cancled because of some issues. So, we decided to go to Orlando, for the Orlandofest instead. We were in track for that trip, but something else emerged.
So, you know the Puertorican Parade in New York? Yeah, this year it is dedicated to the town of Cidra, in which my school is. We kind of got invited to play there, along with other ensembles of our school. This is great and all, but there is a slight problem. Being a parade, it is requiered to march. We are not a marching band, so this concerns me.
The parade is in June. This means we have three months to practicefor something we have never done before, even our BD. Apart from that, we also have to raise money which is another issue.
Anyway, I just wanted to hear your thoughts on our situation, and hear any recomendations you have. Thanks!
I already know people out there are going to be upset with me saying this but hear me out
As someone who does marching band and has done other sports (Lacrosse, Track, Crew), I simply just cannot call it a sport
Now, this doesn't change the fact that marching band has extremely challenging practices that go on forever and that there is a certain amount of physical fitness that goes into it.
The main reason why I would consider marching band not a sport is because the goal of marching band is different compared to sports. I would argue that sports focus more on winning than marching band. The goal of marching band is to put on a successful performance. Are the practices intense and long? Yes, but that still doesn't change the end goal.
Another thing I'd like to argue is that marching band isn't as intense as everything else that is considered a sport. While marching band involves exercise, it just doesn't have the same intensity. Theres no high intense activity that really goes into... keep reading on reddit ➡
But not a jazz band, a pop- rock band, but boi oh boi I CAN'T FIND INSTRUMENT PLAYERS ANYWHERE. I've trued anything- on social medias, through friends, school band, near cities, everything. So this is a little cry for help. I don't know what else can i do. Has anyone else felt that? How do you recommend finding people?
Ok so let’s start this with a bit of context. I play the baritone saxophone for my high school band. I have to rent my bari from the school because baris are a lot of money. Since I have to rent it from the school it’s real old with any tune ups and finicky. In all it’s just kinda a piece of junk. So time to start with the story. My band director kept asking why I was going out of tune right after we had just tuned even though I had told him my neck cork was deflated i guess. Or maybe just flat I don’t know how to describe it anyways it wouldn’t hold my mouthpiece in place. So my bd said he would take it in to get it replaced but in the mean time he would have me use the neck from the schools other bari sax so we go grab it and he opens the cans and he stars kinda looking around and he holds up the other bari out of the case and he sees something fall. It’s a bullet and it was real old. Keep in mind I’m the only baritone sax play they have seen in over 2 decades. So he comes and shows... keep reading on reddit ➡
Hey there, I am looking to join a band to join. I am a vocalist and play the piano, guitar and drums and learning a-few others and can also read music. I would prefer any genre of music other than rock or reggae. Message me for an audio of me singing.
I want to join jazz band playing trumpet but I’ve been playing for a month now and that’s not good enough so idk if I should wait until next school year or senior year. So I would have 3 years of experience. And I also want to march playing trumpet in marching band but the marching aspect scares the hell out of me. It would totally be out of my comfort zone. I played in pit for 2 of my years in Marching band and idk what to do in my 2 other years. I want to do pit for the show and the stand tunes for trumpet which I talked to my band director about and she approved. But I’m thinking if I should march the show.
My good friend I sit in front of him in jazz band and he had to go to 7th position and then he hit the stand in front of him and it was and stair type stage and the stand( I didn’t know about) almost fell on my head and gave me a concussion. The girl who sat next to him fortunately caught it before it fell on my head.
Hey guys I’m a guitarist in my schools big band, and I’m enjoying rehearsing and performing but I’ve never really been properly musically trained, I mostly taught myself since I started (3/4 years ago), and I pretty much only really played metal and core. I can read standard notation (but I can’t properly sight read) and know chord shapes (major, minor, 7th, 9th, 13th, etc). Is there anything else I can do to improve my big band playing other than just drilling chord shapes into my head and rehearsing? Any advice is appreciated
the set list is: Bullets & Bayonets by John Phillip Sousa Sag Harbor Sunset by Robert Sheldon Bayou Breakdown by Brant Karrick March and Cortege of Bacchus from “Sylvia” by Léo Delibes
So this was basically the best experience ever. I got percussion 4th chair and played bells, toms, suspended cymbal, hi hat, snare, and bass. Music is awesome and its super fun. Also met this guy and we became friends after the first rehearsal and i gave him my number after the second and now we're homies except also flirting with each other. He says he wants to move schools just to be around me and im like wtf you are the nicest human alive. he's not gonna move but just the fact that he thought of that is crazy. so yeah honor is pretty much the best.

Its concert season y'all
The band I perform in is the top band at my school so we get to gift other performers something for the holidays. Any smart and creative ideas for crafts alongside the actual gift?(Keep in Mind I have no idea who I am gifting it to or what instrument they play.)

I just recently entered HS band and have done HS MB for 2 years, I always wanted to be a better player, in middle School band I was. But now it feels like im back in 6th grade, all my peers are better than me. My friends are playing things I couldn't hope to play. I don't have the same level of relationship I had with my old director. I still enjoy band as a community, but im not good enough for it.

So I am a senior in my high school's band/orchestra program. We're a really small school, at just over 1000 students, and this was the first year our marching program was on the map. Now that marching season is over, we're transitioning into our concert/jazz band formats. Every year our school has a performing arts assembly, where the band, dance teams, cheer, etc. all do a show (kind of like a halftime show, but in an assembly). The band usually does a funk/dance tune with a small horn band -- for example, last year, we covered Lucky Chop's arrangement of Funkytown/I Feel Good (seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RvJprI5rVU). The year before, we did Uptown Funk. Usually the instrumentation is pretty varied, we typically have a drummer on kit, bari sax, multiple tenor saxes, some altos, a few flutes, a trombone, some trumpets, that sort of thing. We've been struggling, however, to find a piece that holds that kind of funk... keep reading on reddit ➡
I play Tuba in my Schools highest Band and we are currently playing a piece titled "Triumphant Celebration" and at measure 90, there is a "Heavy Rock" part and my director wants us to play Blatty, but with good sound. I am having trouble making it sound Blatty during solo practice so tips would help.
Ok, so the tryouts for my school’s Jazz Band are tomorrow. BD asked me to play the baritone sax since I’m the only option, I said yes. Asked him if there’s a chance that I flop and don’t get in, he says yes. Redditors, what’s the chance of me not getting into the band even if he needs a bari sax player?
I would like to know what sites I could buy instruments from, I am trying to get my hands on a quality Bb Piccolo Trumpet.
When you play on stage you're a character in a band that's why its called a show
Me and my non band friends are currently in an arguement over this, so im curious what other people who are actually in MB think
I’m the Drum Major and just want to make next year fun for the kids .
So I just finished my very last marching season ever. Our team made playoffs so we had to travel pretty far for the game (3 and a half) hours away. We are a pretty big band of 270+ so we got charter buses to this game, 5 in total. Now I am a senior in high school and have never had a girlfriend, my first kiss, anything. So me, my best friend, a girl in our section, and one of our clarinet friends sat in the very back last 4 seats. On the way back we were talking about what we have done in high school and we decided to play truth or dare. We made a blanket fort and blended in because the whole bus was doing it. We started off and to make a long story short I gave the clarinet girl a hickey, had my first kiss, made out, and cuddled with a little bit of touchy feely moments in there all within the span of 2 hours. We have a band trip during spring break where we’ve already planned what we are going to do in our hotel rooms. So to say the least my very last season ended pretty spectacularl... keep reading on reddit ➡
I can’t find any sad concert band songs.
The choices are: Concert, marching, pep, jazz, and orchestra
Hey y'all. I got bored on the weekend and decided to make a discord server revolving around the musicals side of things. Here's a link lol. Join if you want: https://discord.gg/kNQ9Btp
I like lament and tribal dances, ghost dances, rephyrgeration, silverado, choreography, etc.
My friends and I want to form a band, she can sing and I can play guitar, we can also find a drummer. But the problem is that my other friend who plays piano wants to join, I don’t know if it will go well together, guitar and piano? Will it sound good? EDIT: I play acoustic guitar.
Hi, I'm a flautist in the 8th grade. I'm first chair at my school's wind ensemble and recently got into Sinfonic gt howard county band, and I heard that it was one of the most competitive counties. I tried out for all state Maryland junior band yesterday, and I thought I played well, but didnt even make it to the finals room. To anyone in all state, any advice? I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make it in.
Getting moved down because I don't want to do solo and ensemble
I'm in a band. Yeah. I need to complain about it now.
It's not something big. My girlfriend is in an engineer school, and there's a music club. She wanted to join to have a bit a fun, singing and stuff with musicians. Then I was asked to give a hand (I'm older, playing the guitar for 16 years now, a bit used to bands, concerts, etc.). So I got into it. They wanted to organize a few lives in the school an participate in other events on the campus.
I literally carry everyone and manage almost everything since then. Everyone wants to cover songs they like, and they can't ever agree; I have to spend a lot of time tempering everybody and pushing them to make concessions.
No one is working if I don't tell them to do so.
I have to make tabs for everyone. Adapt when it's not in a standard or drop-D tuning, because I'm the only one willing to carry more than one instrument.
I had to make drums backtracks for the whole first year before we get a drummer. And now we got one, he's good, but... keep reading on reddit ➡
So yea that's about it,I'm pretty nervous.
I need a good Singer is all it's a duet
Should the bass clarinet be in marching band?
I’ve been playing Trumpet for about ten years now, and a few buddies of mine and I want to start a band. The problem is that we currently have a guitarist, a bass player, a drummer, and a vocalist, but Trumpet doesn’t really fit the feel all that well. I was wondering if anybody had any advice for instruments I could learn, or something unique I could play that would fit well. I have a solid grounding in most brass instruments, and I play a decent amount of ukulele and know enough about keyboard to play chords, but I was wondering what suggestions you all might have
percussion in back fighting over who gets to play slapstick in sleigh ride
trumpet arguing who gets to make the horse sound
I'm an elementary band teacher and I had a door full of funny band jokes/memes and the kids LOVE it. Please send me your favorites!
I'm a woodwind section leader at our high school band. I'm not bad at my instrument, hell, I love playing music, but the people are driving me fucking insane. My ears have hyper sensitivity so the noise of drums, football games, etc cause them to ring. I used to enjoy band for once and now I just don't see the point in it. Idk if it's just a phase but this has been going on since June/July and it hasn't changed since. Don't get me wrong, I like some people including our director, but I dread going to band class some days. I just don't want to disappoint the director. I don't know what to do. I don't want to let everyone down. Not that they would miss me...
So basically, I had this cool idea where I asked myself: "what if band took place in a fantasy world?" And then I thought of this.
What I'm thinking is that each section of band referrers to the style, while the instrument family refers to their specialty.
Then, no matter which band they were in, the instrument families would all focus on virtually the same function.
After that, the instruments in each family would do the same thing, but be used for different purposes.
My Marching band (SEHS) songs are completely boring and generic. It’s come to the point where it’s embarrassing and makes me want to quit every game.
PLEASE Any Marching band songs that are new and popular will be GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Edit: Sorry I haven’t responded to your posts, I just now woke up. Also Thank you all so much for your recommendations.
I have literally no experience with french horn, I know how to sight read, hear notes, and all of that stuff from both of my parents teaching me at a young age( ex- BD and a conductor) and I just need for tips for French horn and yeah. Pls help
p.s. i played the organ for 5 years before two years ago the the piano.
Im a young guitarist who recently formed a band with another guitarist who i am best friends with and the most experienced drummer in my school. the other guitarist had a freakout about not having a bassist for a week, then straight up invited someone behind my back. and the best part is: they've never played bass and get offended super easily. i told him that was a bad decision and he fought me for weeks. Instead, he made me kick out the drummer (mind you i've known him for about 5 years and have been in two bands previsily with him). he said that the drummer "didn't take the project seriously enough." i decided to talk to him again recently about the bassist, and he said " I thought we were just having fun. stop being so serious about this" then told me he has a crush on the bassist and wants them to break up with their boyfriend, whom i'm better friends with then anyone. I so done with his stubborn attitude, but he's fun to be in a band with and agrees with almost everything else i... keep reading on reddit ➡
Not really sure if this is the place for it but I'm graduating a year early (junior year) next year and I'm staying in band until then but I enjoy playing the trumpet (played for about 8 ish years) and want to do it even after high school. Any suggestions for like a group or program I could look in to, I was considering going to college for a field related to it but I have another career path planned out.
I have the basic thing just any extra tips ty
In my band there is this drink that is passed around on the bus before and after games. It's a very specific concoction, and only one person has been able to make it 100% accurately (The Creator).
Anyway, here's the recipe, if i remember correctly:
• 1.5 Fl oz of original flavor Mt. Dew
• 1.5 Fl oz of original flavor Monster Energy Drink
• (Optional) 1 Fl oz of Pink Lemonade
• One Peppa Pig themed Juice bottle with sports type lid
So pretty much, you just mix them all together and drink it to your heart's content. Drink responsibly.
yes as u read the title , i am officially done with band . like legit . firstly, the band seniors in my section secretly hates me like whenever they talked to another junior in my section , they will act nice and start making jokes with them. BUT with me , they act all stucked up and i felt like slapping each of their faces into tomorrow ! secondly, the seniors from other sections , seriously have problem with the juniors . like they hate the juniors or sth . plus , the band seniors are a GOSSIPING MACHINES . like they will practically gossip here and there NON STOP !! and f*** it tomorrow i have band practice . god damn it . and the worst thing about the seniors is that they are SO demanding. they will always like demand you to remember a certain scale or you will get detention or punishment. like that is so gay come on . i hope to find more people who also hate band !
I want to know if anyone else on this Reddit participated in Band Day and what section you were in. It really was fun and I can’t wait until next year!
Ok so like i said in the title i play the bari sax and my high school conductor was gone for the day. So he had a student conduct and he was getting super mad at me cause i was "not playing my part right" and i had all the altos look at my music and they said i was playing it right (only bari sax) and he flipped out. so i go look at the score and he was looking at the baritone (Brass instrument pic: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71Hst1xYVXL._SY679_.jpg ) so i said that that's the wrong part and half the band yelled at me and said they were the same exact instrument and i was so disappointed in everyone.
There was this relatively easy band song that I played with my junior high school band. I can't remember what it is called but at the beginning the members of the band whisper "Just as time passes, so do memories pass as well. But those who stirred our spirits live on in our hearts."
I know this is a long shot but does anyone know what I am talking about?
