And also not The Stand.

Been reading some nonfiction in this space (Spillover, currently, by David Quammen - highly recommend), and am feeling an itch to read something terrifying in fiction along the same lines. The aforementioned The Stand and The Andromeda Strain are the only two I know of in this space. And I do love zombie books, but the comments would be filled with them if not disqualified.

[Looney Tunes] Marvin the Martian is wearing a face mask to protect himself from earth bacteria.

Marvin the Martian is a popular Looney Tunes character he has large eyes on a pitch blackhead. he has no nose or mouth but speaks clearly. after a year of masking for covid, I like to think Marvin has a normal face and he's wearing a face mask to protect himself from Earth's bacteria. Interestingly enough every other alien species we see in the classic Looney Tunes has a mouth and a nose so it does seem weird how his species is the only one without them.

Why do prebiotics only feed the "good" bacteria?

One thing that I've never understood, it's well established in GI circles that prebiotics are essential for good gut health. But what happens if you already have a dysbiosis and you start taking prebiotics? Wouldn't you be feeding the bad bacteria as well, causing them to replicate and making the problem worse? Or do only the "good" bacteria eat prebiotic fibers?

Further to the above, now I'm seeing a lot of talk about "postbiotics". Are these worth supplementing as well as prebiotics? Perhaps we should be supplementing all 3, prebiotics to feed the good bacteria, probiotics to help restore a good balance (and these probiotics can eat the prebiotics to grow further), and postbiotics for general health?

Edit: some really great answers here, thanks everyone.
