Now the big question is should I wait until I get rejected from my top school (cu Boulder is my # 2) before accepting or accept now to get an early start on dorming and such.
Hi everyone!
My daughter (8) is big on astronomy and the mysteries of outer space in general. I'm sure she'll join this subreddit or something similar when she grows up. In the meantime to provoke her further learning, I wrote a quiz for her to pass (which if she does she'll get her next book) ... I wonder if any of you could take this test and tell me if the wording on any questions is poor, straight-up incorrect, etc. I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject myself, is the reason I ask.
https://forms.gle/q8hWrbdb7xdXxjkV7
Edit: I was updating the quiz and it seems I deleted over half of it, sorry I'm kind of depressed... going to slowly rebuild it...
Edit2: It's back up in its entirety, I deleted all the earlier responses to refresh the results. Thanks everyone for your great input, I'm sure it will go a long way!
Edit3: I've changed several of the questions to be more accurate with your advice, in doing so the answers have been reset in the final tally. I don't know if you can see the same results as I do, but by now several of you (over 900) have taken the test since I've reset the results. Thank you for your help!
I'd really like to connect with some folks that are into this. It's my primary interest and pastime and I have 0 friends/acquaintances here practicing it. My life basically revolves around it and all that passion is bottled up with no one to talk to about it!
I know of one guy, a Youtuber, and I've chatted with him intermittently, but I'd really like to find some friends to chat about it, lend and borrow gear from, and just get excited together.
And I'm also a NASA engineer, doctor, military verean, pornstar, pro-minecraft speedrunner, firefighter, actor, miner, police officer, farmer, bill gates, CEO of amazon and spider-man but I like to stay anonymous so you have to take my word for it and can confirm that:
Dream cheated his speed runs.

... keep reading on reddit โกI have my Bachelors and Honours (~Masters) in Physics and Mathematics, and am now doing my PhD in Astronomy at Oxbridge with a couple of years remaining. My work is in computational astrophysics, running massive magnetohydrodynamical simulations and analysing that data. In undergrad I did do a few courses and projects related to seismology, VLBI (geodesy), and atmospheric physics, but they were folded into other physics courses so nothing on my resume would scream "geophysics".
I've looked online for advice but much of what I can find (a) isn't for computational geophysics, or (b) assumes a geo background. Since I'll already have a PhD, I'm not too keen to do another degree for geophysics and would prefer to pivot with what I have if possible.
I guess my main questions are:
Is there much money in computational and data analysis work, or is it all in the fieldwork/engineering roles?
Is it possible to get an entry level job even though my PhD is in Astronomy? Happy to lean back on the two degrees in physics and maths if they're more useful.
Are short online courses worth anything if you lack the specific geophysics qualifications?
I'm not entirely sure on country yet, but I'd be looking in Australia, preferably WA as I have family there. Other options would be UK and France, but I don't have citizenship or permanent residency so that'd limit things.
"Space. An endless scape void of anything except for the occasional mixture of hydrogen and helium held together by gravity. Every so often, you get a clump of rocks that get caught in the gravity, and they start to move in circles around it because that's just how it works. Every so often out of that, one of those clumps of rocks pointlessly rotating around a mixture of gasses gets caught in just the right place where water can liquify, and because of laws and science or whatever other bullshit, life occurs."
I rolled my eyes, preparing for another one of my friend Austin's passionate rants about how arbitrary the concept of life is. "Yeah." I replied. "Thanks for explaining to me how we're all here. Can I go now? I've got class early tomorrow."
"No no no, just listen to me man. What is stopping the idea that life can exist in other forms? Beings adapted to live in any conditions? I mean we've seen it with the tardigrade. It can survive the vacuum of space. Who is saying being similar to that nature and maybe even intelligent aren't out there somewhere? Laws that humans, who don't know everything, have deemed fact? Answer me that!"
"You sound ridiculous dude." I said, slinging my backpack over my shoulder and exiting the lab.
"You know I'm right!" Austin called out behind me as I walked away.
Ah sorry, I should probably introduce myself. My names Carter, I'm a 22 year old college Senior, and for the last 4 years I've been studying Astronomy. Something about space, the unknown, so much to explore and learn, it's always intrigued me. I mean think about it, we are a tiny blue island in the middle of a massive void, and we don't even know how big it is. Of course, all of this was how I felt before I found out what I know, but we'll get to that in due time.
I met Austin during Freshman year. When I was looking for roommates I put that I would prefer someone who is also an astronomy major, and he ended up being my roommate. We became best friends very quickly. Countless late night talks about the universe and what may be in it. With a mutual passion, we both loved staying out late and looking at planets and stars through our telescope. We also loved staying late at the lab and doing research. Call us nerds, but we loved it.
Over the past few months though, Austin had began to get obsessed. He started talking about a new energy wave he had discovered. Apparently if done right, it could be used for travel across the universe in seconds. "Opening up w

Can anyone recommend a reliable scientific journal for astronomy? Iโm extremely interested in learning more about whatโs out there.
