Avi Loeb is chair of Harvard Astronomy, and is well-known in the scientific community, partially because of his penchant for writing very short and dramatic papers. Over the past few years a large portion of the Astronomy community has soured on him due to a number of highly speculative papers published on aliens (there's now a dedicated twitter account to tracking his claims of aliens).
