Astragalus Root

I have posted a few responses in other threads about this natural supplement astragalus root, but thought it would be worth creating a thread of its own over. I am amazed at what it has done for my numbers.

Little about me: 30m fitness competitor/bodybuilder recently diagnosed with C3G disease.

September Numbers: Creatinine 2.04 BUN 44 EGFR 42 Protein Spillage: 8632mg

November Numbers: Creatine: 1.31 BUN: 25 EGFR 73 Protein Spillage: 6000mg

When I found out I had this disease they wanted to put me on high dose prednisone and Cellcept immediately... the side effects seem shitty so I decided to first try my own hand at getting into remission. Being a fitness and nutrition nut my whole life I love problem solving my body and finding the most optimal method for me (we are all different so what works for me may not work for you). So first I lowered my calories, removed most all carbs, started intermittent fasting, and stuck to mostly natural organic salads with chicken and similar. Tracked my potassium, sodium, and steered clear of most phosphates. I believe this helped a lot, as the kidneys were less taxed. Then I started the natural supplement astragalus root ... 300 capsules of 500mg each are only $19.99 at vitamin shoppe. It is a natural supplement used for centuries in China for all kinds of ailments ... especially renal issues. Studies have shown it to have a great improvement on not only creatinine, BUN, eGFR, but also on protein spillage. I did 4g a day up until this blood work/urinalysis and the results on astragalus and off were astoundingly different. I also am on losartan for the protein spillage ... losartan usually hurts my kidney numbers so to improve the numbers while on losartan is awesome. I drink 1.25 gallons of fluid a day. I just upped my dose of astragalus root to 10g/day and hope to have removed at least another 2000mg of protein spillage by end of December. At this rate if I can keep it up I should be able to hit remission in 4-6 months. The most optimal route of kidney improvement for me has been: losartan, diet/IF/low carbs, and astragalus root.

Below please see some literature on the benefits of astragalus root. I would always consult with your doctor before doing/taking anything, but I think this cheap natural supplement could help a lot more people if they were made aware of it.

Astragalus root supplements

I used to have moderate palmar hyperhidrosis. My palms were always varying degrees of moist, from slightly damp to so wet that I was unable to swipe/type on my phone.

About 2 years ago, I bought the Dermadry iontophoresis machine. For a few months, I did the treatments religiously. It was pretty effective for me. After just 3 weeks, my palms were mostly dry, and only got really sweaty sometimes (when my hormones fluctuated during my monthly cycle/when I was nervous etc.). But it was annoying having to sit there and do nothing for 20 minutes once a week, and I didn't like the itchy prickly feeling of iontophoresis.

Then my dad started studying for a degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and he recommended making tea with this herb called astragalus root (huangqi ι»„θŠͺ). That sounded kinda troublesome too, especially since I was sceptical about whether it'd even help. But it turns out that you could get astragalus supplements in capsule form, so I ordered some just to try - although that wasn't the prescribed consumption method. I transitioned from weekly iontophoresis to nothing to daily astragalus supplements, and it took me a while to notice any difference.

Now it's been a year since I've started taking these capsules and I do think they are helping! I reckon the effect is about as good as iontophoresis. Not 100% but good enough. Honestly, I'm pretty surprised at the result. I'm not sure how it works but it works for me. I haven't had to use my iontophoresis machine at all in the last year so I'm not sure if combining that & astragalus supplements would achieve an even better result.

I searched the sub to see if anyone has posted anything about this herb but didn't find much at all. So if you're currently using an iontophoresis machine and/or want to try adding supplements that are not glyco/anticholinergic, you might want to give astragalus root supplements a go! I am currently getting mine from iHerb.

Have you ever heard of astragalus root as a treatment for hyperhidrosis? Have you personally tried it?

Anyone tried milk vetch (astragalus) or Forskolin?

I was reading this blog post:

https://selfhacked.com/blog/natural-antihistamines

Alongside quercetin, the article mentioned as the other most study-supported natural antihistamines:

ForskolinΒ is a compound extracted from a member of the mint family calledΒ Coleus forskohlii.

AstragalusΒ is a medicinal plant also known as milk vetch.

Quercetin gets mentioned a lot, but I've not heard of the other two: has anyone tried?

So Astragalus is fabulous!

So i had green sputum coming up, sore throat that was swollen and painful. Feeling crap. My yearly tonsilitis has arrived.

Typically, at least for the last 5 years i go straight on antibiotics, skipping the first line ones since they stopped working on me a few years ago but this time i tried Astragalus instead cause i was too busy to go to the doctors and i had some knocking about.

It's been day 3 and my sore throat is basically gone, the green sputum which usually i have for 1 week was only around for 1 day, now my sputum is clear. I have some throat tenderness remaining when i swallow but no other systemic symptoms. I'm able to continue working and doing what I have to do, mind clear. I haven't spread it to anyone either.

So i'm happy with this! it's 6 pills/day but i think i will continue on it to maintain my health. No side effects either.

I've searched on this subreddit and there isn't a lot on Astragalus so I wanted to put something on here for those who are looking for something to rev up their immune system. Hey! this works!

cheers

BPH Talk: Astragalus for Immunity and More in Traditional Chinese Medicine

During these difficult times of the global pandemic, men's health support groups may be relying more on online channels to stay connected to their members. They may also be responsibly and critically looking for reliable resources to share with each other. We encourage you to spread awareness of men's health issues such as BPH so that men can take this time of social distancing to focus more on their health.

For men who have been diagnosed by their doctor with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is a prostate enlargement condition common in older men and associated with nocturia (frequent urination at night) and poor urinary flow, they might be weighing their options in terms of how to manage and treat their BPH. Some men with mild BPH may consider traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Although it is necessary to consult with a physician, naturopath and herbal specialist whether certain herbs are safe for consumption based on your current physical condition and allergies, as well as your current diet and medications, some may deem that for mild BPH, trying a TCM approach could be their solution to managing symptoms in a natural, safer, plant based way.

One herb we are looking at today is astragalus. Its root is one of the ingredients listed in prostate health supplements that are designed to support men who experience BPH. You may see it listed as astragalus radix, astragalus membranaceus, huang qi or other species of astragalus. It is allegedly beneficial for supporting the immune system as well as prostate volume. However, those on the more skeptical side may want to see more studies proving these beneficial effects.

So far on clinicaltrials.gov which lists studies both ongoing and completed about various disease states, one study shows lower prostate volume, lower IPSS (international prostate symptom score), better quality of life, increased urinary flow rate, lower post voiding residual volume, and lower PSA (prostate specific antigen) levels for men with BPH using a supplement with astragalus as an ingredient compared to a placebo (studyΒ NCT02313233) and another shows a study in patients with diabetic ulcers who experienced better limb salvage, reduced necrosis levels, and faster healing through a TCM mixture that included astragalus compared to a placebo
