I just realized that I have been overcooking asparagus for the last 20 years. Now I wonder what other foods I might be missing out on because they weren't prepared right.
I never had asparagus growing up, because it was too expensive when cooking for my family of 9. Once I started cooking it for myself as an adult, I never really understood the big draw. I steamed it, roasted it, bbq'd it, and always ended up with something that was ok at best.
Tonight I was making chicken primavera (of sorts) and in cooked all the different veggies one at a time in order to avoid anything getting mushy. I stir-fried the asparagus in the rendered chicken fat and added it to the pasta without trying it first. When I had my first bite, I almost thought I ruined it, because the asparagus was still crunchy and I had no easy way to fish it all out. As I kept eating, I realized how much better the texture and flavour was. It wasn't raw, but was firm all the way through with a slight snap to every bite. I finally get why people love asparagus and why they pay so bloody much for it out of season.
Now I want to try every food I don't like and cook them in a million ways to make sure I'm not missing out on anything else!

AITA for digging out an asparagus plant I never wanted in my garden?
I think this post is going to be long winded so please bare with me because I’m completely conflicted right now. So basically last year, without my knowing, my parents who are also my neighbors/landlords planted asparagus in my vegetable garden. And I worked a lot last year during the pandemic so I had no clue about it until after I bought a shit ton of veggies to plant and was starting to garden and was told by my parents not to plant in half of my small vegetable garden because they had already planted their asparagus there. So of course I was pissed because I had bought a bunch of plants to plant there and couldn’t even fit everything. But I let them keep it there last year and let them know that next year (which is now this year) that I’m going to dig it up so I can plant what I want in MY garden. I told them this several times this year and last year.
Now that my side gig is done and I can finally have weekends to get things done, I decided yesterday to go out and get my garden ready to plant some stuff so I pull the asparagus plant out and make sure weeds are pulled. Which there weren’t any weeds because I guess my mom took it upon herself to do it while I’m at work all day on the weekday. Now I NEVER ask my parents to do anything in my yard and they generally never ask if I needed their help. They literally just take it upon themselves to do it while I’m not home. I mean I appreciate that they have done it, but in my opinion volunteering to do it without my knowledge does not warrant putting THEIR plants in MY garden. So after I dug it all up, last night my mom sent me angry texts saying that basically I don’t appreciate what they do for me and they aren’t going to do anything for me anymore because of this. I mean I’m kind of happy about that because they always say “you never do this you never do that” when in reality they never give me a chance to do it. I work 40+ hours a week and when I do get the chance to do the things they say I never do, well, they pretty much already have done it. I mean even last year, when I go out to water my plants after I come home from work, I see they already have done it because the soil would be wet.
Anyway, I don’t think I should be made to feel bad about digging up a plant that they planted taking up almost half of my veggie garden because I want to plant what I want in MY garden. I mean I pay rent, I live in the property. If I wasn’t their daughter and I was just some tenant living there then they wouldn’t be
