So, did anybody else see this one, in particular coming? I swear, it was almost slow motion for me, here's why, and would love to know the staff's tink-tink on it.

You are Tony, and your story of cancellation starts with never really being known for jokes - insults are a whole different ballgame. After years of this, you realize you are pretty much (and the world sees you as) a 1-trick pony. And a cheap trick at that. But you hit that trick every time, so people ooh and ahh, but it is the same trick.

So like Evel Knievel, the jump has to get bigger. Same trick though, just more intense.

You roll with it, because it pays, but don't develop any real talent or benefit society in any way, and what you thought was your schtick, but was really a reflection of your soul, becomes magnified. More. And more. Each time. Because you know you are a talentless turd pushed to the top of the bowl it leaves you empty. With nothing to fill it, you get more bitter at others, increasing your desire to lash out, which only makes you feel EVEN worse about yourself. A vicious, self-perpetuating cycle... Because you are rewarded for bearing your subconscious demons, and you can't fill your emptiness... So you only want to make others feel MORE empty than you.

(That, and I think having a gay man's voice [not that there's anything wrong with that] while hanging out with Mr. Alpha-clan increased his feelings of inferiority and caused feelings of symbolic social castration. He was probably made fun if for it, and it made him want to make fun of others.)

So...you get so deep, you develop a "show" whose guise it is to recognize "up and coming" comedians, but it's really just an excuse and opportunity for an already famous, rich comedian with a complex to belittle those who are truly "nobodies" to him. Those who are trying harder than he ever did, and probably funnier, but without the famous friends whose coattails they can ride... But even that is not enough...

You get introduced by an Asian cawlmedian that just went before you, who got laughs with "Stop Asian Hate" material. You think, "I know how to show 'em! I'll let my darkness out, and "pretend" that it is an act, playing the opposite of him, the guy people are SUPPOSED to hate! (Because I really am that guy! And here's how I can get a super-cheap laugh with it!) And you do your little act.

But, people see through it. Even your midget daddy, who nixes you from shining his shoes before the big meeting. He knew the moment w

New Sub Rule - No Armchair Diagnosing

Hi Everyone,

Within the last month, there's been an increase in both members and posts. We recently updated sub rules, but we are also adding a new one in response to recent posts, comments, and reports. If you have not already seen it, please read below. If you break this rule, your posts and comments may be removed. If we have to remove your posts or comments for repeatedly breaking these rules, it may result in getting banned from the sub.

No Armchair Diagnosing Cast Members

Please refrain from armchair diagnosing cast members. For example, we’ve seen lengthy essays on why some cast member is a sociopath and then the OP citing medical journals to back it up. Armchair diagnosing -- the act of a professional or nonprofessional diagnosing someone they've never treated-- is ableist, an engagement with misinformation, and problematic for many other reasons. None of us are health professionals privy to cast members’ health needs.

Alright Armchair GMs, what is your offseason to-do list?

Post how you'd like GM Tom Fitzgerald to tackle this offseason!

For me, I'd love to see moves that address our special teams dilemma. To start I'd like to free up as much cap space as possible. We have a lot of RFAs to sign this summer and we need to make as much space as possible to make moves.

Palmieri, Zajac, and Calmalleri Contracts come off the books this summer totaling 6.8m of free cap space. My first order of business is to use this money as part of our budget for resigning our RFAs to team friendly bridge deals.

In addition, my first trade would be to Seattle. I'd be willing to give up anywhere between a 3rd-5th rd pick for "Future Considerations" meaning I want them to select Andreas Johnsson.

It's not that he is bad player, he's shown to be an excellent piece in Toronto, he just hasn't worked out here. He's not a great shot blocker, penalty killer, and he hasn't produced this year. Most importantly he carries a 3.4m cap hit for 2 years which is bad for business. Clear him out and use this money for penalty killers.

Another player we need to dump is Will Butcher. My issue with Butcher is not his puck skills which I consider to be well above average, my issue is he's a terrible defender, to the point where I would rather have a forward like Sharangovich or Hischier back defending a 1 on 1 against a crosby/ovechkin. 3.7m for a 2nd unit PP specialist is too expensive, he needs to be gone as well, by any means possible short of a buy out.

Clearing out Johnsson and Butcher (7.1m total) means we now have 7.1 + 37.6m of projected cap space for a total of 44.7 million in cap space for next off season**.**

Now comes the fun part. First we need to use this money for our RFAs. Allot 10-15m to bring back

Merkley, Mcleod, Kuokkanen, Sharangovich, Bastian, Maltsev, and (regretfully) Siegenthaler. At around 1.5 for each, that's 10.5m, we'll call it 13m for good measure.

44.7 - 13 = 31.7m Remaining cap space

Next it's time to look to the Free agent market for Penalty Killers. We're not going after the big fish, we're going after role players and defenders to stabilize our special teams and GA.

First order of business is to resign Murray. I know a lot of you think Murray is overrated or whatever. I think that would make you stupid and oblivious to good defending. Not being noticeable is a GREAT thing for a defensive defenseman. If you thought our defense was bad this year, next year we'll be setting League records if we don't

Game dev armchair CEO: is it better to cultivate a small following or sellout to ensure longevity but scorn goodwill?

Imagine you are a dev and want to make your own game, you have your essentials all you need is money. After months of spreading word of mouth and kickstarting and planning out your game, you fall shy of your goal, you decide to push back the release in order to spread the word and fund it further.

One day, you see in your inbox an offer from [company] offering you a generous amount in order to not only meet your goal, but also any additional marks you have plus longevity. However, the contract states that the game and other continuations and spin offs must be permanently exclusive to their storefront.

You already promised to your backers, a modest amount of cult followers, that it would be available on other systems. Though most would understand why, a vocal minority will denounce you on social media and most won't really support any future endeavors you might have for fear of repeating events. However, not taking the deal means retaining goodwill, the game will ship but due to the lack of funds the company can't fund another entry and the game is remembered by a small cult.

My question is: would you take the deal or not?

Armchair Diagnoses - Let's Talk about It

Hi All,

As many of you saw yesterday, we are trying to implement a new rule in the sub regarding armchair diagnosing of the cast. We understand that many of you do not like this rule. Part of that may be us just struggling to explain it so I will try to do that here. Over the past couple of weeks, we have seen a huge increase in posts poking at the mental health of certain cast members. To be very clear, we are not talking about the posts that simply state things like, "so and so is a narcissist". These are not the posts or comments we take issue with. It's the comments where posters go into significant detail about various mental health issues. Here's the thing, we understand many of you may have personal experience with various mental health issues and while we understand you may mean well, these posts often contain misinformation about mental health issues (and from people who are not mental health professionals). These are the posts we are talking about. We've gotten so many reports about these types of comments and we are just trying to find a way to handle them the best we can.

We apologize this was not made clearer in the first post about the rule. We'd also love to have a civil and constructive discussion to hear your thoughts on how we might better word this rule in a way that is more clear and that we can all work with in this sub. Perhaps the rule should be more generally about misinformation, including armchair diagnoses, for example.

I also want to clarify yet again, this is not a Hannah and Paige fan club. I can tell you that I strongly dislike Hannah just as much as the rest of you. It just comes off this way sometimes because well, a majority of the posts are about her.

Finally, if you are unhappy in this sub, we encourage you to find a new sub to discuss this show. If you want to start a new sub that doesn't have rules, please feel free. This isn't a popularity contest for us and it's not an airport, there's no need to announce your departure. I started this sub last year because there wasn't a sub focused on just Summer House. The group is growing very rapidly and while I kind of thought we wouldn't have too many rules, I've been adapting based on those of you in the sub and am just trying to create a fun place to discuss the show while trying to avoid too much toxicity. We are glad you are all here with us and hope we can work together on this.

Why do people always like to be "armchair analysts"?

I completely recognize that this post is meta because of how I'm treating "people" as a whole.

The phenomenon I'm talking about comes up a lot in discussing business/marketing/strategy. For example, I'll be talking to a friend and they'll say "Man I can see why Video Game Sequel put Main Character on all the advertisement art. Since they're such a beloved character, they probably want people to associate the new game with them". And then later I'll overhear them talking to someone else, saying "Man I plunked down my $60 for Video Game Sequel, hell yeah I wanna see what happens next to Main Character!"

Situations like that strike me a lot. Where people (again, I know the irony) love to view a marketing or business choice from the abstracted viewpoint of the CEO or person who consciously made that choice. They love to wax on the risks, benefits, and overall analysis of that choice. They think about how that choice might be perceived by the millions of consumers in the mass market. And then (the point where it becomes kind of cosmically silly to me) they themselves fork over the cash and are the very consumer themselves that they just analyzed.

It shows up in so many things. Seeing a car commercial with a friend and hearing "Of course they're gonna put a hot girl with Product. They want people to associate that sexiness with their product". Then they themselves are the "people" buying the product.

"Elon Musk just stays in the news because he has a good PR team and wants people to associate him as a Tesla or Tony Stark to build his brand and image" said by someone who owns thousands in Tesla stock.

"Oh see, they wrap the amusement park line around like this so people think they're almost there, but it's still 45 minutes away" said by someone who proceeds to crane their neck and enjoy the attractions along the line, and will still wait the 45 minutes.

"Hehe I can't wait to see Opposite Political Party take that tough vote, people are gonna see how hypocritical they are and not vote for them" said by someone who votes for their party and overlooks even greater hypocrisy.

People love to feel like they're privy to the intents and forces of advertisement and business. When in reality, all of us are conditioned consumers in myriads of invisible ways, aren't we. In a way, those who do this are reducing other people to simple automatons whose inputs are very basic and easily manipulated, but they themselves are intelligent enough to see the strings pu

What would COD reveal to us armchair sleuths?

This case drives me crazy. The lack of information and at the same time a literal picture and audio of the guy who did it. The silence around the details made me that much more addicted to this case.

In lieu of new information, I made a list of things the cause of death could tell us. To clarify, I recognize there is no obligation to share anything. I have no understanding on what they should or shouldn’t release. We are just a group of nobodies who have found obsession with this case for whatever reason, and I know for a fact my opinion means nothing because I have no forensic or police training. We have no new information so we are forced to regurgitate the same bullshit

That being said, I have complied a list of things I think we could learn based on how the girls died. These are in no particular order, but a stream of thought (slightly tipsy on a Saturday night) post. Feel free to add or critique (but don’t hurt my feelings)

  1. Did he use weapons? Or; how prepared was he? This could give us clues to his level of murderous fantasy, which I think would help us determine his likelihood to kill again or the probability this isn’t his first or random opportunity/β€œhaving a bad day”
  2. As a second half, would have had to discard the weapons? How easy would that have been? Or is it likely he still owns weapons? (The gun used to threaten, but maybe not used to harm them?)
  3. How much blood would the murder have produced? Or maybe better said, what clean up would required? Could he have gone home and no one would have noticed? Or would it have required him to remove his clothes and clean himself?
  4. Were the girls murdered in different ways? Did he show extra aggression to one?
  5. Actual time of death. This may be answered, but I personally have not heard confirmed time of death. Did he have the girls for a short amount of time, which would seem more lucky, or did he hold them for while, more experience?
  6. How were the bodies found? Posed? Concealed? Seemingly left in the position they died in? Again a look at his psychology. Posing to me suggests he flaunts it, concealed means he tried to hide it and had time to do so, or left them meant he had no shame in his actions OR he was rushed/scared
  7. The likely amount of DNA on the girls. I like to think the murderer got close enough to be scratched and get some skin under their nails. Also, if LE knew that the girls likely scratched/caused damage to the man, that would be something for potential witness

Big 4 likely aren't going anywhere.

Kerfoot is likely going to Seattle.

Resign Galchenyuk, Hyman, Spezza.

Try to resign Nash.

Engvall, Mikheyev, Brooks under contract.

Foligno likely going back to CBJ.

Everyone else is gone upfront.

Try and resign Bogo.

If Sandin/Liljegren aren't getting a chance on D, it's time to make a trade and get value. One may get the chance to play right side next year.

Resign Freddy IF he'll take backup money. Otherwise resign Rittich. It's Campbell's net.

With the ~$8.5M saved from Freddy and Kerf, find a LW to complete one of the top two lines. Complete the line like Boston or Colorado have.

Strip Marner's A and maybe Matthews' too. Muzzin, Brodie, Hyman are more deserving. You could run:

FA LW - Matthews - Marner

Galchenyuk - Tavares - Nylander

Hyman - Engvall - Mikheyev

Brooks - Nash - Spezza

Rielly - Brodie

Muzzin - Holl

Dermott/Sandin - Bogosian

Can we all agree that having armchair web sleuths come on documentaries to give their β€œprofessional” opinions has got to stop.

I have never gotten so annoyed watching a documentary. I’m usually one to just enjoy the thrill of the crime solving process so even with don’t f with cats, I still rather liked the documentary because the web sleuths were in some manner actually involved in attempting to solve an ongoing crime of animal abuse.

THIS one boils my blood. Oh god. Who are these YouTubers and what ever makes them think they have the authority to be giving opinions on anything?

They have no understanding of bipolar disorder and how the behaviors Elisa was displaying are actually very indicative of a manic episode (I’m a clinical psychologist, I’m still young but I have worked in psych wards long enough to see people having manic episodes display psychotic hallucinations and delusions that can easily explain why one would strip naked before jumping into a water tank).

They don’t understand the basics of police work β€œShe could have been led to the rooftop by gunpoint, forced into the water tank... that sounds like foul play to me” umm what evidence at all do you have for jumping to that conclusion? I mean if we’re just open to speculating anything then sure yeah sure aliens could have mind controlled her to jump in, why stop at gunpoint if we’re just brainstorming scenarios here.

Why did we spend 90% of this documentary hearing from YouTubers and web sleuths instead of psychologists or psychiatrists, experts in forensics, investigators, witnesses of Elisa’s behavior such as her roommates at the hotel, her friends or family back home who could give some insight into her mental health experiences, her doctor, why don’t we hear more about the events of the days just before her death cause it seemed like we got 3 episodes talking about hotel ghost stories and 1 minute discussing her manic behaviors before her death.

What a waste of money and resources. Instead of focusing on the hotel, it should have focused on educating viewers about bipolar disorder and how Elisa’s experiences make sense in light of her mental health struggles.

Documentary makers everywhere, Netflix, whoever is about to make the next crime documentary, can we please please stop having people with no expertise and no personal involvement or relevance to the case interviewed for giving their opinions in documentaries. I think we can all agree on that.

Armchair Analyst - More evidence that Stam isn't it.

https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/midweek-analyst-fc-cincy-s-reboot-miami-s-pace-young-player-of-the-week

>You could even argue that things have gotten worse. FC Cincinnati have taken just one of the last 24 points on offer across the end of last year and the start of this one, and have won once in their past 15 games. That 15-game stretch represents 60 percent of Jaap Stam’s tenure as manager. This does not seem tenable.

I get it. The coaching turnover has been awful. But so have the coaches. Stam needs to show his 'system' can work sooner than later- perhaps another 6-8 games. Im not very hopeful. It hasn't worked consistently yet in his entire coaching career including Europe.

FCC fans mocked Nashville SC for hiring an 'average' former MLS coach. Thats the kind of coach FCC should've signed after the Koch experiment. Someone who can at least be average and get some stability going.

Armchair Admirals: Build a Better Star Destroyer

The challenge for every armchair admiral here is fairly straightforward: design a better Star Destroyer.

We all roughly know what the technology is. The Empire has limitless resources but limitless needs. If Palpatine tasked you with designing the mainstay of the Imperial fleet, what would you bring to him. Design whatever you want but explain what makes your decisions the best. The WHY is honestly more engaging for a group like this.

A few considerations:

  • Thrawn famously argued for more and smaller ships. If you want to go cheap (relative to an ISD) go right ahead but be sure to mention that you’re being cost-sensitive so people don’t think you’re just lacking ambition. Likewise, if you want something based around group tactics I want to hear about it.

  • Canon ISDs were intended to be iconic and intimidating so if visuals are your priority, knock yourself out.

  • There are a billion little stats (hyperdrive rating, supply storage, atmospheric speed, etc). If you want to get lost in the nitty gritty I’m sure there are folks here who will follow you down the rabbit hole. But if you’re not a data head that way and want to say it should be generally β€˜faster’ or β€˜have more fighters’ be as vague as you want. Some people like vague ideas, some people want to know exactly how many double ion cannon turrets are on the starboard arc. To each their own.

  • if you want to get philosophical about what the proper mission of an ISD is, feel free to incorporate that into a design write up.

I look forward to reading and discussing your designs!

Edit: 24 hours later and with over 100 comments, I’m surprised by the amount of love for regular Star Destroyers! Lots of amazing ideas for improving or adapting them but many people wanting to stick with the design we have. Also, tons of love for Gravity Wells. I did a quick snoop and the gravity well and interdiction concepts first showed up in the 1989 Star Wars Roleplaying Game manuals and then shot to fame with Timothy Zahn and the old school Thrawn trilogy, starting in 1991. Shout out to the Thrawn books. I liked Star Wars until I read those and then I absolutely loved Star Wars. I loved the discussion here so I’m going to come up with another design related conversation starter

Armchair GM / Trade Rumours Thread! (April 8 - 14)

Here is a place for all of your wacky Armchair GM ideas! Lay it out there, think HFBoards meets reddit.

Questions about potential future signings, trade proposals, and what Eklund is saying this week is all fair game. Who knows, maybe Kyle Dubas reads reddit ;)

Most of all, as always, have fun and be nice to each other!

Look for this thread every Thursday morning.

Last week's thread.
