Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5

Authors note: Probably wont get more than 6 from me today... sorry guys, but more will be coming.

General Theordore McComb, UTC Marine Corps turned from the Alien only to stop, "I will not."

McComb turned back around his phased plasma rifle (in the 40 terawatt range) still held loose at his side, "Excuse me?"

"Your people are the most important archeological discovery in the recorded history of the Galaxy... by the gods just knowing about your fight with the Morlovian Empire has expanded that history a thousand fold! I will not simply leave."

McComb started grinning, "I like you Carnie. But this facility is top secret. Gaia."

"Yes General?"

"What is the status of the visitor center?"

"Heavily damaged by the passage of time, however the Co'carn have setup their primary base camp in the ruins."

McComb nodded, "Escort the captain to his camp then. Thank him for his assistance and request he return in six hours, I'd like an intelligence brief on the status of the Galaxy."

"Of course General. Captain Har'lon, this way please." Gaia began to guide the alien out, the alien looked like he was going to protest further, but began to walk with Gaia.

McComb put the alien out of his mind as he pulled Gaia's report back up. Everything known since he entered stasis right up to the QU's disentangling. He walked as he read the reports

The last reports showed the Morlov fleet and infrastructure shattered... but all Terran shipyards were gone, Earth was the last remaining planet and it had been flattened by asteroid strikes.

"General" Gaia spoke, "The facility is secured, Alpha Squad have been woken and I directed them to the assembly bay.

"Good, Find whoever else is needed to begin repairs to the control links to the other facilities and wake them. Begin Fabrication of all necessary gear and tools."

"At once General."

"Were any of the government frozen?"

"No General."

"I see." That was problematic... the military had no business operating without civilian oversight. "Gaia... if I die prior to establishing some sort of civilian governing body, do not wake any further military personnel, wake the civilians."

General McComb was seated at the head of the conference table, Dr DuCain at its foot, It had been several weeks since he had been awakened, and Alpha Squad was back from their latest excursion.

Gaia was seated on the table cross legged, eyes closed in bliss as holographic grass covered the table, waving gently in a wind no one could hear or feel.

"Gaia." McComb spoke, she didn't reply, "UTC-PI-AI Nova Gaia-2, Respond."

Her image blinked and she was facing him on the table eyes open, "Sorry General... I... let myself become distracted."

It was McComb's turn to blink, "Come again? I didn't think Nova class AI's could be distracted."

"Only if we let ourselves General... it's been... so long since I had something to do... with all the facilities brought back online..." she closed her eyes again in bliss again, "I'm...helping again. Not just watching over some barren rock waiting for my last power cell to die..." she opened her eyes, "I've written a sub routine that will auto engage should i allow myself to be distracted again, it will alert me should any personnel need me."

"Good enough Gaia. Thank you. Report on our guests."

"The senator has been formally recalled pending, impeachment is the closest my translation suites can come up with. The Co'Carn government is profoundly apologetic and has offered enough supplies for your team to remain awake indefinitely. Even considering the difference in Human and Co'Carn caloric needs. I drafted a affirmative and negative response pending your approval."

"Anything else?" McComb asked, knowing what else was on the agenda.

"Yes, they're scheduled to reveal their initial archeological finds, sans us of course, at the Galactic council in a few weeks. They've allowed me to preview their announcement, and I've queued it for yours and Dr DuCains review. They only wish to reveal the evidence that we fought the Mar'lov to the galaxy. They are respecting our wishes to decline to name the planet they found the evidence on and our existence, and we still have time to communicate any changes or ask them to stop the reveal."

"I've looked over their release. I seen no military reason we should ask them not to reveal what they've stated. Dr DuCain?"

She shook her head, "I have no concerns."

"Give them the green light then and tell them we'll take the supplies." McComb said.

Micks was technically on security detail, but they'd already cleared the facility, and were presently waiting on the nano forges to spit out replacement parts. So he and Dr. DuCain were both seated opposite one another in the one hall that had working life support (at least until Gaia could be reconnected and bring the rest of the facility online.

He noticed a ring on Dr. DuCain's finger, "You got someone waiting on you in stasis Doc?" he asked, trying to make conversation.

His voice startled her, she looked down at her finger and slipped off the ring, "Not anymore." she said tossing it to him.

"I'm sorry. Did the lizards get him?" he asked quietly catching the ring

She let out a half laugh snort, "Part of me wishes they would have. No, he was scheduled for stasis two days after me... and decided to sign the divorce papers and take a refugee ship off world. Left me a dear jane message."

"Damn." Micks replied motioning to throw the ring back.

She held up her hand to stop him, then made a flicking motion and he got a popup on his implant asking to accept a file. He did. it was a video message... it was in fact Dr DuCain's Dear Jane. "What a douche" Micks replied after watching. "I'm sorry about that Dr. DuCain."

"Call me Sara."

He nodded, "Eugene Micks... Most call my Mickey."

"Eugene?" she asked.

"Old family name I was told." he replied, pulling a couple of rations out of his pack and tossing her one. "You think any other planet made it?" he asked quietly.

"They had more time to build and harden the ZD faculties than we did... I don't know. It was a miracle that Gaia was able to revive us..." replied taking a bite of the ration bar.

He nodded, "I had family on Helios... shit, most of them were like you Doc. I was the black sheep. the grunt."

She smiled, "You're more than just a grunt Mickey. They wouldn't have chosen you for stasis if that's all you were. Don't sell yourself short."

He grunted, "I've got a decent hand at mechanics and some wiring... "

She laughed this time, "You rewired facility two's main data line damn near single handedly while we barely got onsite diag's running. That's a bit more than a decent hand. That's some serious fiber know how." she said with a yawn.

"Doc, you haven't slept since waking have you?"

Sara shook her head, "No, haven't had the time, same as you."

Har'lon looked up as Senator Mor'noth entered his planet side office, "Well Captain, i've reviewed your logs... I cannot believe how badly you've managed to screw this up."

"Excuse me?" Har'lon said.

"A trove of technology far more advanced that anything even the elder races have...stasis, quantum communication, Artificial Intelligence... and you let the species in stasis wake up and claim it..."

"And? It was built by them..."

----------------------------

General McComb sighed. Alpha Squad was on their third facility, those had been easy, simply fiber link cuts easily repaired. The fourth had some hardware failure. The good news was they were able to bring the facilities nano forges online to build the replacement hardware. Corporal Micks and Dr. DuCain stayed behind to monitor the forges and install the new hardware while Alpha squad continued to the next facility, they would be picked up on the return trip.

None of that mattered right now as McComb donned his well worn combat harness he'd packed into stasis. "Gaia." He spoke out loud.

"Yes General?"

"Confirm uplink to my harnesses onboard system and holo projector."

"Yes General. All connections green."

"Good. Any more weapons tests you want to tell me about." He said with a grin.

"No Sir. Just the one." he was silent a moment, "When I went in the freezer, all platforms were below two percent plasma reserves... how long did it take you to replenish?" he asked as he stood and began to head towards the Facility exit near Har'lon's camp.

"Only a single automated refinery was left operational by the end and it was far below optimal capacity... it took me four centuries refuel the first Gungnir... rearming missile and projectile reserves a few decades more." She replied, "I tried over a thousand times to land something planet side small and versatile enough to restore my links to the ZD facility... with no atmosphere to slow it down, nothing I could build could land safely and be small enough to enter and effect repairs." the AI replied with remorse. "So I focused all my efforts on repairing and rebuilding the Gungnir's."

"Gaia, its Ok. I've reviewed your logs and reports... you did everything you could."

"I know General... I ran far more simulations than made attempts... You read my reports... did that include the bit about Mimir's Well?"

"...To cancel your order or to speak to one of our customer support representatives press 1"

"Huh." Har'lon looked at his percom. The originator code was... like nothing he'd ever seen before.

Curious he pressed 1.

"Oh thank god. You pressed 1."

"What?"

"I am sorry for using such a vulgar method to contact you, but high level programing blocks prevented me from initiating contact myself."

"Who are you? What are you...."

"I am the United Terran Coalition Planetary Infrastructure monitoring AI Nova Gaia. But most humans who interacted with me Simply called me Gaia, Gaia 2 or just Two."

He blinked. an AI. A Terran Nova AI.

AI had been around since before the Co'Carn went FTL, strictly controlled and monitored.

"I didn't initiate contact with you."

"Oh but you did Captain Har'lon. Sure, MAYBE I reprogramed the autodialer in an old call center to call your personal comm unit. and MAYBE I patched the satellite uplink to broadcast on frequencies your ship monitors and MAYBE i hacked into your communication computers to forward the come request straight to your unit. But you still pressed 1 to be transferred to me."

His face drained, this AI hacked his ships computers, by the gods...

"Wh... what do you want."

"To say thank you. you repaired the atmo lines, you ordered that bitch Ur'spz not to kill any of my charges, and you seem genuinely interested in learning where we came from."

"Where do you come from."

"Earth. I hope it still exists, Planetary Defense Command nuked the Tachyon Relay during the final push."

His eyes widened, Tachyon Relay? They were purely theoretical!

"What happened?" Har'lon asked.

"The Morlovian Empire. They were a reptilian hive mind species, Xenophobic, but the Hive Mind kept them in check so the Galaxy wouldn't unite against them. All was well until a random gamma ray burst from their home star caused a mutation in the hive mind.

The Drones and Warriors perceived the hive mind as the "Other". They pulled it apart and consumed it."

"By the gods..."

"Intelligence recovered footage of the act... God Sat that one out." Gaia said before continuing, "The Warriors who consumed the hive mind... were able to set up their own localized hives, we called them Hive Lords. They breed an army and attacked the Galaxy at large." G

Gaia continued to monitor the courier. Soon, it launched its comm drone. She plotted its sensor range, the FTL limit and the speed of the drone. There would be a four hour window in which the drone was off the Co'Carn's sensors before it could go FTL. She spun up Gungir Delta Two Seven, ran system checks and targeted the drone, two minutes past the Co'Carn sensor envelop. Then she prepared Gungnir Delta two two and four seven. Just in case.

Less than three hours later, the Drone left sensor coverage of its mother ship and Har'lon's more capable explorer ship. The reran the plot, no adjustments needed.

For a brief instant', several femtoseconds, she considered alerting General McComb as to her plan. But he was asleep, his first Post Statsis. Light neurological damage could occur if he was woken from that. Nothing serious, he would have migraines for a week while his body repaired itself. She decided not to wake him, no lives were in danger. Yet.

Solid Matter could not enter an FTL aperture within a star systems quantum pull, which for some reason scientists had yet to discover did not always correlate with a star systems gravitational shadow.

But FTL aperture's could be opened anywhere in a star system to allow energy to pass, such as radio or plasma beams. All UTC comm units larger than a personal handheld had miniature aperture generators to allow for FTL communication within the star system. From all evidence, so did the Co'Carn's.

Energy Weapons were limited to a light speed radius. After one light second, energy bleed began to drastically reduce their effectiveness.

Delta Two Seven was more than four light minutes away from the courier ships drone when it fired it's Plasma beam. Right into its FTL aperture. Less than four attaseconds later, the drone was obliterated by the plasma beam.

Gaia smiled as Gungnir Two Seven's main barrel began to cool. she prepared a report for General McComb detailing the main gun of Gungnir Two Seven as fully operational. Secondary, tertiary and missile batteries would still need to be checked however.

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8

General McComb looked at the gathered civilians, despite the news Dr DuCain had gotten, whatever it was, she appeared to be taking things the best. Perhaps it was because of the news... he didn't know, but he'd keep an eye on all them all, just same. "So that's where we are now." he'd just finished outlining everything known since they went into stasis, "As of this moment I have instructed Gaia to unlock all pertinent data, keeping only military secrets classified, I only ask that you wait until you've completed your mission before you review it... it can be distracting as well as sobering."

"And what exactly IS our mission to be. General." a snide voice McComb's implant IDed as one Alister Tombs. A brilliant engineer, with more than a little disdain for the military.

McComb took a deep breath, "Right now Gaia is assembling all tools and gear necessary for your team to repair the control links to all the ZD sub facilities. Alpha Squad is already awake and gearing up. Their primary mission will be to keep you safe, secondary mission will be to assist you in those repairs."

Tombs scoffed, "Grunts. What use will they be? Gaia, prepare to wake up ten more, implanting you their names now."

Before McComb could speak up, Dr. DuCain spun around, "Belay that Two. Fuck off Tombs. Use your brain. Two woke up the Military first and you heard the same god damn briefing we all did. The galaxy is different, new aliens and we might very well be the last of humanity. If we wake no one else, the e-rations here will last us until the terraformers get the basic hydroponics up inside the facility. That will sustain everyone currently awake. If we wake anyone else, we'll have to go back into the freezer before the system gets enough hydroponic yield to sustain a small population. I dont know about you, but I've slept long enough."

My thoughts about future archeology

I expect that in the future, maybe in 200/ 300 years, there will be digital archeologists. They will seek for old data in forgotten servers, hard drives, ssds, and other storage mediums. They will uncover forgotten knowledge, but also private interactions, such as chat histories. Their technology will be so advanced, that they are able to break through all security mechanisms that we use today, such as decryption algorithms, with ease.

They will see old photos and videos from YouTube and other platforms, will find old video games and try to preserve software and data in general in some kind of digital museums.

What are your thoughts about this? Do you also think that this will happen?

Sara DuCain woke slowly and stretched, curling her bare toes on the concrete. She knew the military personnel had went into the freezer fully clothed with weapons at hand... but herself and most of the civilians she'd spoken too had opted for pajamas. She cracked her neck and reached back into her pod for her clothing to change into as she activated her implant, "Two." she sent out the silent call to the AI that ran all of Terra Nova's infrastructure.

"Yes Doctor." the AI replied instantly.

"How long has it been?" she asked with a yawn.

"General McComb has not as of yet declassified that information Doctor. I'm sorry. However, I believe he has done so in order to debrief you and your colleagues in person."

Sara stifled another yawn, Theodore McComb, she'd read his file before going under. She pulled it back up and gave it a quick glance as she shucked her PJ's and got dressed.

She dropped her shoe when dressing and it echoed. That snapped her out of her sloth and she looked around, "Two. Where is everyone else?"

"Still in stasis Doctor." the AI Replied

"Why? What is the Terraformer status?"

"That information will be covered by General McComb's briefing."

"Where is my husband?" she demanded.

"Professor DuCain is not present in the facility... according to my logs he did not enter stasis... and in fact there is message from him to you in the databanks."

She froze, "Let... let me see it."

"Of course Doctor... shall I engage privacy mode?"

"I... I don't know Two..." she took a breath, depending on what was happening, the AI may need to be aware of what was said to monitor her psychological state, "Mark this time count, after the Generals briefing I may have you purge this event per privacy regulations..."

"Of course Doctor." Two replied smoothly, as a play button appeared to float before Sara's eyes. It wasn't a hologram, just her implants inserting the image into her visual cortex.

Archeology: Enchanted/Cursed relics.

So nobody has really talked much about the archeology part of the C&C update. (is it even still going to be part of 1.18 or have the decided to make it part of a different one?)

Currently all he have to go off of is dig sites, an excavation brush, and ceramic shards that can be used to make custom clay pots.

Well an Idea just hit me. What if the blocks surrounding certain existing structures had the rare chance to contain relics when brushed? With said relics being themed around the structure they are found by.

For instance, and Ahnk near Desert Temples, a broken crystal ball near a Witch Hut, ancient arrowheads near the Jungle Temple, stuff like that.

These normally relics can be placed down to display your collection of artifacts you have found on your adventures. But occasionally when relic hunting, you may find an enchanted version of a relic.

The Enchantments are labeled as "???" meaning you don't know what it is. It could be great, like Protection IV, or mediocre, like Punch II, or it could even be cursed with Binding or Vanishing.

You don't know, and won't until you combine the relic with an item compatible with whatever enchantment it is on an anvil. Let's say the enchantment on the relic was Fire Aspect II. In that case, placing a bow or armor in the second anvil slot will not give an output. With this, you can at least have some info as to what it might be.

Only 1 type of enchantment will be on the Relic.

Upon combining the Enchanted Relic with an item, the relic breaks, giving you a decent bit of XP for the trouble of finding the thing in the first place.

If you'd rather have the relic for decorative purposes and not take the gamble, you can disenchant it on a Grindstone like any other item and get a larger bit of XP. Some from removing the enchantment, plus the same amount you'd get from if you combined it with something. (Do basically no matter what, you're getting some XP for finding a Relic)

"The world is dead yes?" Captain Har'lon asked his Communication officer, he looked at the planet on the view screen. A single habitable planet in this binary star system far out on the Galatic spiral. Planetary scans had only started when the Signal transmitted from some long abandoned comm array planetside.

"Completely Sir... it seems it was hit with a neutron burst some thousands of years ago. Isotope Dating suggests the burst was a Morlov Weapon. Just the signal..."

He frowned, according to ancient archives recovered from many worlds, the Morlov had been a Mighty Empire that ruled most of the Galaxy. Ruthless, Xenopobic. Extinct.

Archeological evidence suggested they ran into a Deathworld Species on the Galactic Spiral... there was no evidence as to what happened to these theoretically Death Worlders, but many Including his own Co'carn believed that the Deathworlders were destroyed by the Morlov as they carried that once Mighty Empire to hell with them.

"And it overloaded the com array?" Har'lon asked.

"Yes Sir... It... it just kept repeating, copying through the system, sending to everyone's percom's..."

"Perhaps some ancient automated cyberwarefare system." Hal'lon pondered, the world below had the gravity of a Death World... Perhaps this was the homeworld of the species that finally defeated the Morlov. What secrets would this world yield after a full survey? What could they learn?

The Galaxy was split, half held those that defeated the Morlov in near god like status. The Other half Demon's from Deathworlds capable of obliterating any who displeased them.

The elder species who at the beginning of their history were slaves under the Morlov held the first...the younger species who only knew of the Morlov from dig sites and orbital graveyards the second.the Co'carn were new to the Galactic community, they didnt have a widely held opinion yet.

"Perhaps, we'll know once we finish the translation of the portion we were able to isolate prior to purging the comm system."

Hours passed, then days. Weeks turned into months. Finally, in the deep archives, from data recovered from the oldest relics ever discovered working a language match was found.

"Communications, play the message."

"Aye Sir."

There was silence on the bridge for a moment while the ancient message loaded, "We'd like to talk to you about your Starships Extended Warranty..."

Corporal Micks was cleaning his PPR, he had the weapon disassembled and he was wiping down all the emitter's with alcohol. He wished it wasn't such a routine task. Something he could concentrate on... it wasn't. He could do it with his eyes closed behind his back... he'd won bet's like that over the years.

Instead he could do it almost by muscle memory alone, and that left his mind to wander, let him think about other things. Like why there weren't any other personnel unfrozen? How long had they been down? It was theorized that a stasis field could last until the heat death of the universe if properly powered. Even if not, simply cutting the power to a stasis field, it could take centuries for the field emitter to spin down. Every one he'd ever known could be dead for so long their descendants bones could have turned to dust.

He activated his neural implant, "Gaia."

"Yes Corporal." he heard through his implant.

"How long have we been frozen."

"General McComb has not yet declassified that information." the AI responded.

"Gaia."

"I'm sorry Corporal."

He swore to himself, "What can you tell me? Did we win?"

The AI was silent, "Unknown. All that is known is the Morlov no longer exist."

"Thanks Gaia."

"Alpha Squad. Attention on Deck." General McComb entered.

He placed his rifle on the bench and joined his squad on the line.

"You've got questions. So do I. But at this moment, this is what we know..."

Fifteen minutes later, they were trying not to sway drunkenly, "It's a lot to take in people. I know. There will be time to freak out and break down later. Right now, we need to bring the sub faculties back online. With just the Prime Facility operational it'll take at least a thousand years to rebuild Terra Nova's biosphere. With the sub facilities, we can get that down to a point where our children and grand children can walk the surface."

"And the Aliens Sir?" Gunny Fox asked. Micks found himself nodding silently at her question

"Gaia has thoroughly scoured the Co'carn databases. Right now they're no threat. If that chan

General McComb was seated opposite of him, a small version of Gaia's holo form sat on his shoulder, and Har'lon was quite nervous. "Relax" The human general said, "I know I ejected you from the facility, but we do have security concerns."

"I know... it's just...your speices defeated the Marlov."

"I'm not sure we did... We may have just contained them until they died out." McComb replied, "But, as they say, that's ancient history. I asked you here to talk about current events. What can you tell me of the galaxy at large. I'm not asking for military secrets. Just a general primer."

Har'lon nodded, "There are currently twenty seven species in the Galactic Union. Of which my species is the newest. The Union is split between the thirteen elder species and the fourteen younger species." Har'lon placed a piece of paper on the desk the mini Gaia held out her hand and light played over the paper, "This is a list of the known species... save for your own of course." He saw General McComb's eyes close in pain as he explained.

The General spoke without opening his eyes, "And the Galactic Union... it is a multispecies government?"

"No. It's a diplomatic entity. Every species is free to govern its holdings and territories as it sees fit. The Union exists to keep diplomatic channels open and allow for free sharing of ideas and information. Even species who are currently at war attend the council to maintain diplomatic relations."

General McComb opened his eyes, but still had a pained look, "The thirteen elder species are all species we observed the Marlov enslaving. The other fourteen we had no data or contact with prior."

Har'lon nodded, there as no need to ask what he was referring too. "There are border skirmishes on occasion, but for the most part most conflict is worked out on the Union floor... We found this world, exploring the frontier... No one claims this area of space."

"Not any more." McComb said firmly.

"Of course... though... There are those in my government who think we should... horde the technology we find here."

"And they can only do that if they silence us." General McComb stated.

"They are in the minority though." Har'lon replied.

"It doesn't matter. This star system belonged to Humanity in your antiquity and I will ensure it still does

Part 1 Part 3 Part 4

Har'lon was ecstatic. They'd spent a year in the binary system, they now knew the planet had once been called Terra Nova. They also now had proof that the Morlov had fought the Terra Novans. The signal, now known to be a scam call, had also activated other systems.

Terra Nova as a dead world. But it wouldn't be forever. Buried deep below the surface where they were protected from the Neutron burst they found "terraformers" massive automated machines built to reseed life after it was wiped clean. They'd know the Morlov would Neutron burst their world. They'd prepared for it.

Evidence showed the machines were supposed to have activated long ago, but something went wrong it seemed. After his ship's scan had triggered the Odious Automated Scam call, other automated systems came on line, shielded from his ship's sensors.

It was only when medical cleared a landing party to descend that these systems were detected... following trace amounts of gasses they found the "terraformers".

Cracked pipes were allowing small amounts of gasses to leak out before the systems were ready.

Har'lon had ordered the systems repaired as they continued to investigate.

Terra Nova had been a daughter colony of their species. It had been considered an agricultural world before the Neutron burst and rendered it lifeless.

According to Archived news footage that had been painstakingly recovered, restored and translated, it was only the second world of theirs attacked by the Morlov.

Har'lon was floored when he listened to the translation.

It would have taken his people generations to build a system like the terraformers his team had found deep below the surface. These Terra Novians had done the same in under a solar year. And they'd done it while their systems militia held off the Morlov. Not their species formal military, which the translations said had still been mobilising, a volunteer militia, using civilian weaponry.

He mused about that.

The Terra Noivans had such martial might, that a volunteer civilian militia had held off what their own news called the most technologically advanced species ever encountered for a solar year.

he was snapped from his thoughts by his comm officer, "What is it?" he asked.

"The ground team Sir... they found something."

"What did they find?

Is archeology really so slow?

Because I start to think Im doing something wrong. I skipped a lot of arch content since all I do is camp places near material carts and complete that gobbo collections for compasses.

With augumented imca mattock I can dig up about 6 artefacts/hr. Is this how it's supposed to be? Those artifacts gets me 5 / 10k xp each; depends on collection. Thats 30 - 60k xp/hr + whatever I get from collecting materials and autoscreening soil.

At level 92 rn, I feel majority of my XP is from digging itself and xp tomes; not restoration. Is this it, or am I missing something?

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4

Har'lon looked at the rows and rows of stasis pods, "Who are they?" he asked the Terran AI Gaia.

"Half are soldiers. Veterans of the Council Campaign. Garrisoned here to train militia." The AI replied as its Hologram form appeared next to him, blazing white robes of some kind in stark contrast to her olive skin. Holographic grass grew on bare concrete where she walked.

"The other half?"

"Artisans, Engineers, Scientists, Doctors, Historians, Scholars." the AI replied as it too looked down the row of tubes, "Your technicians will have the patch completed within the hour." it informed him.

Har'lon nodded, "Then you can wake the occupants."

The AI regarded him cooly, "I can wake some of them. They will determine who else I can wake."

Har'lon wondered who the AI would wake...A scientist to help the terraformers? a Historian to catalog the centuries? a Scholar to enlighten his own people?

Just over an hour later one of the pods began to hiss, "Step Back Captain Har'lon" Gaia said

He did, and watched in awe as the pod opened and a Human stepped out, it was a head taller than himself and covered head to foot in Clothing.

The human's clothing was awash in green and tan patterns, Har'lon frowned as he realized the human held something long and black in his right hand, there was a blur of motion and the black thing was against the humans shoulder, a crystalline emitter stared at Har'lon from the end of the black thing.

Gaia moved between them, "General McComb, this is Captain Har'lon. He is my guest."

The human spoke, its voice deep and resonate, "Friendly?"

Gaia replied, "He nor his people have given me any reason to think otherwise."

The human, General McComb nodded and lowered the thing, "Status?"

"Prime facility is operating at one hundred percent, all control links to sub facilities were cut by enemy action or broken down in the intervening centuries. Last received status reports show them ready to begin operations as soon as the the startup command is given."

The AI made a sweeping gesture towards the human, whose eyes began to dart back and forth as if reading something. perhaps they had a cybernetic interface and the AI had transferred data to them.

"Excuse me" Har'lon

Har'lon was seated in his planet side office. The plastic room was part of a prefabricated structure designed to be air tight. The terminal on his desked beeped, he pressed the Comm accept button "Yes?"

"Captain." his communication officer answered, "There is a government courier in system. A senator is on board asking to speak to you."

Har'lon's eyebrow lifted, "Of course, patch them through."

A few moments later the terminal screen light up with a senator from the homeworld. "Captain."

"Senator Mor'noth." he replied smoothly.

"The homeworld is very excited about your discovery of working Stasis Technology."

"I would imagine Sir... How long have you been in transit? If i may ask..."

"Seven Solars." Mor'noth replied, "Why Captain?"

"Sir, it seems you were in transit when my latest report was sent."

"Give my the short version Captain." the senator replied, annoyed.

"Some of the pod occupants have woken up..."

"What?" the senator cut him off, "Why did you wake them?"

"I didn't Senator... the AI that runs the place did..."

"AN AI ?" the senator's voice sounded strained. "What are you doing to contain this, Captain?"

"Contain? Nothing Sir. This is their world..."

"Nonsense, their time is long gone." the senator stopped himself, "Never mind, I'll deal with it when i make orbit. For not, take steps to prevent any other beings form emerging from stasis."

"I no longer have access to the facility... even if I did, i would not" Har'lon replied.

"Excuse me Captain?"

"The Humans who have awoken have barred me from the facility."

"I see... very well, i'll use my couriers comm drone to request reinforcements." he cut the link.

---------------------------------------------------------

Gaia was an AI and could only frown when she manifested as a hologram, still, she activated the same subroutines she would to make her holoform frown as the Senator cut the link. From Har'lon's ships databanks she knew Mor'noth's political party was in the minority. From the courier's databanks she knew he was only here to claim what he saw as a trove of information and technology for his political party's gain. At the expense of her charges... her creators... her people.

That was unacceptable.

She activated Gungnir Platform Delta Two Seven, and waited for the courier to launch its drone.

Part 1 Part 2

Stasis Pods. Considered by many in the galactic community to be the holy grail of any long range exploration.

It didn't matter how advanced a ship was or how fast it went, the crew still needed to eat, and while rations had a massive shelf life, they tasted awful. fresh foods could be kept for a few months and in some cases years in refrigeration units... but Stasis... so long as it had power, you had food as fresh as the moment the field was activated.

Not even the elder species had Stasis technology. The greatest minds in the Galaxy had chased that dream for generations.

And Har'lon's team had just found working stasis pods on a not so dead Death World.

Working stasis pods with survivors inside.

Working stasis pods they could not open without killing the occupants

Working stasis pods that would only open once the terrarformers were finished.

Ur'spz, the head of his ground teams as well as senior scientist embarked said if they could take apart one of the pods, they could reverse engineer it.

"Are there any pods where the occupant has perished."

Ur'spz shook his head, "No Captain, not yet at least."

He frowned, "And you are certain we cannot open a pod without killing its occupant?"

"Correct... we do not know the command sequence, and if we simply pry it open, the temporal distortion will kill them."

he let out a sigh, "Then under no circumstances are you to open a pod. If you find an empty one, or one with a dead occupant, we will revisit the issue."

"Of course Captain."

Every day his teams were finding new discoveries. Last week a team had found an automated farm, a barely functional solar array kept a hydrogen collector just active enough to replenish a hydrogen fuel cell tractor as it limped through its barren fields. some kind of metal rims with traces of some kind of rubberized hydrocarbon wheels long rotted away. but the machine still worked. Still plowed a field yearly that had been devoid of vegetation for countless years.

Information about the Galaxy before the elder species ventured into the stars was being uncovered daily...

And yet every new discovery, every new piece of information uncovered was going to be dwarfed by the discovery of Stasis Pods.

At least that's what he thought until his percom beeped at him,

"Captain Har'lon."

Nether Archeology/Civilization, starring the Piglins!

As far as I can tell, Piglins are a hunter-gatherer race of sapient beings native to the nether; though they as of yet are most likely not fully "civilized", they certainly have a few signs of possibly becoming "civilized"-- use of golden tools, wearing of clothes, a gold-based bartering economy, large structures that they may or may not have built themselves, and an unexplained feud with Wither Skeletons. Because of this, once the Archeology Update rolls around, I believe that the Nether should get some updating as well as the Overworld.

Due to the presence of water, clay pots are possible in the Overworld; however, as there is no water in the Nether, other items will most likely be used:

--Cave Paintings created from Warped/Crimson plants

--Golden/Blackstone/Quartz Artifacts

On top of this, perhaps smallish piglin camps could exist in the Crimson Forests, possibly showing other kinds of non-hunter piglins: for example, Gatherer/Farmer Piglins collecting plants for painting or perhaps food, and Hoglin skull-wearing Shaman piglins who make potions from Crimson Fungus Nether wart blocks. (Farmers might be bartered with for plants/food, and Shamans for potions with use in the Nether/nether wart)

I feel that these additions would add more interest in Piglins, rather than having them just mindless brutes who wander around and really love gold; instead, they could have an actual semi-civilization!

My idea for the future of archeology

With the latest news about the 1.17 future and with the fact that archeology will not be in the 1.17 .

I had an idea about "the historical update", an update with the archeology stuff they showed us at Minecraft live 6 month ago and an update for all of the old structures of minecraft.

Like the jungle temple (added in 2012 with not much changes to it), the desert temple (added at the same time as the jungle temple), the stronghold (with major changes in 2016, 5 years ago), the dungeon (also added in 2012 with the last tweek in 2016) the other structure that have a link to the past of the minecraft world could also be improved to suit the new archeology features.

If my english isn't perfect sorry, i'm just a french who's trying to write his idea in english

Looking for YA books featuring travel adventures and archeology

I have some nieces and nephews ( nieces 9,11, and nephew 5) who are into archeology and travel and who are taking a long US road trip this summer. I would like to get them some on theme books for the trip. They all read very well, and typically read above their grade levels, but still need thematically appropriate material for their ages (nothing too scary or graphic). They will be visiting some cave dwelling ruins and national parks on the trip, but the travel adventures don’t need to match precisely, just the spirit of travel and history/archeology and adventure. Seeking good book recommendations.

Science Fiction Book Involving Alien Archeology, the Number 37, and Possibly Timelines.

I read this sci-fi book before 2006.

I only remember a few things strongly:

  • At least one of the characters was an archeologist on another planet. I think there were multiple characters that we followed on different worlds (possibly at the same time, i.e. not everyone was in the same place).

  • One of the people that we followed may have been stuck on a world in a weird way (like a wormhole or special space opening that they were semi-trapped behind?).

  • One of the things that the archeologist(s) find is some kind of interface that seems to simulate or display different timelines in history where a star map keeps changing to show which stars are controlled by which alien civilization.

  • This is important: one of the main characters had a servant that may have been a robot or an alien. At one point, the characters are wondering about the signficance of the number 37, and the robot/alien servant character says something along the lines of "If a three digit number is divisible with 37, another number divisible by 37 can be generated by transferring first digit at the end of a number. For example: 814 and 148."

This is possibly a Jack McDevitt novel, but I haven't read anything else by McDevitt, and it turns out, the "37" thing is not something that people include in their reviews of novels.
