Job applications from men are discriminated against when they apply for female-dominated occupations, such as nursing, childcare and house cleaning. I wrote a cluster fuck of an application essay, and now the dean of admissions wants to schedule a phone call with me.

So to start off, this is in California, i’m a high school senior boy (17). This is my senior year so I started applying to colleges, ordinary stuff y’know. Well i applied to all my top schools in the state and i saw that a certain christian/religious school was letting people apply for free. So me being the good little Mexican mormon boy that I am, I started the application, since i heard good things about this school. So I started my application but left a few things unfinished, most notably the section where i needed to submit and essay.

One day, I was absolutely pissed off by something i don’t remember what, I was just pissed, and in my infinite wisdom and because i didn’t really care all that much about this application, I wrote out the most fouled mouth, shitstorm of an essay my two brain cells could muster. It was the closest thing to a therapy session I have ever experienced. Couple days after that I went back to it and said β€œoh it looks like I did my essay, good job past me” and proceeded to submit it. Now the dean of admissions herself has sent me an email asking to schedule a phone call, should I ignore her, and move on, or should I take the phone call? if i ignore her will their be consequences?

TLDR: I submitted a cluster fuck of an essay filled with profanities to a Christian/religious school, Now the dean of admissions herself wants to have a phone call with me, somebody help me please.

Update: I have scheduled a nice leisure chat with the dean next Tuesday

Update: I just finished the call with the dean, he somehow despite it all, approves of this essay. In fact he loves it, he simply wants me to rewrite it a little and email it to him, So now heres where i need help, how do i rewrite this cluster fuck?

You should get a response from a company/business if your job application was unsuccessful

Companies are lazy as fuck and at the very least can let one know if the application was unsuccessful. It costs unnecessary time waste for people who applied just to never hear from said company again, waiting and maybe hoping, just to apply for something else still not hearing from them. Idk why this is even a thing, they don't even have common decency to let one know. And idc if many people applied they can still let you know through an email or sms or just anything. Is that too much to ask

YSK: when applying to companies abroad, adapt the information in your application to an international context (including adding country phone codes)

When applying to a company abroad, make sure that the information you present is understandable for someone from that country.

This includes:

  • Adding the country codes to your phone number (+1 for US)
  • Adding the country to places you worked / studied instead of only states
  • Adding the country / city where you're living
  • Not using abbreviations that may not be understood from someone with a different background

Why YSK? Not doing this hinders your chance of getting that job because it makes it more difficult for the company to understand your application. Also, it makes you look like you either lack intercultural competence which companies hiring international applicants will most likely care about and/or indicate that you aren't aware that the job you just applied to is not in your home country and you didn't care to look it up, which almost every company will care about.

Source: I'm a hiring manager at a European company and every application from US Americans I have received recently makes this mistake (seems to be a uniquely American thing but it's of course still applicable for others as well). The first time I received an application with a phone code of (321) or something I was wondering what country code this was until I figured out it's from the US.

My dad, with 35 years experience as an engineer, just discovered the bullshit that is today's application process.

Let me preface that my dad is technically a boomer, but does not have the mentality of one. He's very liberal, caucused for Bernie twice, and is one of the smartest people I know.

He was let go last May when his project ran out of funding to continue, so he's enjoying his early retirement, but he's bored. Salary doesn't matter. He's in the position where he wants to make a difference and follow his passion. His passion for the last 10 years has been climate change. He built a house with my mom that's as eco friendly as possible: solar panels, geothermal, rain barrels, etc. And he loves to teach others about it. You know when someone starts talking about their passion and they light up and get excited about it? That's my dad when I ask him about his solar panels and the data surrounding it. "Charlesdickens2007, check out how much power we got- and look- that's where you can see when the sun came out!"

Recently he's been emailing me applications with a "wtf" in the subject line. They want superman. A person that can get on a roof, train the workers, be a salesman, a CDL driver, and program. Starting salary? 40k plus commission. He just wants to talk to people about solar, but he's a programmer, not someone to get on a roof or drive a rig.

He then told me his history with job hunting, went like this:

His internship in college finished and was transitioned into a full-time job with benefits with an aerotech company. He was asked "what division do you want to work in? Here are your 5 options" he said, "Flight simulation looks cool, I'll do that" and that's how he got his first job in engineering.

When my maternal grandpa died (1992), he sent his resume to a headhunter a few states over and told them, "hey, find me a job that pays x that's in this state", he turned down a couple offers and got his second job.

5 years later he was laid off, but interviewed for a new position in a different state and moved the family with very little transition time and a large salary increase. Our next house was massive, brand new, and he saved enough to put me and my brother through college. He worked at that company for 15 years and they put him through school again. Twice. He left that position due to new management, with two additional masters degrees that were paid for by the company.

Now, he's asking me tips on how to build a linked-in account. He's sending me applications asking me if it sounds like a good company.

I told him my exper

I consulted a career counselor in December whose advice was to use LinkedIn and reach out to people I know to beg them for work. The only thing I got from my effort on LinkedIn was an attempt to scam me via a fake job posting for Grupo Santillana. My son said to me, "isn't it weird to get jobs from Reddit?" I said, "yeah, but it's working better than the legit ways."

Edit: I'm fortunate that I'm in a field that makes freelancing easier. Gig work.

(21m) Fantastic bug bounty experience + OSCP + CVE After 1000+ job applications and 10 months but still can't get a job

Guys pls I really hope someone can give me some advice here

I start doing full-time bug bounty in 2019 and I get huge success on bug bounty (I have made 75k from 2019 on H1 and Bugcrowd. 85% of my reports is Webapp and API and 15% of my report is mobile apps) but bug-bounty is really stressful because you literally have to spend 24/7 searching for bugs. Bug bounty hunting is like a life without a goal even I really love computer hacking. I want to spend my free time in the real world doing something else: dating, enjoying nature, flying, etc. Also, there is a significant risk associated with the work. What if I spend 100 hours but find no bugs?

So I decide to full quit bug bounty hunting and start searching for a pen-testing job, SOC analyst, IT internships, etc on LinkedIn and indeed in 2020 May. I've applied for many jobs without getting a single interview. Most company just ghosted me and I keep getting reject email like this:

(Dear XYZ,

Thank you for applying for the position of XYZ at XYZ, Inc. After careful consideration, we regret to inform you that you have not been selected for this position.)

I have only 6 times phone interview with HR and they asked me what's bug-bounty so I explain to them but then they all just like this is not a work-experience(real-job) I feel like most HR just don't count my self-employed experience. One of the HR has told me that we're looking for a candidate with at least 5 years of work experience. I was like how can I get work experience if I don't even have a job opportunity.

I really want to go to college but I cannot sign up for FAFSA because I have only 1.8GPA(I having some trouble of spelling and reading since I got dyslexia) I don't "think" I have trouble communicating with people even English wasn't my first language I guess?

Anyway, My bank account has around $4000 left, so that means I have to go back to bug-bounty because I have to start worrying about paying my bills and rent. I really don't know what to do I also never has an interview with any security team members before but only HR.

I feel like I am a loser because everyone around me has a girlfriend and good parents like they don't have to worry about bills, rent, and school, etc. I start drinking beer at the bar by myself or my apartments and I also start trying to talk to my friend to lower my pressure but useless because none of my friends has been in my situation before so they all just like are you serious want to kill urself just because yo

[Advice] Go slow... to go fast, aka slow is smooth, smooth is fast: How I went from being biggest procrastinator to someone with calm and consistent discipline PART 2 - Practical applications to getting discipline and living your best life

Pop quiz.

It’s 10 pm and you have a deadline tomorrow at 8 am. You’ve been procrastinating hard on an assignment by watching YouTube. You’re now stressed and panicky. You feel an enormous amount of anxiety that’s amplifying your impulses for just a little more of your vice, while you think about all the work you desperately need to do, yet somehow dread (and the sleep you’ll have to sacrifice to do it).

What should you do?

A) Slap yourself in face, call yourself an idiot for wasting the whole damn day, wrap a belt around you and the chair so you stop getting up to grab junk food, and FORCE yourself to do the thing and be done.

B) So the opposite of that. Detach yourself from your current situation. Put your coat on, grab the dog, and go for night walk. Waste more time not doing the work....

C) Send your professor a corrupted/unopenable PDF file, in the hopes that'll buy you a day or two.

Answer to that in second (it's not C, unfortunately). But first a little context...

...

Last week I posted here a short post on the idea of β€œgoing slow to go fast”, as in, in life there are many ways in which trying to do things the β€˜fast way’ often leads to mistakes, delays or poor performance; so in reality the β€˜slow way’ would have in fact been the faster way. We’d do well to remember and repeat this mantra, or a similar one, in times where we find ourselves stressed and rushing.

The post did quite well with over 2k upvotes, and I later noted that I was amazed and pleased because it was a testament to the maturity of the people of this subβ€”such advice is nuanced and counter to more 'pop' and easy to digest notions of self-discipline that centers around just do it pep talks.

Anyway, one user noted that I didn’t fully tackle the practicality of such advice. Like it makes sense to check for the t-shirt tag when putting on a shirt in the dark (lest you put it on backwards), but how does this notion extend and apply to getting disciplined, i.e. ending procrastination and compulsions to check Reddit, YouTube etc, starting up on good habits and living out our best lives.

So that’s what I want to address in this post.

Quick note though; I’m no expert, though I play one on TV (aka I have 10+ years of addictions and struggles, and it’s only just recently that I’ve started getting my habits in order). These are just the result of my various brainst

People who work in the Admissions Office (students/officers/private counselors), how is this year's application different from previous years and what are you doing?

Now we all know that the pandemic has messed everything up and things definitely look different this year. We've all heard about grade inflation, ECs getting canceled, limited in-person vists/interview, etc, but what I want to know is how does the application look different from the previous years? Do you see drastic changes in stuff like essays or the competitiveness of an application? or the number of applications?

And what are you doing to make a fair assessment of applications? We would all love to hear from admissions folks, who frequent this sub, and learn what's it like working inside the admissions office this year.

EDIT: Thank you all for your insights. I also wanted to know how the situation has affected international students in particular.

WEEKLY RECRUITING THREAD - Ask here about the Recruitment/Application Processes, Trade Availability, Requirements to Join, Basic & Occupational Training, and other questions relating directly or indirectly to joining the Canadian Armed Forces.

##This is the thread to ask about the Recruitment/Application Processes, Trade Availability, Requirements to Join, Basic & Occupational Training, and other questions relating directly or indirectly to joining the Canadian Armed Forces.

Before you post, please ensure:

  1. You read through the the previous Recruiting Threads.

  2. Read through the Recruiting FAQ, and;

    a. The NEW "What to expect on BMQ/BMOQ Info thread".

  3. Use the subreddit's search feature, located at the top of the sidebar.

  4. Check your email spam folder! The answer to your recent visit to CFRC may lie within!

  • With those four simple steps, finding your answer may be quicker than you think! (Answers to your questions may have already been asked.)

This thread will remain stickied for one week and will renew Sundays at approx. 2200hrs ET.

RULES OF THE THREAD:

  1. Trolling, off-topic comments, sarcastic, or wrong info/answers/single word answers will be removed. Same with out-dated information, anecdotal (" I knew a guy who...") or bad advice; these comments will also be removed.

  2. Please don't delete your questions (or answers), as others/lurkers may be looking for that same info. Questions duplicated throughout the thread may be removed by Mods, and those re-posting may be restricted from participating.

  3. NO "Let me Google that for you" or "A quick search of the subreddit/Google..." -type answers. We're more professional and mature than that. Quote your source and provide a link, but make sure the info you provide is current (within a couple of years). But, it is strongly suggested you see points 1-3 above.

  4. Please do not send PM's to people answering your questions. Conversely, don't ask for PM's from people posting questions. Ask your questions, give answers in these threads, for all to see. We can't see your PM's, and someone lurking may be looking for the same answer/question. If the questions are too "sensitive," then use a throwaway, or save it for the MCC Interview. Offenders will be reported to the Mods, and potentially banned from participating in these threads.

  5. **Questions regarding Medical Eligibility (except Vision) will be removed, as no one here is qualified to answer whether or not you will be able
