I’m a union rep in a suburban school of a very blue state. Our monthly union board meetings are all on zoom right now, and several of us joined the meeting from our buildings (eta: this is about an hour after the school day ended). At the moment this happened we were discussing a new community group that was created to “fix [district] schools” and save the students from liberal indoctrination. While we were discussing how to respond to this anonymous group that’s been sending vaguely threatening messages to the School Committee attacking teachers, the principal came into these two teachers’ classrooms and told them that the school had been getting threatening calls and they should all leave for their safety.
This is all in response to the district’s decision to acknowledge that there was an attack on the nation’s capitol last week and that it was wrong.
There have been a lot of harassing calls and emails this year, attacking teachers who present the famous media bias chart in their media literacy class, or who talk about climate change in biology, or political lies while teaching 1984.
I’m lucky, as a high school government teacher I have a lot of cover to discuss these events and issues in depth. But I am appalled that today two of my elementary school level colleagues were harassed into fleeing their workplace.
This is America.
As I waited for her in the car, the last thing I expected to hear was her scream followed by a gunshot.

Friendly warning: The ice on Grenadier Pond is not safe.
This afternoon, I fell through in the middle section, towards the western shore, opposite the High Park side. I am an experienced pond skater, learning to test the ice since I was a little boy. I had been testing several different areas around Grenadier Pond, and skated for a few hours at the north end where the ice is smoothest.
But going back to the south end where I had entered, I went through the ice up to my neck. There is a hidden pocket of thin ice under a coating of shell ice that I had skated past before.
I've fallen through ice before, and I'm a cold water swimmer, so I could cope and keep breaking through to more solid ice. But lucky for me I also had the assistance of another skater so that I could get out of the water faster.
Friendly warning: even for experienced adventurers -- for now, stick to the shore in High Park.
