Just because we are live in Africa doesn’t mean we don’t have basic amenities
Hey guys, newbie here
I’m African and I’ve realized that whenever I start talking to someone online and I mention that I do in fact live in Africa, the entire conversation goes sideways and then it becomes “how do you have internet?” “ do you see lions frequently?” And other weird questions like that. And I’m not the only one who gets questions like that.
My mum went to the USA a couple years back for an internship at a Montessori school. She still keeps in touch with one of the teachers there via email and Facebook. But last week when they were talking about ideas for online school during this pandemic, the lady still asked if there was access to electricity and internet in our community. My mum was quite irritated and she had to explain that yes, we have internet access in our homes and business and that’s how we’re able to use social media and email.
I understand that the media in these places depicts Africa as a place where people wear leaves and hides and sleep in huts but do

AITA for writing a poem about blackness and Africa?
My mom is white, my dad is black, but with a white Cuban mother. My siblings all look pretty stereotypically mixed black/white. I look white, with super curly hair and I get really dark tan in the sun. It's been a source of contention for some of my dad's side of the family all my life--with some of them claiming I'm "too white" to be my dad's biological child. I've struggled with my racial identity all my life--too white to be black, but I'm not fully white either and it feels wrong to ignore my black half.
This past semester, I was in a poetry class, and one of our assignments was to write an identity poem. It felt right to write about my struggle with my racial identity. The opening line was "Africa runs in my veins". We email the poems to the whole class before the class meeting so that everyone has a chance to make notes on each one for feedback. One girl in the class got very upset with me, and emailed back (using "reply all") lecturing me about "claiming blackness" and how the

I hate how “woke” Black Americans have a romanticized view of Africa
I’m Nigerian and I find it laughable how African Americans, specifically African American women on the more leftist liberal side, believe that almost everything associated with slutiness or the shaming of women’s body is western Eurocentric ideology which is entirely untrue.
What I find slightly offensive, is that a lot of “woke” Black Americans believe that everything disagree with is a white oppressive ideal and that African people are some liberal mystical free-range people to let them do what they want. African people, despite the stereotypes, are a diverse complex group of people who do share a lot of the same ideals as European cultures. We’re not a bunch of wild idiots fucking each other and doing God knows what.
The idea that the concept of virginity or traditional gender roles is an oppressive ideal forced into African descendant women is a bold face lie. In West African cultures it’s heavily frowned upon for a woman to be sexually promiscuous and most men will divorce the

Will the next 30yr growth region be Africa? How to adjust portfolio?
In part inspired by the book Factfullness by Hans Rosling there are some facts that have me thinking:
- According to the UN the total population of Africa will be the fastest growing in the next 30+ years. EU is set to shrink. Asia will grow as well.
- The majority of the African population is moving out of (extreme) poverty and entering "level 2" or "level 3" i.e. consuming like we did in the 60's. This leads me to believe that their economy will be developing including sectors like Utilities, Consumer Products. There are probably some lessons to learn from the development of South East Asia.
- Life expectancy is set to increase, which impacts spending.
The points above (and I'm probably missing a few) lead me to believe that we might see significant growth in the region. What are your opinions? Am I missing something? What would be a good strategy to incorporate the region into my index portfolio? Recommendations for ETF's (that I can buy in EU).

[Serious] Hi, I'm a linguist studying language change and contact in northern Africa. AMA
I research language change and contact in northern Africa (particularly between Arabic, Berber, and Songhay), using etymological data, and sometimes manuscript materials, to reconstruct its linguistic history. I've worked on documenting and describing two minority languages of the region - Siwi (Berber, western Egypt) and Korandje (Songhay, southwestern Algeria) - as well as Algerian Arabic. As a natural outgrowth of studying language change there, I also study the development of agreement: how do languages end up marking the same information redundantly in two different places, and how wide is the range of possibilities? So if you have any questions about linguistics and language history and the like, AMA, I guess (ويمكن طرح الأسئلة بالعربية طبعا).

People in Africa, what are ways colonialism has affected your life that people don’t often consider?
My grandfather was the lead guitarist and vocalist of a band called The Drifters in South Africa. His passion for music has always inspired me and I consider him to be one of the coolest people I know (1960s).
I’m so sick of people who have never been to South Africa telling me about South Africa!
I’m sick and tired of people who’ve never been to South Africa telling me about my own country because they did some lesson on apartheid. This naturally qualifies them as South African experts and they’ll clearly explain why I’m sitting in the dark, why my neighbours and my mother survived a farm attack (this doesn’t happen apparently) and why the ANC furlough scheme is the way it is.
I’ve just had someone tell me that South Africa falling into its current state is because of the pandemic, not because of the ANC! I shouldn’t lay blame in the wrong place.
This is from someone who’s never been to the country but is reliably informed because they read the New York Times! Fucking astounding!
Edit: Just to be clear, I wasn’t directing this at Americans, so if you’re American please don’t feel I’m having a pop at you.
