DC 775 motor actuator

I've been investigating using 775's and other cheap DC motors along with quadrature encoders to build actuators. They're not beautiful and they're not small, but they're very strong and very cheap.

775 motor + encoder + 4:1 planetary reduction

With a bit of PID tuning it's working great. I haven't measured torque properly yet, but the stall torque is strong enough to endanger my fingers, and I can't stop it while it's moving by hand.

The entire thing cost about $14 ($5 motor, $7 encoder, $2 driver), but the encoder is actually too precise for this application, and I think I'll probably downgrade to a $1.50 version for subsequent builds.

2015 Ford Taurus Blend Door Actuator

Our air/heat is stuck on defrost and everything seems to point to the blend door actuator. I figured I'd change it out first because it's easier to get to than the vacuum lines if that turns out to be the problem. Then I looked at the AllData procedure for the actuator and wondering if that's something I should tackle with limited experience.

Is that something I should try to do with limited tools and experience with working on newer cars, or am I overestimating how difficult it will be?

KOWAL Actuator (for Sanwa JLF) Design Flaws and Mod Ideas?

Hi friends,

I own a Kowal oversized actuator for Sanwa JLFs. Unfortunately, it is a compromise. The spring tension feels uneven compared to stock; the latter feels notably smoother and more consistent in motion. Moreover, The Kowal makes the tension slightly stiffer overall, which an actuator should not cause.

I now realize that the part that cups the spring has two design flaws:

  1. The diameter at the base of the "cup" is about 1.5-2 mm greater than the stock actuator, partly because that whole section of the Kowal actuator is cylindrical instead of conical. Perhaps this causes the closed end of the spring to shift/slip laterally inside the actuator during movement.
  2. The depth is about 1-1.5 mm shallower than the stock actuator. Thus, the spring is more compressed than it should be.

My questions are:

  1. Does anyone have ideas on how to mod the Kowal actuator to salvage it? I was thinking about attaching sandpaper to the flat end of a wooden pencil to deepen the cup section, but then I might accidentally widen that area in the process, exacerbating issue #1 even further!
  2. For someone who likes the loose JLF spring tension but would welcome a slightly shorter actuation distance, which stock stick would be a good choice? If the metal bars covering the microswitches make an LS-32 feel stiffer, I probably wouldn't love that.

Thank you for any and all thoughts.

Optimizing a system with actuator redundancy (control diagram included)

Hi r/ControlTheory. I am trying to synthesize a framework to control a system with two actuators, with distinct plants (P1 & P2). The output of each plant (Y1 & Y2) combined is the "end effector", and the goal is to track a reference input (R) with the sum of Y1 and Y2. In order to do this, I want to be able to design a controller for each plant (C1 & C2) such that the error (E) is minimized. While this may seem like a rather straightforward optimal control problem, I am struggling with how to include constraints on the outputs Y1 & Y2.

I have been looking into constrained optimization, where I could potentially construct a cost function that would minimize E while penalizing the outputs Y1 & Y2 based on the given constraints, but I haven't found any resources dealing with a similar problem. Would it be easier to formulate this in state-space? Any advice or resources would be greatly appreciated.

2001 SV650 clutch worm gear actuator ball bearing size?

Hi all! I have a 2001 SV650 and I was cleaning its clutch worm drive the other day and ended up losing a few of the small ball bearings that sit inside of it. I've looked all over the internet but have only been able to find one thread, with one guy mentioning the little ball bearings are 1/8" in diameter. I would normally just bring my existing ball bearings to a store and size them up to find matching ones, but I live in Ontario and we are in full COVID lockdown for the entire month, meaning many stores are closed or only open for curbside pickup. I would measure the ball bearings I have still, but I don't own anything accurate enough to measure small diameters (like a pair of measurement calipers). Would anyone happen to know the correct size?

Correction: S21 haptics are excellent, but would be improved by moving actuator location

I previously briefly tried out the S21 phones in a store and made a post saying that they felt weaker than previous models; you can read that post here. I got some feedback from people more familiar with Samsung phones than me and I have since received my S21 Ultra (I got navy so it took a long time). I can now say that the haptics are actually excellent once you increase the vibration intensity in settings. Additionally, the Samsung keyboard is lower intensity than Gboard. The haptics are stronger at the top of the phone, so I do think it would be an improvement to move it down towards the bottom where you're typing and swiping and holding the phone, and I think this is the reason that the Note 20 felt stronger to me when I tried them side-by-side. And it does have haptic feedback when moving the cursor, which I couldn't feel in the store with the intensity turned down. But I'm most impressed by settings sliders (not just in Samsung apps but also in Google and others), which when you tap on them feel like the slider is moving across the phone, and turning on vibrate ring mode feels like what Nintendo described with the ice cubes shaking in their Joy-Con controllers when they first showed them off in a video. This is a huge improvement over the linear actuator in my Pixel 2 XL. It's tight, strong after adjusting the settings, and Samsung's software implementation with the various different effects adds a lot to the experience for me (perhaps these were created by Cirrus Logic, who makes the haptic hardware, but I don't know if any other Android phones are implementing these vibration profiles for toggles, etc).
