Raise your hand if you didn’t get any Mother’s Day acknowledgment on Sunday.

I don’t want gifts. A card would be nice but it’s not totally necessary. But if you wake my ass up at 7:30 to go have breakfast with your mom, give her a card and gift, and then spend the entire day with me, at bare minimum at least say “Happy Mother’s Day”. The five year old said it half a dozen times today. She showed appreciation and she doesn’t even know the definition of the word appreciation. I talked to you about why I was upset and you didn’t seem all that sorry. You just kind of blew it off. I’m pregnant with another baby. I’m stressed the fuck out. This day was supposed to be special but instead I just cried all day and you didn’t do anything to make it better. Thanks a fucking lot.

Ladies, use this comment section and LET IT ALL OUT. Let’s all scream into the Reddit void together. At least we can all listen to each other since our partners obviously fucking won’t.

Crab land acknowledgment 🦀

I recently ran across this short video by PBS talking about how crabs (🦀) evolved multiple times in the fossil record. The vaguely soy mannerisms of the host are a bit annoying, but nothing compared to the land acknowledgements at the end (@6:30) https://youtu.be/wvfR3XLXPvw?t=387

"Many paleontological discoveries have been made on indigenous land, often without the consultation, permission or recognition of its original inhabitants. So we at PBS want to acknowledge these people's traditional and ongoing relationship with that land and with the fossils it contains."

This is some of the dumbest shit that I've ever heard. Ah yes, we need to acknowledge indigenous people who didn't even contribute to the phylogenetic placement of these organisms (crabs 🦀) within the phylum Arthropoda and furthermore only reached North America at most 20000 years and only ~700 years in the case of the Maori getting to New Zealand. The entire history of the native people that lived and died on this land is only 0.0001% of the time of the fossil record (200 million years), but we have to acknowledge them forever because they happen to turn up in very recent geological history after they killed all of the Pleistocene Megafauna. The original inhabitants of the land are fucking CRABS! 🦀 🦀 🦀

Anyway, idpol is cancer. 🦀 Haha, get it?

Time for public acknowledgment that the game is faulty/not working as intended?

I know this post will come with a lot of criticism and a lot of negativity. Also, this is probably more for residents in the US that are attempting to get a refund through PSN.

With that said, the game in its current state is a faulty product. You have people with character wipes, not able to login(even after today’s patch), terrible matchmaking lag, the inability to even matchmaker(especially cross platform), etc. The list goes on.

The character wipes are the worst offender. The characters gear is gone and you can’t even play that character due to some backend fail safe that’s implemented. I(thousands of others) can’t even log in to our characters to even have friends help gear us back out. We are 100% locked out of our characters. The updates on the fix for this has gone from far and few between to it sounds like it’s something a lot more difficult than they anticipated. Which is leading to more time my character is unplayable.

I could level another character. It’s what I’ve been told on discord. I don’t want to level/gear a new character. I don’t have the time or the motivation to level another character.

There are a lot of issues with this game and it seems like it’s flying under the radar. Some people have not been able to access their character for a month. That’s unacceptable. I really don’t think it’s unfair to ask PCF to acknowledge their game is faulty so those of us who want a refund can get one. I’ve been patient, but with the recent patch/news today I don’t see a fix happening anytime soon.

Is it ever okay to exclude a co-supervisor from a PhD thesis acknowledgments?

I’m submitting my PhD in a few weeks (hooray!) but having an ethical dilemma. In my university, it is common to have a primary supervisor and a co-supervisor where the primary supervisor has never supervised a PhD student. My main supervisor, whom I’ll call Bob, has been wonderful. Although junior and with little supervisory experience, he has met with me once a week every week of my PhD. He has been nothing but supportive and even his criticisms are still said in a way that make me feel good about myself. He is everything I could want in a supervisor and I am so grateful for his help, advice, and mentorship.

My secondary supervisor, whom we’ll call Marie, has been disengaged from my work from day 1. She is the textbook definition of narcissist. She will only come to me when she needs something from me, like to give a lecture or grade papers. Marie also believes she is above admin work and has caused serious negative consequences to me over the course of my PhD from not approving forms on time (despite many many many emails from me and Bob). This has resulted in me not getting paid multiple months in a row, multiple times. I also was de-registered as a student at one point because she chose not to transfer scholarship funds to pay my tuition in time. This is just the tip of the iceberg of the issues that we have had, and she has refused to apologize for any of these issues—even when the head of school got involved. She has never asked to meet with me over the 4 years of my research (always me asking for meetings), and she has never read a single word of my thesis. This doesn’t seem to concern her even though her name will be attached to my work.

Very recently, Bob had a serious emergency for a few weeks and was unable to read my first full thesis draft that I had sent to them. Long story short, I emailed Marie many times asking for her to read my draft and give me feedback because SOMEONE needed to read it before I submit. She ignored all of this and yet again refused to engage. However, she had previously asked me to give a lecture yesterday, which I did, and we overlapped in a private zoom group. Heated words were exchanged because I (calmly) told her I was disappointed that she was neglecting her duty as a supervisor to read my thesis, and she didn’t like being held accountable for her actions. She then said some very unkind words to me and hung up.

Thankfully, Bob just sent me loads of feedback and I’m feeling a lot better about my work. However,

I feel like there needs to be more acknowledgment of asian cuisine's many contributions to modern day vegan staples

I'm pretty new to the world of veganism and I've been reading a lot of recipe blogs/vegan subreddit posts (been lurking here a long time!) and vegan bloggers. And lately I've been feeling...some kind of way about all of the references to tofu, seitan, dairy substitutes, and other mock meats.

Whenever a classic vegan substitute comes up, they're always like "we know tofu is weird, but if you wring all the moisture out of it and deep fry it for 3 hours we promise you'll love it!!" or "seitan is a funny sounding word and it looks wrinkly and ugly but it's a GREAT SOURCE OF PROTEIN" or some other kind of statement with a million pleading caveats and acknowledgments. It's as if the subtext is, hey look at these wacky foods! Sorry they're kinda strange, but isn't it great that someone invented these so we vegans can have protein! And it's like but wait, I literally grew up eating this stuff, it's not exotic or weird. The first dairy free milk that I can remember hitting mainstream supermarket shelves was soy milk, which is like a staple of Asian family households!! (shout out to the 80% of us who can't digest lactose, we out here 😔🤘) Like these foods weren't created just for people who are vegan, literally billions of people incorporate them into their everyday omnivorous diets. I legit used to eat tofu stir fried with beef. I almost don't like the term "vegan substitute" for these foods, bc for me, they were just...regular foods. It feels like a major part of my cultural diet has been co-opted by (mostly white) people who are documenting their ✨plant-based journey✨. On the one hand, I'm glad that these foods are making their way onto more plates, but on the other hand, I wish more credit was given to the major Asian influences on modern-day veganism.

To be clear, this problem is wayyy worse outside of the vegan community. And the sites I've been getting these recipes from are definitely heavy into the h e l t h aspect and light on activism. But I almost expect that from meat eaters because their dietary perspective is still more limited. I feel like vegans should know better, especially since veganism is so much more than a diet, it's about decolonizing food and making it as equitable as possible.

PS for context I'm Asian-American, born/grew up in states, parents both immigrants from east asia.

Edit: I initially wrote this post from the viewpoint of someone who grew up in an asian household, but as many commenters rightfully pointed out, this is in no way

A note about PCR results after arriving in keflavik airport, reykjavik. Do not worry about not getting the acknowledgment sms message from the system.

TLDR; my wife got an acknowledgment sms right after getting the pcr test, but i did not. I was afraid that meant i wasn't properly enrolled in the notification system when our negative result would happen. She got her notification an hour before me, but eventually i did get my negative result too. Lesson: Just be patient.

We got in at 5:50am, as our flight arrived early. We did the necessary pre-registration, and the process at the airport was fast since we had our bar code ready for scanning.

I would say i was one of the first 40 people during the day to get his pcr test done, around 6am or so. The woman who scanned me out said I should expect a result in about 5 hours (11am). My wife did hers at the same time, a couple stalls down. She immediately got a text saying the following:

>(English below) <my wife's name>, hér með er staðfest að þú ert undanþeginn sóttkví vegna komunnar til landsins. Vertu vakandi fyrir einkennum COVID-19 og leitaðu sýnatöku ef einkenna verður vart.
>
>This confirms that you are exempt from quarantine upon arrival in Iceland. Be aware of the symptoms of COVID-19 and seek testing if symptoms occur.

I did not. We asked around the airport as we were waiting for the car rental pickup, but no one working there knew if it meant she had already tested negative or not. *It did not*

We went to our hotel for quarantining and waited from 7 until 3pm (we were exhausted). She got a notification on her iceland contact trace app that she was negative. I did not. I was worried that since I did NOT get that message, they did not properly scan me in and i wouldn't get a result for 24 hours, rendering our real hotel booking lost. I called everyone i could and all the information numbers on covid.is site, the airport, the airline, and none of them knew whom to speak with. An hour later I got my notification as well (big sigh of relief). We then went to blue lagoon and checked in, knowing we were both vaccinated and covid negative.

At the blue lagoon, several other guests had the same issues (couple where one got the original acknowledgement sms and the other did not).

It took 10 hours for both of us to get our tests, being first did not seem to affect our notification time. Be prepared for this and have a quarantine hotel booked. We had called around and asked and found a good one for this (they were quite helpful and friendly). Arctic wind motel.

AITA for expecting acknowledgment from my mum that some things she tells my children are inappropriate?

I (34F) am the oldest of 4 children where I have been the first to marry and have children of my own. My parents separated 7 years ago due to numerous issues on both sides of the marriage however the final straw was my father texting inappropriately with a close friend of my mums. While I don’t condone this behaviour, I preferred to attempt to sit on the fence and maintain a relationship with both parents however certain actions, including mum secretly recording phone conversations I had with dad regarding finances in an attempt to find out information made it difficult to remain impartial.

Mum has resented that I didn’t automatically side with her based on dads behaviour however as it was not my marriage and I felt it best to not take part in the divorce shenanigans.

My main issue stems from mums need to tell everyone about what ended the marriage, most notably my children. My daughter (6F) questioned mum as to why her and my dad were no longer together and although the initial response was “we didn’t get along anymore”, she followed it up with a smug face, “and Poppy (her ex) had another women”. To say I was fuming is an understatement. I couldn’t make a big deal out of it as my daughter would have then known it was a “thing”. My daughter has a habit of telling people her life story and I’m concerned, particularly as she attends a conservative catholic school, that retelling this will bode poorly for the family in not only actions, but what we discuss in front of the children. I believe that given 6F age, this explanation was inappropriate.

On another occasion, mum told the same daughter about a baby she was carrying (my brother) that unfortunately passed away during pregnancy, which was only weeks after my husband and I had told our daughter that we were expecting another baby. While I am not adverse to having pregnancy/baby loss discussions with our children in the future, I believed the timing was poor and we spent several months trying to calm our daughter that her baby brother/sister was not going to die like nanas baby. While I would have waited a lot longer to tell our children about my new pregnancy, I unfortunately get very ill for the entire pregnancy and all those that know us would have told the kids as soon as they mentioned I was sick, that mummy must have a baby in her tummy spoiling the surprise from us, their parents.

I was 5 when my mum suffered the pregnancy loss, and I remember many things associated with this including the viewin

Just in time for Mother’s Day: If someone had a parent/parents that caused them to have issues later on in life they don’t owe them a “Happy Parent Day” acknowledgment.

This isn’t directed to the parents that are actually good to their children and support them, though many parents that think they are fit this post. You aren’t owed for keeping your kids alive until a certain age, it was your choice to have them and if you made the mistake of having them at the wrong time or with the wrong person you aren’t automatically a good parent for not putting your kids in an orphanage or not getting an abortion. Being a parent isn’t just about being there for your kids financially either, if your child grows into an adult with mental health issues because of how they were raised then you, the parent, fucked up and you should probably take some responsibility for it. This logic contradicts most low quality parent’s opinions but facts are facts, when parents pull this garbage their children have a harder time adjusting to later life and it’s not just bad for the grown child it’s also bad for society, if you raised a child that became homeless because of your shortcomings they don’t owe you anything on parent day, suck it up and deal with your choices.

Feelings on Land Acknowledgments

Does anyone else feel like land acknowledgements are quite performative. They just seem like a big “fuck you” in my opinion. Listening to them sounds like to me “We acknowledge that we stole your land but we won’t give it back but we’re sorry.” Like imagine someone broke into your house, kicked you out, then refused to let you back in and all you could say was “Oops, sorry.”

I’m not from the Cayuga nation nor indigenous so I’m wonder what others, especially indigenous people, think. Couldn’t we do something more substantive? According to the Cayuga nation website, the Cayuga nation has been reacquiring their land by purchasing it (land which is rightfully theirs by law according to The Treaty of Canandaigua), so wouldnt it only be right for Cornell to assist this pursuit. Does anyone know if Cornell is actually doing anything for the Cayuga nation? Like this school has billions of dollars, if we aren’t doing anything, we definitely can.

So as a young adult I’ve been trying to educate myself on many social, racial issues and be aware and active as I can. But I often feel erased from these spaces and feel like I have no guidance. Like those Instagram posts that tell Asians or other BIPOC to rest and take care of themselves and that white people need to shoulder more of burden to change their culture. But how am I supposed to navigate that kind of directive? Half and half? What does that even look like? Or somehow fully both..? Does this depend more on appearance of someone is white passing or not? Is that problematic? I’m so confused. I saw one post that acknowledged and validated how mixed people can suffer and hurt from these events and it felt really nice and wish more activist organizations would do that.

Transparency, empathy, and acknowledgment from SDSU.

Why is there such a lack of these from the SDSU higher administration. I feel like professors, advisors, and students are all getting in a sense "ignored".

The school gives us announcements and tells us what they plan on doing. Meanwhile, students and staff will voice concerns, ask questions and even pose arguments. All the SCHOOL (higher administration) will say is very generic responses that don't at all answer any questions or concerns that any of us have.

Given that it's a state school it make me wonder how many of these choices is from the state and how much from the school. One thing I will argue is that regardless if many of the choices the school has made has been more of the state telling them vs choosing on their own, they do make the choice of how they want to communicate the information to students and staff. I think this is where they drop the ball.

They tell us the least amount of information with little to no regard about concerns, wants, or needs from the community of which they are addressing. They don't even acknowledge these issues, or those posing them.

As a student it makes me feel unheard and as though I have no say or control over my education, which I am paying an arm and a leg for.

I came in during Fall 2020 so maybe my perseption is skewed due to the pandemic. But this is how I feel about the school. Especially as a transfer.

Is this just me?

I keep reading articles that state the reason the mainstream scientific community doesn't want to acknowledge the existence is because it would disprove the current theory of evolution. Lack of acknowledgment

I just have a little rant sorry. Last night I was playing overwatch, completely dominating the game. I play support, mainly bap, mercy and lucio. In these games, I’d do such amazing heals that I’d end the game with 0 deaths. My heals to death ratio would be so good! I’m talking like 0-3 deaths with 15,000+ heals. And I see that no matter what, it’s just never recognized. I don’t play very many games so I don’t know if the game concept is similar to other games. But when a dps does good, it’s extremely obvious. They’ll get like 5 kills in a row with a kill feed showing the kills one after the other AND if it’s the best play, it’ll be shown again at the end of the game in the play of the game. Tanks are similar. If a tank does well, it’s obvious. They could get play of the game. With healers, it’s harder to get play of the game. If your stats are incredible, chances are you’re competing with great stats from dps and tanks as well and they’re more likely to get play of the game. So we’re grouping up, going in together, heals are great, long fights, we barely die and even with no exceptional play from dps or tanks, heals are never acknowledged. I could play several games where dps and tanks play bare minimum, maybe 3 kills max with somewhat good stats, but we never die and someone will say something like “good job junkrat”. Or my favourite! When I call out something wrong and suddenly I’m the problem and I’m bad. Guys??? I have 1 death with 12,000 heals. We are steamrolling them. You guys are never dying and you’re mad because I’m asking you to play with the team. This one game in particular made me so mad! Arrogantly I had said something in voice along the lines of “i think the heals are fantastic”. (hey if no one will acknowledge you, sometimes you gotta acknowledge yourself). And the tank goes “ya great job dps”. What??????

I'm applying for a job and the last box on the application says "application acknowledgment" and its required to finish. Ive never seen that before. What are they asking for?

Edit: "applicant acknowledgment"

Cheesy to include “Acknowledgments/Dedication” page in settings to thank family members, this subreddit, and beta testers?

I’m creating an app that I hope will eventually be in the App Store. I owe any success it may have to my wife who provides tons of feedback, my family who have supported me, and beta testers who have provided such helpful feedback.

Is it too cheesy to have a page in the settings dedicated to them? I do want to show appreciation but I can see that anyone who is not my family may see a dedication page like that and roll their eyes or think that I’m full of myself to think my app is SO great that it’s worthy of including a dedication page. Has anyone ever even done this before in an app?

What do you all think?

Some acknowledgment can go a long way. I stood up for myself at work. Exercised as all my joints popped and creaked; down 0.2% body fat over the week. Made an amazing steak. Cleaned under my desk.

Ariel Helwani on Twitter: UFC has yet to officially announce/acknowledge the Waterson-Rodriguez headliner this w/e. Issue isn’t Waterson. She signed, I’m told. It’s more of logistical issue w/ Rodriguez. Not injury/Covid related. They are hopeful it works out ASAP but that’s why no acknowledgment. twitter.com/arielhelwani/…

Vent: lack of acknowledgment

The other day NK’s teacher sent out an end of the quarter email thanking everyone for their support while navigating online/Zoom school. They thanked everyone EXCEPT the babysitters/nannies and it made me so angry. I’ve been managing NK’s schooling for almost a year. It just really bothered me that we were forgotten about.
