A short overview of the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award pt. 2 (1970-1981)

As the shortlists get longer there's more to write, so what I planned as a 3 part breezy thing might end up being 5 parts. Apologies! Here is part one if you didn't see it. Just looking for general responses - if you disagree, great! If you've seen other films from the years then tell me about them! If you think something else should have been nominated, let us hear about it! Anything.

1970
WINNER: Italy (5th) – Elio Petri – Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion
ELSEWHERE: Out of the nominated crowd that I’ve seen, this is a solid winner about the police being a natural home for festering bum boils. I might have gone for the French-Vietnamese Hoa Binh by Raoul Coutard, which is quite a radical choice if you think politically. He shot last year’s winner and he brings that energy to a different front of the international class struggle. Roy Andersson’s debut and Luis Bunuel’s umpteenth film are on the longlist, but I haven’t seen either! France had an embarrassment of riches this year: Cercle Rouge, Claire’s Knee, Donkey Skin.

1971
WINNER: Italy (6th) – Vittorio de Sica – The Garden of the Finzi-Continis
ELSEWHERE: Not seen the winner. Post Bicycle Thieves de Sicas have disappointed me, but this one looks like it could be something more. Anyone seen it? Elsewhere Kurosawa gets a nod for his colour debut and relative flop Dodeskaden, about a community of people who live on a dump. I’m fond of it but it isn’t anywhere near his best. Clearly Jodorowsky’s El Topo was a bit too weird for the Academy though the Mexicans put it forward.. The Soviets interest me here with their third consecutive film based around a true great of their culture. We had adaptations of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky: now it’s a biopic of Tchaikovsky. I guess this was some self-celebration/soft power thing under Brezhnev.

1972
WINNER: France (5th) – Luis Bunuel – The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoise
ELSEWHERE: Bunuel gets some French cash and makes his best film for a decade. Other than that I have seen (and heard of) precisely one other film from the 22 strong list: Roma by Oscar magnet Fellini. Not a fan. It might be interesting to check what else came out around this time that national boards didn’t submit: Solaris, Agurre Wrath of God, Cries and Whispers, The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, Love in the Afternoon, Red Psalm.

1973
WINNER: France (6th)

A short overview of the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award (1956-1969)

I suppose the Best Foreign Language Oscar is emblematic of the problem at large with the Oscars: its kind of reductionist and silly and how can we separate films because of 'foreignness' - but also we realise a reductive film discussion is better than none, and there are some serious films that get put into the mix every single year without fail.

The ceremonies from 1970 to the present day will come in later editions, but I wanted to make a series of posts that cover the films that won the Best Foreign Language / International Film Oscar, but mostly to look at the films that were nominated and the films that were submitted by their national boards but didn't get shortlisted. In some instances, I think it is good to mention things that were ignored by their own country.

I'm more of a 70s/80s film fan so I'll have seen much more widely in coming editions. However, if you've seen any of the films from the list of annual submissions, please comment below. (The year-by-year is in the box at the bottom here).

1956
WINNER: Italy - Federico Fellini, La Strada
ELSEWHERE: I’m afraid I don’t know any of the other films and only that the West German nominee Herman Kautner was certainly an approved director in Germany in the early β€˜40s…say no more. Not a huge fan of La Strada either.

1957
WINNER: Italy (2nd) - Federico Fellini, Nights of Cabiria
ELSEWHERE: Most people will zero in on the Swedish entry – The Seventh Seal – which wasn’t even shortlisted. I have to say I prefer it to anything by Fellini. That said I’d like to draw attention the West German nominee Robert Siodmak. The Devil Strikes at Night is about the serial killer Bruno Ludke and it is okay – truth is Siodmak was probably well past his best, but fairly known by the Academy for his very good 40s noirs The Killers and Cry of the City.

1958
WINNER: France – Jacques Tati, Mon Oncle
ELSEWHERE: Another Bergman film not even getting shortlisted – I think I prefer The Face to The Seventh Seal. The Japanese entry – The Ballad of Naruyama – doesn’t get enough love either. That said am not going to argue with Mon Oncle winning, although maybe if Poland had got their shit together to nominate Ashes and Diamonds I’d say there was an issue here.

1959
WINNER: France (2nd) – Marcel Camus, Black Orpheus
ELSEWHERE: A very good winner with some incredibly ric
