[Breeds] 1st (ish) time owner, looking at two breeds - Pembroke Welsh Corgi or Whippet

Introduction

  1. Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?
  • I’ve lived with my wifeβ€˜s family dog. I’ve spent plenty of time with her and have taken care of her when they were out of town and have taken care of friends/family dogs as well. My wife (who will be also the co-owner of the dog) has plenty of experience with her own family pets, volunteer work through local animal shelters and working at doggy day care.
  1. Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?
  • We will be going through a reputable breeder. I’m already contacting local breeders.
  1. Describe your ideal dog.
  • We’re looking for a pup (small to medium) that can snuggle while I watch a laker game as well as the typical tug o war and fetch, but can be our weekend warrior active buddy when we go on hikes, the beach, etc (I’m imagining a post Covid world where some semblance of normalcy is restored)

Wife and I would love to bring our pup out (again post Covid imagination) to dog parks and dog friendly places, so we’d love a dog that is sociable and comfortable with other pups.

  1. What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?
  • We have narrowed it down to a Whippet or a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

We also were on the goldendoodle craze train, but I immediately hopped off after seeing so many horror stories on this sub.

  1. What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?
  • Basic commands like sit, stay, lay down, leave it, wait for food, etc. We’re mainly looking at commands that have to do with obedience.
  1. Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport?
  • We’re just looking for a companion.

Care Commitments

  1. How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?
  • as long as we need! Outside of work, my wife and I have a pretty clear schedule.
  1. How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?
  • during the typical work week I can devote 1-2 hours (am/pm) and my wife can squeeze in time around lunch time since she works from home. That’s on the

Because the origin is Welsh, the plural of "corgi" is actually "corgwn" which is pronounced "CORGOON". (Tons of pics and sources in the comments!)

TL;DR: It's all in the title, but this post has adorable pictures of corgwn and tons of sources. I put a lot of work into this one, so if you're into it (and will put up with my terrible humour) then read on!

This is my first post to /r/etymology so I hope I've done right by your sub. Cheers!

Well folks this might be my strangest ^(and ^longest) awwducational-slash-etymology-related post yet; it's one third aww (awwviously corgwn -remember, corGOON- are cute as heck!), one third history, and one third language/etymology facts! Hope there's something for everyone ^I ^spent ^a ^long ^time ^researching ^it ^:D

I will say that I sometimes forget not everyone has tinkered with their web browser like I have; if you don’t already have the Chrome extension that lets you mouse-over image links for a pop-up view, I cannot recommend it enough; you can just get a little visual to go with things a lot of the time instead of having to click and leave a page. Makes redditing on desktop much nicer. And a lot of my linked text is actually just a picture soooo-

Like this: Corgwn!!

Onwards! I figure if we can all switch over from calling Phở "foe" to calling it by the proper "fuh", surely we can get the plural of corgi to be as it should!

So WHY it is that we don't use the proper word for a pile of corgwn? ^^^Source.

Culture erasure. In a single sentence: the English have historically been prejudiced against the Welsh language, and they have tried to suppress the use of the Welsh language. ^^^Source ^^^2. That erasure still echos into our time, in language remnants like this corgis/corgwn thing; let's do our part to update our language. Corgoooooon!!

I initially learned about this from an episode from the podcast "No Such Thing as a Fish", where the final fact in that episode is that:

Blue Welsh Pembroke Corgi

Hi everyone, I've been in recent contact with a Pembroke breeder who has told me that they frequently have blue and white (not Merle) puppies come through in their litters. I'm not planning on breeding or showing, but want to make sure any dog I adopt is healthy and not prone to health problems. Does anyone know if this is a red flag regarding the breeder's puppies or if it's a normal occurrence/not something to worry about? Thanks in advance!
