Pretty much the title. My playgroup is getting into pauper and an LGS near us has a large pauper scene (Or had, pre-pandemic. We expect it to come back when more of paper magic does).
Hello all! This brew is hurting my brain and I need your help. I am new to Tortured Existence but I enjoy the concept and thus I decided to go against the grain and make a Rakdos brew instead of Golgari. The point of the deck is to ramp with [[Bog Witch]] and [[Soldevi Adnate]] and play relatively expensive cards early by abusing their madness costs + ramp. At times I am not sure whether I suck at playing TortEx or the deck is inconsistent so I wanted some insight from you guys.
Here is the list and a deckstats link - https://deckstats.net/decks/167639/1865715-rakdos-ramp-tortex

Ok so when I found out that if you shot the memorial private Kowalski would chase after you, after finding this out I proceeded to abuse the Chasing thing and proceeded to run all the way to the free side north gate, I went to the crimson caravan place and went though the other door, I saw him, then he disappeared from the game, when I went on another new save that I’d just started on, I went to Boulder City
He wasn’t there
Guys I think I tortured him out of existence

Strong tech with [[Syr Konrad]] and [[Tormod the Desecrator]], this seems like a hidden gem. Thoughts?

First off, I take no credit for this monstrosity. I just googled a ton of different lists and mashed them together.
I like the Tortex archetype and figured the Cat/Cow variant would be fun, but I thought the mardu versions of the deck were missing out on too much from green. I also thought a lot of two color versions were desperately missing what a third color would offer, and I like Jund for all the flexibility in the colorless/flexible cycling costs as well as Faithless Looting. I also read that this archetype typically gets super hosed by Tron and that Cat/Drannith Stinger type effects are good to get by Stonehorn Dignitary.
Posting here because I'm still new to the format and have only played Reality Acid decks so far. The mana base for this pile probably needs work but I think the concept has some legs.
Thoughts? Ideas? Concerns?

From 12 am to 1 am last night, I was captivated by a single idea. As a Tortured Existence player (Tort Ex for short), how can I use [[Cauldron Familiar]], a card now legal to pauper via jumpstart, to create an even better Tort Ex deck? I present to you, after hours of testing and writing this primer:

Im surprised that its just kinda Disappeared in the last 2 years
I'm coming back to pauper after the bannings. I used to looooooove playing UG turbo fog (I'm evil, I know) before the format was severely affected by WOTCs bullshit recent design mistakes.
I always wanted to build Tortured Existence but don't see it really putting any numbers up. I was thinking about keeping it BG or maybe Jund for [[Faithless Looting]] and [[Thrill of Possibilities]].
Is it still worth building or will I be eaten alive by Tron and blink decks?
Im looking for a deck that plays like birthing pod*, or tortured existence in pauper. Basically just using an engine to run through the deck for any creaturw the situation needs, or a combo finish. Is there anything like thay around? *ive never played modern pod, but ive played the card in edh, and i play vannifar in standard.

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has considered using tortured existence to work with the new mutate creatures added with Ikoria? You get some uncounterable creatures, plus some decent effects if they resolve.
I know that this has been asked tons of times but I'm lazy and i'd like to know a good starting list of a GB Tortured Existence deck that can be played in the current meta.
Thanks in advance to everyone.
Sorry for my bad english. <3<3
Many people may have not even heard of [[Tortured Existence]], and it's not hard to see why. Originally printed in 1998, the card hasn't been reprinted in 22 years, and hasn't seen competitive play outside of a fringe pauper deck since. But don't let the lack of hype for the card fool you - Tortured Existence is a good card, and one that can be very fun to play.
Tortured Existence is a cheap enchantment that lets you pay B and discard a creature card to return any creature card from your graveyard to your hand. In effect, this means the card's baseline is turning every creature you draw into the best creature you've cast so far, so long as you can pay the activation costs. Drawn a one or two drop that isn't relevant anymore? Ditch it for your five drop and keep up the pressure.
And that's just the baseline. The card also has a lot of small synergies that are available in most cubes. Cr... keep reading on reddit ➡

Finally made my first foray into Pauper and bought a Golgari Tortured Existence deck.
I have little to no idea how it will perform in the current meta (as I literally have no idea what the meta is) but I am pretty happy!
With the spoilers of MH1 it seems that a card went almost unnoticed, [[Viashino Sandsprinter]] is a common creature with 4 abilities! That gotta be decent right?
Besides the fact that sand is coarse and rough and irritating, I've come up with a deck idea for this card. The idea is not really new, but the way we'd pilot a [[Tortured Existence]] deck would be slightly different! Because Viashino have the option to either be a hasty trampler beat stick or a cycling card I think this could be a fine starting point to the archetype.
The concept would be to play a value game, where we try to reduce our opponents resources and increase ours in the process, having Viashino as the finisher in the form of a recurrable and repeatable Ball of Lightning. With the usual cards like [[Golgari Browscale]], [[Grave Scrabbler]] and [[Crypt Rats]], but instead of using Horror of the Broken Lands or Angler we would look at a more "control" plan using [[Blightning]] an... keep reading on reddit ➡
This is a cycling deck I've brewed with the main win condition being crypt rats and songs of the damned. I've made B/G, B/R and U/B variations of this deck and this one works the best. Just the combination of the great blue cyclers with ponder and especially the dizzy spell and merchant scroll to get tortured existence and songs out consistently when I need them, it has alot more control over the other versions of what cards your getting and what cards your dumping. And if the crypt rats combo fails winning by repetadly bringing back crusher and striped riverwinder and even giving them flying by cycling windcaller aven even works beautifully. Splashing the green for nothing but the gnaw to the bone is 100% worth it and is what makes the strategy of just recasting crusher and riverwinder viable. Any thoughts? https://www.topdecked.me/decks/61de8e46-ceb9-403c-9d19-6ccaabb323d0
I've kept my eye on Pauper for a while, and have a bit of a battle-box set up to play with friends. I'm looking through how I'm going to change the decks up after the bannings and am curious about this deck. Can anyone explain why this deck just doesn't put up any numbers at all, until the biggest possible tournaments? One did well in the first Pauper Open at the SCG Invitational a while ago, and then another in the first Pauper MCQ, but doesn't seem to ever show up in 5-0 dumps, or other lower competitive levels. Is it just a silver-bullet deck that can only be played into a more predictable and inbred "pro" meta? Can you explain the variants to me? I've heard the name Dead Dog thrown around, in reference to Mongrel/Vampire Hound styles, but it seems difficult to really collect a lot of info about this deck since all the data is scattered and inconsistent. What other variants exist? Thanks!
If not, could someone link me a few standard deck lists? Thanks!
Hey guys, I'd like to know which Tortured Existence list you think is the best for the current Pauper's meta.
I'm currently playing the classic GB tortured.
So, my gf is a beginner in MTG and she wants me to build a black deck with zombies, sacrifices or graveyard interaction in order to compete in the local game store with me.
I’m not quite sure what to go for because the Golgari cleary shows better results overall in what a saw in videos and mtggoldfish tournament trackers and Tortured existence seems really strong and versatile but a lot harder to play(what can ruin the experience for her).
She is willing to study videos about the deck and playtest with me a couple of times before engaging in her first tournament.
The game shop metagame is mainly composed of Burn, Boros(kuldotha and monarch), affinity, elves, tron, ubdelver(me) and a couple of homebrew decks. The player poll is often composed of 10-15 players. I appreciate any tips!! From what deck to choose to side board or anything else you guys are able to say!!
Sorry for my english, it is not my main language. Thx for your time!!
I’m considering building TortEx, because I’m a huge fan of one-off decks that get to toolbox. Does anyone have experience with it? I understand it take a while to win—is there a way to circumvent that, or is that what you’re getting yourself into? I’m fine with that, I’m just unaware of what the deck’s options are.
Where can I find a primer and an updated deck list?
Has anyone tried [[Rhizome Lurcher] ] in Tortured Existence?
Undergrowth-Enters the battlefield with a number of +1/+1 counters equal to the amount of creatures in your graveyard.
I think the comparison is Gurmag Angler. It's hard to pass up a 15/15 or more.
EDIT: Thanks for all the advice, I'm new to pauper and very new to the deck.
I’m working on a list myself, and I see why it would be good to add red for the card draw/cheaper removal, and white to get back enchantments/ protection, but is it worth it to add the extra color or just leave it Black/Green?
