TIL in 1998, a 10-year-old girl in Austria was dragged into a car and kidnapped. The case remained unsolved until she knocked on someone's door in 2006 saying: "I am Natascha Kampusch." She had just escaped the secret cellar of a local technician that abused her for 8 years.

[WP] A technician pulls a headset off of you and asks you if you liked the VR. You panic, and he calmly says that your whole life was a 2 minute VR experience to show you what being an average person would be like. You, stunned and afraid, ask, "Who am I, then?" He stares in complete disbelief.

Inspiration: $45k to $121k in 4 years (Technician to Engineer, boomerang hire)
Just wanted to give people some inspiration. Between 2015 and 2019, I did the following:
- Hired as a technician at $45k/yr
- Worked a few years in that role
- Left for a totally different role at a different company
- Came back to the first company as an engineer at $110k/yr w/ $11k annual bonus and $4k signing bonus
How:
- Made a good impression as a technician, worked my tickets really well, good at customer service, helped my coworkers, studied a lot and earned a few certificates
- Left on good terms!
- Lots of homelabbing (shout out to /r/homelab) - diving in, spending a ton of personal time learning
- Negotiation!
Trying to be somewhat vague to remain anonymous, but my new role involves cloud engineering, infrastructure as code (IaC), and coming up with creative solutions to process data. My technician role involved troubleshooting networking equipment for customers.

I apologize for the crappy editing. New to GIMP...image manipulation is not my strong suite. If anyone knows of an easy way to obfuscate and highlight (the way I can with Greenshot or ShareX editors in Windows) in Gimp or another Linux app (I'm a recent convertee and chose Manjaro), I'm all ears!

most technical thing a helpdesk technician should know
I am an L2 helpdesk technician, about 5 years experience.
I recently had a job interview and the interviewer completely flummoxed me by asking what the most technical thing I know is. I was stuck, as I realised that the best IT skills I have (mainly some decent knowledge of M365 stuff + some Windows server stuff) was not going to get me very far.
So I'm interested. L2 techs, what is the most technical thing you know?
And for everyone else, what do you think is a realistic skill for a L2 that would be complex, and make you stand out?

I'm an air quality scientist / field technician with a BS in Physics, getting an MS in MechEβ how can I better steer my career into an engineering discipline?
I need a little bit of advice regarding the question in the title, but here's the context: I have a BS in Physics and have been working for nearly two years now at a small environmental technology company as an analyst / field engineer / technician. We make and implement optical sensing analyzers to measure air quality. My job is a little hard to explain since it's a bit multi-faceted, but I'm looking to pivot my career towards something more focused in engineering. Recently I started an MS in Mechanical Engineering part time. The program is online, but nothing about the degree indicates it was once I finish it down the road. I am self-funded, I receive no assistance from my employer.
I'm interested in a number of different fields (power generation and distribution, renewable energy, automotive industry, etc.) but I'm worried about my chances of switching into an engineering role, since I've had no luck applying to jobs and am now having doubts about what will happen after I finish my degree. Do engineering employers take people with tangential experience for entry level roles? Have I made a mistake starting an MS in something I don't have a great deal of previous experience in?
Any advice or anecdotes would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
EDIT: Really surprised by the support this post is gettingβ I really really appreciate all the comments, thanks again!

I have been working as a NG technician for 7 months and just realized I am a walking stereotype.
I am literally a stereotypical national guard guy, what the fuck. I bought handguns, cigars and a motorcycle, I go to the gym every day and never make any progress, and I go to sleep at like 9pm every night. I drive a 2015 toyata tundra. Me and my coworkers all have a clingy, slightly insecure, slightly funny looking girlfriend. One time my girlfriend and my battle buddy's girlfriend picked us up on the same day and they were like carbon copies. Fucking scary.
Now I just need to fall off my motorcycle and get fat, then I will have achieved full NG wizard status.
