CMV: Parents should not be able to opt out of their child getting sex education at school.

I've heard many parents say that they should be able to choose if their child receives sex education in school and in some areas they can opt out. I think it is irresponsible of parents to shelter their child because if they don't receive proper information on contraception, consent, STDs, etc., their child is being put at risk. These parents are likely uncomfortable with the topic and are in denial about their child growing up, but avoiding the topic does not prevent them from being sexually active. Curriculum is developed by researchers, experts in the field, and teachers, and should be seen as more valuable than than a parent's opinion. The amount of misinformation that some adults have about sex is astounding. Also it's very sad when children hit puberty and feel scared or think that something is wrong with them because they didn't expect it.

Edit: As people have pointed out, there is a lot of variation in the quality of sex education depending on where you live. My point is for sex ed curriculums that are research based and regularly reviewed and updated by a team of researchers/teachers/etc. I can completely understand being uncomfortable with your child receiving outdated or politcally/religiously driven curriculum.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I'll try to respond to everyone that has new ideas and award delta as applicable.

UPDATE ON MY VIEW:

I mainly stand with what I said but I think there should be some exceptions when opting out is acceptable. Many of you describe sex ed being inaccurate, sexist, etc., and I'm sorry you had those experiences. I believe that sex ed should be as value-free as possible and focus on the best current body of scientific research. Parents can choose to teach other beliefs outside of school but at least their children will have knowledge about puberty, contraception, consent, etc. if they don't learn that at home. However, based on listening to your stories, I believe that children should automatically get sex ed (like all other subjects) unless their parents choose to opt out under these conditions:

  1. The parents have researched the sex ed curriculum in the area and spoken with the teacher who would deliver it and they still have concerns about a lack of scientific basis of the instruction. Let's keep in mind that sex ed varies by area and over time, so one bad experience does not mean the whole subject is messed up. The parents should be responsible for teaching sex ed and the child can show proof of bo

Sex Education 101 for Indians

Hey!

Sex and Sexual Education barely/never gets talked about in India. I'm a 26F who's been sexually active since the last 5 years. Whatever I've learned, has been from girl-friends, experience, porn (SEX IS 294739% DIFFERENT FROM PORN) and erotica novels

There are SO so many things I wish I knew before.....or wish I didn't have to learn from experience. Hence I've made this post for all my fellow women, men, and everyone in between.

This post is written from a woman's POV but I strongly advice everyone to read it regardless of gender and orientation.

Trigger warning - There are mentions of Sexual and mental trauma in this post. But specific points regarding them have NOT been mentioned and I hope to make a specific post about that one day Child and Sexual abuse COMPLETELY change a person's perspective of sex and it has to be dealt with appropriately. If you have been abused in any way, there are chances that it has changed/affected you and you don't even know.

Terminology -

Skinship - Any kind of sexual touching

Kissing - Lip to lip kissing

1st base - Boob/butt groping

2nd base - Groin groping

3rd base - Oral

Home run - Sex

Chapter 1 - When is the right time to start having sex

When you FEEL like it and when you are 100% sure.

The first time I had sex, it was crap. I wasn't sure if I wanted to have sex. I was confused about whether I was ready for the act, whether he was the one, whether I'd regret it later. (I went back to the hostel and cried)

And guess what? If you're having these kind of thoughts or doubts YOU ARE PROBABLY NOT READY.

Being nervous is normal. But being unsure or hesitant usually means you need more time.

Sex is as mental as physical (especially for women), what I mean by this is to PHYSICALLY enjoy sex, you need to be turned on MENTALLY.

If you are worried/not sure/not turned on, its not going to be as fun as its supposed to.

The above applies to all kinds of skinship.

Do it if you are ready and want to do it with the person. (both equally important)

Age usually doesn't matter BUT I strongly advice you to be older than 18 (no less than 16 please) because being sexually active does open up the chances of trauma and I would never wish my 16/17 year old self to experience the same things I did at 21+ (actually I wouldn't want ANYONE and ANY AGE to get trauma but as an older person I was better equipped to handle something like that)

My first relationship was in 10th sta

Sex Education should be provided to students in egyptian schools(student of an appropriate age)

Before you rage all over the post and start down voting please read this and assess my argument thoroughly.... First of all sex ed is not about showing children porn in school as some egyptians think ,it's about teaching them about the human anatomy for both genders and that consent and protection are vital before engaging in sexual intercorse (after getting married of course!) ....if provided in a controlled manner and a "clean" atmosphere children are going to learn to respect women and not to objectify them, as they would learn that a womans body is very complex and versatile even more than a males body ( because they are able to give birth obviously) which to an extent will change their views of women in our society and may get children to respect women more and potentially decrease sexual harassment incidents!! All of this is theoretical of course because i believe even if sex ed was to be taught to children, the unprofessionalism and untrustworthiness of people who are going to provide it ( presumably teachers) will drastically affect its outcomes. For example if a teacher is to be unprofessional in delivering the information it could very much cause the absolute opposite of results which could be catastrophic. Therefore my point being that sex ed is good from an intellectual and practical point of view ( not religious, i am not a man of god/priest/sheikh to comment on the matter from a religious point of view) if provided in a controlled, professional manner

Infidelity and Sex Education

Just reflecting tonight on some posts where the theme of how little people seem to be aware of the utter devastation and trauma cheating causes. Iโ€™m actually thinking of post from betrayers who admittedly knew they were doing wrong, but until they saw the impact on their betrayeds did not really understand the complete and utter destruction of a personality betrayal can cause.

Believe it or not, Iโ€™m going somewhere with this โ€” in my last IC with my trauma therapist I mentioned to her that I thought the impact of infidelity needed to be part of the standard sex education curriculum. It seems like an important dimension of sexual behavior that would be worth spreading awareness of.

I know some betrayers donโ€™t give a crap, and others might actually revel in the consequences of their actions, but I really do think there are a lot of people who have developed an โ€œitโ€™s not a big dealโ€ attitude from a wide variety of source, and that feeds into the whole set of rationalizations betrayers have.

Maybe a little time spent in sex education telling the truth would have some impact here and there.

I have to say my therapist reacted really strongly to this idea โ€” it was clear she had a kind of โ€œwhy hasnโ€™t anybody thought of thisโ€ moment. She really loved it.

I have no idea how to try to push for something like this. But I may take it on as a pet project in my retirement.

In the meantime, Iโ€™m curious what people on here think of the idea.

So โ€” throwing the idea out there for discussion and feedback.

UPDATE: there is an important angle to this that I neglected in original post. In many ways I think the most important audience for this education is future betrayeds more than future betrayers. None of us betrayeds were prepared for what happened to us. And I think a lot of us questioned ourselves. Just simply a message like โ€œat least half of you in this classroom will be cheated on in a future relationshipโ€œ. (Donโ€™t know if thatโ€™s the number but sounds close, if you donโ€™t limit to marriage and include any long term relationship.). โ€Hereโ€™s a preview of what you will likely go through and some resources you may be able to use to help you cope.โ€

Also โ€” I by no means consider this a vaccine against infidelity or anything of the like. Just a start at raising awareness of how serious infidelity really is.

They shouldnโ€™t have to be itโ€™s normal. Why is condoms such a taboo also. You see poor families and guess how many kids they would have 5-7 or even more. My dad has helped a mom who had 6 daughters but 3 got killed by their own dad because heโ€™s a rickshaw driver who was tired of spending money for their school and then stressed about the amount he would have to spend on dowry. I wondered how it would of been different if he knew about sex education. Another guy he was poor couldnโ€™t pay for medical bills my dad helped he lived but what if my dad didnโ€™t he would of left behind 7 kids and a wife. I wonder how many kids are getting molested but donโ€™t know whatโ€™s happening to them because they havenโ€™t been taught whatโ€™s right and wrong. Poor people need to be taught about sex and contraceptives. Boys needs to be taught about sex and not go on porn websites because thatโ€™s the last place to learn about it and you guys wonder how Mia khalifa got popular. Girls needs to taught about their periods and how to say no and not be forced to do anything because we all know men like to push.

Sex education and trying to conceive

What kind of sex education did you receive?

How did it shape your expectations on how hard getting pregnant would be?

What, if anything, would your ideal sex education program cover about trying to conceive?

Do you think it's a problem that sex education programs often focus on avoiding conception and never mention what it's like when you're actively trying to conceive? Or is that appropriate because of the age groups typically receiving sex education?

The lack of sex education for Daphne and the other girls...

So, I get that Daphne etc, just like many other girls of the supper classes, knew nothing about sex and babymaking but I have questions and these things are really bugging me.

  1. How were periods explained to these girls?

  2. How did they understand marriage to be the only way to babies?

  3. What did they think rakes did to make them look down on them so much? Daphne in particular was shown a number of times to be judgemental of the 'rakish' behaviour she believed her brother and Simon to engage in.

  4. Before understanding that sex created babies, Daphne thought that Simon had a physical impediment to having a child so what did she/they understand about how babies were made?

  5. Did none of them ever have any sexual urges? We have them from early ages so did none of these girls ever speak of anything to anyone? Ever wonder about all the feelings they got in their nether regions? Was Simon telling Daphne about masturbation the first time she had ever considered exploring her own body?

  6. After her masturbation lesson and successful (!!!) practice, did Daphne not wonder about what would happen 'between her legs' when there was a man involved?

There were other things that I keep thinking when I watch the show, but these are the main ones that make me think they must have at least had questions about things, and as Daphne seems to have a fairly good relationship with her ladies maid would it not have been something that she at least tried to ask her about at some point? What explanations do you guys have?

Also, considering Daphne's strong response to her mum about her lack of preparation, someone please tell me that she takes it upon herself to give her sisters (and Penelope perhaps) at the very least basic knowledge so they had some inkling of before they got married!

AITA for lying to my sister about sex education?

I know the title sounds bad, but just hear me out.

To give some backstory, I am nineteen and my little sister is going to turn eight in a month. My mother's a single parent and not the most present mother figure (working multiple jobs to provide for us). So, I've always felt like my little sister was my "baby."

Either way, a few days ago my little sister approached me and asked me how babies were made. I told her to go ask our mother. She responded by telling me that she had already asked our mother, and our mother had told her to go ask me.

Now, in my house "sex" is a very taboo topic. I didn't know about sex until I was thirteen in seventh-grade science class, and my mother never bothered to give me "the talk." I'm not sure when kids are supposed to learn about this, but I don't think that seven is an appropriate age.

Now, I didn't want to tell her the classic "I'll tell you when you're older." Because, from experience, saying that to a kid only fuels their curiosity. And now, with the internet at her fingertips, I didn't want her searching anything up that may yield some NSFW results.

So what did I do? I panicked and made up some ridiculous story about how a man and a woman "exchanging cells via saliva" to produce a child. I am so surprised my sister believed me, that's how stupid my story was.

At the time, I thought I did the right thing. I mean my little sister is only seven, and she's so innocent and pure and I really want her to keep this child-like innocence for as long as possible.

But now that I think back on it, I feel unsure if I went about it in the right way. If someone ever touches her inappropriately (God forbid!) I want her to understand that it's wrong and she needs to come forward and tell me or Mom. Also, I don't want her to have misconceptions about sex that'll linger when she's older.

At the same time, though, it physically pains me to think about me explaining such an uncomfortable subject to my very innocent seven-year-old sister.

I just really need to know if I was in the wrong, and how I should go about remedying the situation if I was.
