No kid of mine is quitting the team, I think as I meld the bloody fabric onto my crying son’s hand.
While cleaning I (30f) was brushing my hand down the couch cushion when a sewing needle that was hiding there went into my pinkie. It stung and was bleeding, but after a few seconds I was hit with the worst pain of my entire life. It was electric through my hand into my elbow and shoulder. The pain came in waves like contractions, and I was screaming on the bathroom floor sobbing. I was dry heaving the pain was so intense. After a while the pain faded into a more dull and expected pain, but my pinkie keeps getting darker and darker as it appears a bruise is spreading deep below my skin. I checked the needle and nothing seems to be broken off under my skin. Is there any worry that I did any significant damage? This may seem silly but the bruise keeps spreading and the pain up through my shoulder hasn’t completely left yet. I typically have a very high pain tolerance so the intensity of this pain has shaken me up a bit. Anything helps.
This happened a couple years ago. I was moving items from my junk drawer that is located next to the sink in the kitchen to another drawer further away from the sink to create a new junk drawer. Among those items of junk was my gf’s sewing needle holder.
The needle holder has a variety of sizes of needles and as I was moving it I saw one drop. I put the items in my hands down on the counter and looked for the needle, after about 20 minutes of search, I was unable to locate it. I was thinking “I should probably continue to look for it later on.” I did not continue the search, because I forgot.
Fast forward two months later. I go home each day for lunch and after I am done eating I give my areas a courtesy wipe. My dishwasher had some dirty dishes in it. I figured, “hey I have some time, might as well rinse these dishes, and put them in the dishwasher.” My kitchen sink is setup a little unusual sink setup . As I was wiping down around the sinks and that little counter spot, I felt something go in to my hand. It didn’t hurt but, it felt weird. Well I couldn’t move my hand, as if it was paralyzed. I started to panic, but I calmed myself down. And I was like well I need to go to the hospital. I call my boss. I said, “ I am not coming back to work. There is something in my hand and I can not move it. Once I find out what’s going on. I will let you know”
Go to the ER, and got an X-ray. I found the needle. It was lodged inside my hand. After minutes of digging in my hand to even grasp the needle with forceps. They had to cut an exit cut to push it out. Once it was removed, I was able to move my hand with ease. It was such a relief.
When I got home, I went back to the scene of the crime and I saw something poking out of the lip of the sink and counter top. It was part of the needle The needle actually broke off inside my hand. Moral of story. Find the dropped needle.
TLDR: Dropped a sewing needle, didn’t find it. While cleaning my counter and sink and I found it when it lodged in my hand, two months later.
Edit 2: link correction
I'm looking for recommendations for general purpose hypoallergenic hand sewing needles, as I'm allergic to nickel. I'm having some difficulty finding what I'm looking for, as I'm not super familiar with sewing terminology.
I work mostly with cotton, but I sometimes also work with flannel and fleece. The needles I've liked so far are around 50 mm so I'd love to find something at that length. Also, I don't need an extra large eye (practically everything I've seen so far comes with it).
I would appreciate any help you can give. Thanks!
