Cast MIL- mother in law
Karen- mean lady who I'm unsure if she's really named Karen but she looks like one.
Secretary- really nice lady who really does work there
So I was into physio before covid and I had to have my MIL drive me, but we also had to bring my son(2). I was in for my appointment and MIL was watching my son in the waitingroom.
My son was wondering around and got behind the counter. MIL went after him to get him to play where he's suppose to.
A lady (who we will call Karen) walks in and say "excuse me, I need to book an appointment." Right as my mother in law stood up. The lady then saw the kid.
Karen- "Why the hell would you bring a baby to work?"
MIL- "I don't work here."
Karen- "Don't lie to me. Your the only one out here."
MIL- "The secretary just stepped out for a minute. I'm sure she'll be right back."
Karen- "then why the hell are you behind the counter?"
MIL- because my grandson ran back here. He's only two and doesn't know better just yet. Sorry."
Karen- "whatever, just get behind the computer and book me an appointment before I have you fired"
At that point the actual secretary walked into the room.
Secretary- "sorry for taking so long back there."
Karen- "it's about time you came. Fire her." She points at MIL.
secretary- looking really confused. "She doesn't work here, she's just waiting for her daughter to finish her appointment. But I am back now and am able to help with whatever you need."
Karen- with a nasty look on her face. "Yeah, fine, whatever. I need to book an appointment."
So they booked her appointment and she left. My little man apparently ran behind the counter again and the secretary said. "My, arnt you the cutest worker we have here."
I finished my appointment and on the way home MIL told me this story and asked me to post it for her. So I did.
A LOT of different cognitive steps and abilities are utilized in even the simplest things neurotypicals don’t ever need to think about, like just making a phone call.
You don’t have to think about choosing (prioritizing that task), task switching, focusing enough to carry it through, processing information as the task is being carried out, regulating your attention as it happens, accessing required memories, and managing your anxiety/confusion/stress/etc all at once.
But some of us DO need to think about all of that, and not only think about it but to try and get it all to work together as one smooth machine.
It is HARD.
I like to say, imagine how difficult eating would be if you have to consciously manage your chewing, saliva production, peristalsis, stomach contractions, nutrient absorption, and water regulation. Instead of an unconscious thing now you have to try and juggle all these different tiny components that all depend on each other.
It is infuriating when people just say “why can’t you just do it? It’s right there!” I’m trying! But everything you don’t have to think about, I do. And it’s exhausting.
Think this one is from the year 2k, back when most of the copiers we serviced were still analog and had actual buttons for all the different features.
We got a call from a church saying that the copier was malfunctioning when they tried to use it. It would duplex copies or zoom when none of that was selected, other random stuff as well. When dispatched to a call our standard troubleshooting procedure was to ask the person who had the issue exactly what happened when they used the machine and then try to get the same error/issue and go from there.
When I arrived at the church only the pastor was there and he told me the secretary was the one having issues, he explained basically the same thing from the call. Random things were happening when the secretary used the copier, he had not had any issues.
I give the copier a once over, checked to make sure all the features were working properly, checked the main wear and tear sections (feed rollers, PM counts, etc), gave it a quick clean up and couldn't find anything wrong with it. Showed the pastor it was working the way it was supposed to and closed the call.
Next day we get a call back for the exact same thing. Again I headed out to the church to be greeted by only the pastor. Repeat of yesterday, all features worked correctly. Showed the pastor again, no issues and closed the call. I asked the pastor if it happened again to please make sure the secretary would be there since she was the only one having issues and gave him my cell number (yes, I know worst tech move ever. Never give a customer your cell number)
On the way back to the office my cell rang and it was the secretary. She was rather upset (I'm being polite with that description), the machine was still having issues. I told her I'm only about 40 minutes away and asked if she would please stay until I got there so she could show me exactly what was happening. She said yes and I pulled a U turn while calling the boss to give an update.
When I arrived at the church I finally got to meet the secretary and have her tell me exactly what was happening. It was the same issue the pastor described. slight eye twitch
The following conversation is what I can remember, it's not verbatim but it's the general conversation in total.
M: Me S: Secretary
M: Ok, what exactly do you want the copier to do?
S: I want to make copies of this and have it do XYZ
M: Ok, let me try and make the copies for you.
I set it up to do what she wants and lo and behold... i... keep reading on reddit ➡
