Hannah Ann is.... not a person of color.

[This is regarding her latest IG post linked: https://www.instagram.com/p/CDhuZ7UAec6/?igshid=16p8iupyjjkbp ]

Glad she's being body positive and taking care of herself (we know the modeling industry has ridiculous beauty standards, and it must have taken her a while to feel comfortable with herself, WE LOVE POSITIVE GROWTH), BUT as a brown person who grew up being harassed for my skin color of this exact tone, seeing this picture HURTS. Spray tanning is fine, but this degree is a little concerning. Many of the comments really drive home the whole "this skin color is pretty, if you're white" mojo when I was told I was ugly for that identical tone but being a POC.

here she is two days ago, drastically different. this is either a tan, or she edited her skin to look this way. either way her IG post it borders on brownface: http://www.justjared.com/2020/08/02/bachelor-star-hannah-ann-sluss-hits-the-beach-in-malibu/

Calling a white person privileged is judging someone by the color of their skin

It's pretty much self explanatory, I'm not saying that there aren't people who will rather hire or grant a mortgage to a white skinned person before a black skinned one but that's not that persons fault for that and you're just disgusting for telling them they're privileged by their skin color they didn't even choose.

I’m not a fan of the new term POC (person of color)

In my honest opinion, that sounds pretty on par with just calling someone colored or what a possible police dispatch may say over the radio for an APB. Just sounds like we’re regressing back into the 1950s with the term itself. I feel like if I would of said that maybe a couple a years ago, I would be labeled insensitive or a racist. Not trying to turn anything political with my opinion. I’m open to what ever discussion this leads us to, just be respectful as I will do the same for your opinion.

Person of Color vs Colored Person

That radio host in Cleveland getting fired for saying "The U.S. officially has its first colored vice presidential candidate." has me wondering why describing someone as a colored person is outdated and offensive, but saying someone is a person of color is acceptable?

Does switching the order of words make that big of a difference when they say the same thing?

I'm really not trying to be obtuse, I genuinely don't understand this.

Edit: added the word "be". It bothered me that I forgot it.

How to write about a person of color?

I don't really write about people of color, because I'm not sure how to and how I want to describe them and make people think: "Wow, this was a really refreshing take on a character!"

I've already got his story planned out, kind of.

His name is Ishaan, he's in college and he's a chill dude. His mom and dad both have been born in the country the story takes place in (the Netherlands). His mom's origin/descent is East Indian and his dad's is African Caribbean. Ishaan has three younger sisters, who he often takes care of, because their parents are not home that much, working all the time. They are well off and all the hard work of his parents has paid off. Ishaan is not my main character, but the best friend of my main character, who he is close with and they are best bro's. He has a calm and controlled demeanor, something that is much needed around his chaotic friends, but can have a little bit of fun sometimes as well. That he's more responsible, doesn't mean that he's less fun to be around.

I'm not sure how I could describe him in my story. Are there things I should avoid using, like certain pronouns? If I try to describe his appearance, like skin color, what are things that I should avoid and things that will make me at least sound a bit like I know what I'm talking about? Does anyone have tips that I could use? Because I'm really eager for some.

I know this character is going to be a tough one, but I really want to pull it off well and make everyone love him!

anyone else experience this as a polyam person of color?

just curious:

i'm a 30+yr black femme and noticed how difficult polyam dating is as a black person, since the majority of folks i encounter who are poly are non-poc/white.

when i dated monogamously, race was always an issue that came up since many folks don't realize they have implicit biases about who they date/find attractive.

in the polyam spear, it's like i decided to chew double mint gum so to speak: double the flavor of racial and poly biases, the potential for double the fun (#digitaldadjoke). but in all seriousness, it definitely feels like it a tougher dating pool to move through as a polyam person.

i live in a pretty large city, but even the poly community here is majority white and a girl's exhausted. anyone else felt this way?

CAVEAT: if i even catch a HINT of a race troll, or someone suggesting race shouldn't or isn't a factor, you'll be blocked okay thank you for reading!

I’m confused about white Ecuadorians, mestizos, and my own mixed Ecuadorian ethnicity. Am I a person of color, or simply mixed/white passing?

I’m half Ecuadorian, half Italian descent. I have always lived in the US. My Father is of Italian descent (his grandparents immigrated from Southern Italy) and he’s always lived in the US. My Mother was born and raised in Quito, Ecuador, and immigrated to the US in 1984. She’s a 50/50 split of Spaniard and Indigenous. She said she’s considered β€œwhite” and β€œprivileged” when she’s in Ecuador, but when she’s in US she’s considered a POC.

So my question is, what does that make me living in the US? Maybe it’s a pointless question but I never knew how to properly identify my race. I’m white passing since my skin tone is light, but my friends have told me they can tell there’s β€œsome Spanish in there”.

Is it wrong for me to identify as a person of color? Is it wrong to identify as white?

Why do so many non black persons of color seem to think it's ok for us to say the n word just because we aren't white?

I hear other POCs say it all the time, and if I call someone out I'll usually get a response like "It's ok, I'm not white". Last time I checked it was a word that's offensive to black people, and only black people have experienced the oppression that it represents, so only black people are allowed to say it. If you aren't black, then whether or not you're white is irrelevant. While I'll admit it's not quite as bad as it is when a white person says it, it's still at best making light of the history that the word represents, and at worst either implying that you agree with the racism behind it, or that you find the racism black people face funny, or that you just don't care about black people's struggles.

Here's two rules to remember:

Rule 1: If you're white, don't say the n word.

Rule 2: If you aren't white, but you aren't black either, then rule number 1 goes for you too.

Debating fascists as a person of color. (Vent)

To the people of color on this subreddit, have you ever felt coerced into having to argue with a Nazi/ Nazbol?

I've had to deal with this all the time. Due to my familiarity with their arguments I "win" most of the time in the eyes of the people around me, however, I still feel on edge all the time even just in my private friend circles.

A lot of times I feel like being able to debate fascism, at least where I am, is a necessary skill for people of color. When I was in 7th grade I was surrounded by cryptofash people (that's just the kind of neighborhood I live in unfortunately) and because I hadn't really been familiarized with a lot of their bullshit yet I began to internalize a lot of harmful things about my race.

As a result of this experience, always feel like that if I don't "beat" this guy I would have to leave a friend group which had up to that point be very supportive.

Do you guys know any good ways to shut these kinds of conversations down? It would be a massive quality of life fix for me.

Being a person of color truly is exhausting.

I don’t hate myself, but I need to vent because recent events have brought up feelings that I’m not usually β€œallowed” to talk about because race is seen as a sensitive topic.

It’s truly exhausting that my entire existence has to be defined by the color of my skin. I’m whatever race people assume or decide I am just from looking at me before I’m a person. It’s tiresome that, because of the color of my skin, my whole existence is politicized for me. I don’t want people to look at me and assume things about me because my skin is a different color from theirs. I don’t want to have to pretend it’s a compliment to be fetishized because of what I look like. Your perception of me based on my physical appearance doesn’t truly reflect me.

I feel the awkwardness in the room when I’m the only non-white person there, as if it matters, as if I’m different from everyone else. I notice how the conversation and tones of voice and manners of speaking change sometimes when (usually white) people interact with me. I notice it when you pull your purse closer to you or cross to the other side of the street when I’m just minding my own business in public. And know that all of these things hurt me psychologically more deeply than you can imagine. I’m so tired of being treated differently because of something that is beyond my control, and it’s in the littlest, most minuscule and non-blatant of ways. White people get to be seen as the default, as β€œnormal,” and I just want to feel that way too.

I understand these types of posts aren't usually on this subreddit, but I think it's important to confront racism present in Disneyland and how it effects Cast Members, because it would be denial to say there isn't any. Here's the post:

>Im just gonna go ahead and be straight up. This is pretty scary to share.

>HEAVEN: Once upon a time Liesl Tommy cast me as Prince Hans in Frozen: Live at the Hyperion. And I was gooped. GOOPED. There was nothing in my prior history that gave any indication this was possible. Up until then every role I played had to do with my race. Every. Single. One. And even ones where it didn’t (Shakespeare or classical pieces mostly) I was always made aware that the novelty of me being a poc in that role that gave me the part. So much did I not expect to get this part that when I got the callback I rolled my eyes and didn’t take the actual callback seriously. I mean, there was a zero percent chance that Disney would ever let me play a Prince, especially when the dude in the movie is a ginger.

>But then I got it. And immediately everything I thought was possible about my career changed. My whole life I’ve never inwardly felt black. I’ve never inwardly felt white. I’ve always felt like I was Cooper, you know, on the inside. But whether it was every single white human in Utah reminding me that I was β€œthe whitest person they ever knew/saw” (which DIDNT mean how white my skin was. It was how white I ACTED) or Mr. Johnson, my 7th grade drama teacher, telling me that he β€œwanted to put Velcro on the ceiling to see if I’d stick” or Mr. Smith, my high school drama teacher, saying β€œfinally we can do black shows” as soon as I entered high school and then not casting me in roles because of the "optics" of it, or even my best friend in high school Tanner Harmon who called me "blackie", I was always reminded that I was an other.

>So imagine getting paid good money to put on that $10,000 costume and waltzing out to 4000 people a day to play a really amazing part. A fantastic, evil, complicated, person who sings a killer duet and then grabs the show by the throat with a vicious about-face monologue... and n

Kinda funny but mostly depressing. Our minds are gone. I really hope one of those smart Asian countries finally decide to drop the bomb.

Play makeup person of color

I need some advice: My niece is African decent and I want to send a a bunch of play makeup, she's 8yo, along with some other fun stuff (parents have approved the idea).

As a white person who has no idea what shades look good on darker skin, what are some highly pigmented, cheap, readily available products I should consider? It may be play but I also want to put some thought into it.

I'm looking at BYS for an eyeshadow palette (she loves bright colours, some of their pallets look fun), blush and lip gloss. Thought it wouldn't hurt to ask for other brands that I should consider. I would hate to send her something that has no pigment and takes away the fun of the whole thing. Any other items you think would be nice to send to her would be welcome. It's being mailed to China so it can't be liquids.

EDIT: Also am I overthinking this?

Stop calling yourself or people around you "Person of color" if you don't include everyone.

Because each and every human being has skin color, including "white". So if you're saying "Person of color" you can also just say person. Or human. Reserving the term only for people with a rather dark skin color is so illogical, stupid and fucked up. If you want to distance yourself because of your skin color and because you think you need to be called a special name, you really have mental issues you need to have checked out.

And I'm beginning to question the sanity of those people who insist on being categorized by such means in general. It seems to me more and more parents throw away the baby after birth and decide to raise the placenta instead. Which makes total sense, since a placenta doesn't have a brain and the idea of wanting to be categorized in such a manner can only exist in brain dead people.

Were all human, we're one species. And still there are millions of alledged intelligent human beings out there who want to distinguish everyone by their fucking skin color. I just don't get them. And I think if you're one of them, you don't get yourself, either.

free software development mentoring for persons of color

As a lot of you may know from news articles or experience, the tech industry is very white and very male. Also, in this time of coronavirus, I was thinking there might be some people out there who may have decided to try software development for the first time.

I'd love to offer free mentoring and help to persons of color. I've been a professional developer for about 7 years, and am currently a software architect at one of the larger credit unions in the US (not flashy, but hey! it's a great job). Part of my job description is mentoring junior developers and I think I'm pretty good at it.

The majority of my experience is in web development both on the front and back end. I can do just about any language if you're just starting out. If you're further along and are more experienced, we should talk about what you're doing and if my skills fit what you're looking for.

I also know how to knit and can give you a primer on that if you'd like.

Send me a message if you'd like more information or would like to connect!

Molly's behaviour in "Lowkey Tripping" and being in a relationship with a non-black person of color

First of all, I have to say that Issa was looking like a goddess in that Wine Down. Incredible.

Second, I am not cosigning Molly's general rudeness. That is one of her character flaws and she won't be able to build long-term relationships with new people in her life until she manages that, and I hope that therapy will help her through that.

What I wanted to say though, from my perspective as a dark skinned black female corporate lawyer engaged to a mixed Asian man is the following.

As a visibly black person living as a minority, you are always about the ways in which race affects how people perceive you and react to you. It's always "there", palpable, even though you can rarely "know" that discrimination happened because overt racism or racial bias is much rarer these days. But you know. You've seen how others are treated. As a lawyer, you've seen how you had to be objectively so much better than everyone else to be considered. You've felt the pressure of having to be perfect to be considered normal. Molly is in a black firm now, but she was at a white one for years. In a sophisticated work environment where you're the only (or one of few) black faces, the pressure is always on. If I told you how many of the lawyers at the major firm I work in are black, you would be shocked.

It all makes you hyper-aware and sensitive and it is not necessarily wrong. But it can make you paranoid at times, it takes a very real psychological toll on you. It makes you angry, and you don't "want" to be angry. You wish you could go through life "not angry" and not worried about these things. But you are, because of the way you were born. And that makes you angrier. Especially having done "everything right" according to society, you hate that it is still not enough. Remember the arc in s2 where the white associate was being paid more than her?

My (future) inlaws are white and Asian, and we've had similar conversations as the one with Victor. I'm not like Molly, so it didn't go as bad but I got how she felt in that moment. You are with other people of color, so they get racism. They experience it and they all have painful histories. They all have battles to fight today still, that we all should support.

But they don't know what it feels to be black. This is a specific baggage. Like it or not, no other race has been and continues to be so demonized and dehumanised. Especially, being a dark skinned black woman. In that moment, even though none of you are white and you think

Hannah Ann is not a person of color... (regarding her recent IG)

She is deleting comments of those calling her out....
