I'm relatively new to oboe (started in January) but everything I hear about oboe describes new oboists to be "terrible" and "barely able to make a sound" while that hasn't been my experience at all...

also, reeds are the bane of my existence. you expect me to pay 17$ for a reed that's gonna last 2 weeks at most?? pshhh.

Chance a well-rounded midwestern oboe player for business schools...

Hey guys,

My confidence is extremely low, and idk what to do because my extracurriculars are shitty and don't relate to my prospective major.

Demographics:** White girl from suburban MI. Decent public high school.

Single parent (low middle class) w/ a divorced other parent (upper middle class). Only one parent has a degree.

**Intended Major(s): business, accounting, or econ. I might minor in math or music depending on the school and whether my credits transfer.

This is an ISSUE. None of my extracurriculars are business related. I mainly focused on my sport, music, work and clubs in high school because they're the things I'm good at.

ACT/SAT/SAT II:

1470 on my PSAT (221 index, which should qualify me for national merit in Michigan).

I haven't taken the ACT, but I've been getting 34-35 on practice tests.

UW/W GPA and Rank:

4.35GPA, weighted. School has a fucked up gpa system. An A+ is a 4.33. they don't tell us unweighted, and don't weigh AP's on a 5.0 scale.

My school doesn't rank.

Coursework: AP/IB/Dual Enrollment classes, AP/IB scores, etc

I don't want to reveal myself too much! But here's a general rundown.

Mainly honors freshman year.

APUSH and Calc BC sophomore year, mainly honors classes

4 APs + Calc 3 (got an A!) and Differential Equations dual enrollment junior year

4 APs senior year

Band all 4 years, top band sophomore year

Awards: these are sad

  1. All-State Music, highly-ranked in state on my niche instrument

  2. Accepted (as one of two people who play my instrument) into the top group of semi-prestigious music summer camp

  3. very very likely National Merit Finalist

  4. regional music award

Extracurriculars: Include leadership & summer activities

Ok, I'm Gonna be extremely vague here. Still not sure how to order these.

  1. School sport (co captain next year).

It's kind of a niche sport. I can't get recruited for it.

  1. All-Student Body (hopeful VP, committee leader)

Set up a bunch of projects within school yadda yadda

  1. regional youth music groups

I'm in multiple. One is very prestigious and I'm 3rd chair. One is less prestigious, and I'm first chair.

  1. part time job:

I work like 12-15 hours a week at a local store. Started this year to help family and hopefully save up for a car.

  1. Class Student Council

I plan homecoming stuff, prom, run social media, and I'm in charge of advertising

  1. Volunteering club outreach leader

hey it's sort of leadership lmfao

Operation Oboe is a clear indicator of what a badass Zavala actually is

"No one gets left behind, Piccolo. No one. I'll break those Fallen myself"

He says this after we complete the Exodus Crash strike when he thinks we are MIA.

I'm not sure on the specifics of operation Oboe, but I like to think it comes down to something similar to Zavala purging the Arcadian Valley of pretty much any and all Fallen.

Some people may thing think he is a bit of a lackluster leader at times, but no matter what happens in Beyond Light or further down the line, I'm with him.

Edit: wow, didn't expect so many responses. Thanks for the awards, Guardians!

Should I pick up bari sax in addition to oboe?

I'm a college freshman in oboe performance and I used to play both bari sax and oboe in high school, but when I got into college I stopped playing the bari and now I kinda miss it. Now I'm considering playing bari again but I'm wondering do you think playing it again would be a good idea? Or would it mess with my oboe embouchure. Back in high school, it would mess with my embouchure but I feel like the real reason for that could've just been me not practicing oboe enough in general.

Buying a used oboe

Hi,

I was considering buying this https://www.kijiji.ca/v-view-details.html?adId=1520940131

Seller says that he's selling it because his sister stopped playing four years ago. When I asked what brand it was, he said it was a "selmer style oboe".

Now, I know I want to test the key mechanisms, examine the pads/sealing, the cork, and check for cracks.

Other than that, do you, the experienced, see any red flags with grabbing this for a super basic learner model?

Thanks.

oboe reed in 5 minutes

Here is a blog post about making oboe reeds quickly. I think it's really important to be able to make reeds quickly, partly because I don't know too many people who enjoy spending hours a day making reeds. Also, I think reeds made quickly tend to turn out better. I know I've shown up to a concert or rehearsal without a functional reed (more often than I would like to admit), and had better luck scraping a blank and using that instead.

Anyway, check out the post for more information, and there is a video demonstration of a 5 minute reed, followed by a mediocre rendition of the Strauss concerto exposition. I'm not suggesting that everyone start racing against a timer, or that a 5 minute reed is the ultimate goal (a 3 minute reed, or a 6 minute and 23 second reed, or 10 minute and 5 second reed are all fine), but hopefully there is something to takeaway from this:

Currently I'm creating an orchestra work and I'm still not sure if it's doable for oboe. The tempo is dotted crochet = 65, quite slow, but I'm on the fence in giving it to the clarinet. I’ve played the oboe for years but only intermittently. Whenever I pick it up again the worst part is (unsurprisingly) getting a reed to work again.

Has anyone here tried a LΓ©gΓ¨re reed? They are advertised as European scrape - which I’ve played on for a bit, but I don’t think I could handle that level of resistance now. A LΓ©gΓ¨re reed runs about $117 so I’d like to know more about what I’m getting myself into!
