Solar‐Driven Nitrogen Fixation Catalyzed by Stable Radical‐Containing MOFs: Improved Efficiency Induced by a Structural Transformation

Herein we present a new viologen‐based radical‐containing metal‐organic framework (RMOF) Gd‐IHEP‐7, which upon heating in air undergoes a single‐crystal‐to‐single‐crystal transformation to generate Gd‐IHEP‐8. Both RMOFs exhibit excellent air and water stability as a result of favorable radical‐radical interactions, and their long‐lifetime radicals result in wide spectral absorption in the range 200‐2500 nm. Gd‐IHEP‐7 and Gd‐IHEP‐8 show excellent activity toward solar‐driven nitrogen fixation, with ammonia production rates of 128 and 220 µmol h ‐1 g ‐1 , respectively. Experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that both RMOFs have similar nitrogen fixation pathways. The enhanced catalytic efficiency of Gd‐IHEP‐8 versus Gd‐IHEP‐7 is attributed to intermediates stabilized by enhanced hydrogen bonding.

Crystalline Red Phosphorus Nanoribbons: Large‐Scale Synthesis and Electrochemical Nitrogen Fixation

Crystalline red phosphorus (cRP) with a layered structure are synthesized on a large scale by an efficient chemical vapor transport method and few‐layer 2D nanoribbons are exfoliated. Theoretical and experimental studies demonstrate that the cRP nanoribbons are promising in electrochemical nitrogen reduction in aqueous solutions under ambient conditions.

Abstract

Two dimensional (2D) nanoribbons constitute an emerging nanoarchitecture for advanced microelectronics and energy conversion due to the stronger size confinement effects compared to traditional nanosheets. Triclinic crystalline red phosphorus (cRP) composed by a layered structure is a promising 2D phosphorus allotrope and the tube‐like substructure is beneficial to the construction of nanoribbons. In this work, few‐layer cRP nanoribbons are synthesized and the effectiveness in the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is investigated. An iodine‐assisted chemical vapor transport (CVT) method is developed to synthesize circa 10 g of bulk cRP lumps with a yield of over 99 %. With the aid of probe ultrasonic treatment, high‐quality cRP microcrystals are exfoliated into few‐layer nanoribbons (cRP NRs) with large aspect ratios. As non‐metallic materials, cRP NRs are suitable for the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction. The ammonia yield is 15.4 μg h−1 mgcat.−1 at −0.4 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode in a neutral electrolyte under ambient conditions and the Faradaic efficiency is 9.4 % at −0.2 V. Not only is cRP a promising catalyst, but also the novel strategy expands the application of phosphorus‐based 2D structures beyond that of traditional nanosheets.

Electroenzymatic Nitrogen Fixation Using an Organic Redox Polymer‐Immobilized MoFe Protein System

Nitrogenase is the only biological catalyst that is known to convert dinitrogen (N2) to ammonia (NH3). Nitrogenase‐catalyzed NH3 formation in vivo is energetically intensive due to a series of events, including a Fe protein cycle coupled with ATP hydrolysis. Furthermore, the complexity of nitrogenase’s cofactors plagues related bioelec­trodes by unstable and poor electric wiring between the cofactors and the electrode, thereby lowering the overall bioelectrocatalytic perfor­mance. We report an organic redox polymer‐based electroenzymatic nitrogen fixation system using a metal‐free redox polymer namely neutral red‐modified poly(glycidyl methacrylate‐co‐methylmethacry­late‐co‐poly(ethyleneglycol)methacrylate) with a low redox potential of −0.58 V vs. SCE. The stable and efficient electric wiring of nitrogenase within the redox polymer matrix enables mediated bioelectrocatalysis of N3‐, NO2‐ and N2 to NH3 catalyzed by the MoFe protein via the polymer‐bound redox moieties distributed in the polymer matrix in the absence of the Fe protein. Bulk bioelectrosynthetic experiments pro­duced 209 ± 30 nmol NH3 nmol MoFe‐1 h‐1 from N2 reduction. 15N2 labeling experiments and NMR analysis were performed to confirm biosynthetic N2 reduction to NH3.

Promoted Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation in Fe‐Ni Layered Double Hydroxide Arrays Coupled to Carbon Nanofibers: The Role of Phosphorus Doping

Through phosphorus doping , the charge distribution in Fe‐Ni layered double hydroxide (LDH) is regulated to promote the activation of nitrogen. This strategy offers an opportunity of tapping the unknown potentials of the well‐known hydrotalcites (LDHs) in the field of electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation.

Abstract

The key to bringing the electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation from conception to application lies in the development of high‐efficiency, cost‐effective electrocatalysts. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), also known as hydrotalcites, are promising electrocatalysts for water splitting due to multiple metal centers and large surface areas. However, their activities in the electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation are unsatisfactory. Now, a simple and effective way of phosphorus doping is presented to regulate the charge distribution in LDHs, thus promoting the nitrogen adsorption and activation. The P‐doped LDHs are further coupled to a self‐supported, conductive matrix, that is, a carbon nanofibrous membrane, which prevents their aggregation as well as ensuring rapid charge transfer at the interface. By this strategy, decent ammonia yield (1.72×10−10 mol s−1 cm−2) and Faradaic efficiency (23 %) are delivered at −0.5 V vs. RHE in 0.1 m Na2SO4.

A Janus Fe‐SnO2 Catalyst that Enables Bifunctional Electrochemical Nitrogen Fixation

NRR and NOR: Fe‐SnO2 was synthesized as an electrocatalyst for both N2 reduction and oxidation (NRR and NOR). The Fe in Fe‐SnO2 acts as oxygen vacancy anchored Fe and lattice doped Fe, which enhances the adsorption and activation of N2 on SnO2 and improves the electrical conductivity of SnO2. The catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance (NRR: NH3 yield 82.7 μg h−1 mgcat.−1, FE 20.4 %; NOR: NO3− yield 42.9 μg h−1 mgcat.−1, FE 0.84 %).

Abstract

Electrochemical N2 reduction reactions (NRR) and the N2 oxidation reaction (NOR), using H2O and N2, are a sustainable approach to N2 fixation. To date, owing to the chemical inertness of nitrogen, emerging electrocatalysts for the electrochemical NRR and NOR at room temperature and atmospheric pressure remain largely underexplored. Herein, a new‐type Fe‐SnO2 was designed as a Janus electrocatalyst for achieving highly efficient NRR and NOR catalysis. A high NH3 yield of 82.7 μg h−1 mgcat.−1 and a Faraday efficiency (FE) of 20.4 % were obtained for NRR. This catalyst can also serve as an excellent NOR electrocatalyst with a NO3− yields of 42.9 μg h−1 mgcat.−1 and a FE of 0.84 %. By means of experiments and DFT calculations, it is revealed that the oxygen vacancy‐anchored single‐atom Fe can effectively adsorb and activate chemical inert N2 molecules, lowering the energy barrier for the vital breakage of N≡N and resulting in the enhanced N2 fixation performance.

Lots of ancient weather gods are closely associated with agricultural fertility. Apparently, lightning is in fact a very important part of the nitrogen cycle. Obviously the ancients didn't know about nitrogen, but could this phenomena have been noticed and inspired the myth?

Heads-up for people working on nitrogen fixation - Your 15N2 gas might be contaminated.

If you used 15N2 gas from Sigma-Adlrich to measure nitrogen fixation and you got extremely high rates, 15N ammonia/nitrate/nitrite contamination might be the cause. This is huge (=years of work down the drain) and I feel really for the poor souls affected by this.

The key to bringing the electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation from conception to application lies in the development of high‐efficiency, cost‐effective electrocatalysts. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), also known as hydrotalcites, are promising electrocatalysts for water splitting due to multiple metal centers and large surface areas. However, their activities in the electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation are unsatisfactory. Herein, we report a simple and effective way of phosphorus doping to regulate the charge distribution in LDHs, thus promoting the nitrogen adsorption and activation. The P‐doped LDHs are further coupled to a self‐supported, conductive matrix, i.e., a carbon nanofibrous membrane, which prevents their aggregation as well as ensures rapid charge transfer at the interface. By this strategy, decent ammonia yield (1.72×10–10 mol s–1 cm–2) and Faradaic efficiency (23%) are delivered at –0.5 V vs. RHE in 0.1M Na2SO4, which offers a new opportunity of tapping the unknown potentials of the well‐known hydrotalcites (LDHs) in the field of electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation.

A Janus Fe‐SnO2 Catalyst Enables Bifunctional Electrochemical Nitrogen Fixation

Electrochemical N2 reduction reactions (NRR) and N2 oxidation reaction (NOR), using H2O and N2, represent a sustainable approach to N2 fixation and arouse widespread attention. To date, due to the chemical inertness of nitrogen, emerging electrocatalysts for the electrochemical NRR and NOR at room temperature and atmospheric pressure remain largely under explored. Herein, a new‐type Fe–SnO2 was rationally designed as a Janus electrocatalyst for achieving highly efficient NRR and NOR catalysis. A high NH3 yield of 82.7 µg h−1 mgcat.−1 and a Faraday efficiency (FE) of 20.4% were obtained for NRR, superior than all noble‐metal‐free electrocatalysts reported in acid electrolyte. This catalyst can also serve as an excellent NOR electrocatalyst with a NO3− yields of 42.9 µg h−1 mgcat.−1 and a FE of 0.84%. By means of experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we reveal that the oxygen vacancy‐anchored single‐atom Fe can effectively adsorb and activate chemical inert N2 molecules, lower the energy barrier for the vital breakage of N≡N, resulting in the enhanced N2 fixation performance.
