Non Non Biyori - Thursday Anime Discussion Thread

Welcome to the weekly Thursday Anime Discussion Thread! Each week, we're here to discuss various older anime series. Today we are discussing...

Non Non Biyori

Asahigaoka might look like typical, boring countryside to most; however, no day in this village can ever be considered colorless thanks to five students of varying ages occupying the only class in the only school in town. The youngest student is first grader Renge Miyauchi, who brings an unadulterated wit, curiosity, and her characteristic catchphrase, "Nyanpasu!" Then there are the Koshigaya siblings consisting of the quiet ninth grader and elder brother Suguru, diminutive eighth grader Komari, and the mischievous seventh grader Natsumi. The recent arrival of Tokyo-raised fifth grader Hotaru Ichijou, who appears overdeveloped for her age and thus naturally holds an air of maturity, rounds out this lively and vibrant group of five classmates.

Based on the manga penned and illustrated by Atto, Non Non Biyori chronicles the not-so-normal daily lives of this group of friends as they engage in their own brand of fun and frolic, and playfully struggle with the realities of living in a rural area.

/r/anime Awards 2020 Anime of the Year Jury Discusses "Kaguya-sama Season 2"

Previous Discussions

#Introduction

This post was collaboratively written by the Anime of the Year Jury of the 2020 /r/anime Awards. It was also organized, edited and put together by their category host, /u/JoseiToAoiTori. Kaguya-sama Season 2 was chosen by vote for this discussion which isn't fully indicative of its position in the jury's final rankings as each juror's individual perspective is subject to change. Similar perspectives of individual jury members are grouped together for clarity.

Jury Members: /u/ArcaneGarbageman, /u/deafnesss, /u/FrenziedHero, /u/furno5000, /u/hauntmeagain, /u/--Ananas--, /u/MalacostracaFlame, /u/MisterJaguar, /u/Nickknight8, /u/Ok_Structure1319, /u/Patureau, /u/PerfectPublican, /u/rudygnuj, /u/Schinco, ShakespeareInLove (alias), /u/Theleux, /u/Thrasher439

##1. Do you think Kaguya-sama significantly reinvents the romcom formula? If not, does it manage to set itself apart from other romcoms?

###Familiar formula with brilliant execution

There is an interview with Aka Akasaka, the author of Kaguya-sama, where he stated that he was surprised that so many people were claiming that his work had such a unique concept. He was quite shocked that it hadn't been done before. Kaguya-sama doesn't reinvent the romcom formula in any significant way, nor does it need to. A romcom that wishes to set itself apart would attempt to subvert the viewer's expectations, but Kaguya-sama takes elements that romcom fans are familiar with and turns them up to eleven while being self-aware in doing so. So while Kaguya-sama isn't a particularly unique take on the genre, it's just a solid romcom with a thoughtful story and likable characters. Visually engaging skits allow the show to branch out from its formula and develop the supporting cast. Each character has defining personality traits leading to some well-timed jokes, great reactions and fun character dynamics. The dialogue is sharp, the mind games are entertaining, and the mix of mostly episodic vignettes with plenty of nods and callbacks to previous skits make for a cohesive and entertaining story of adolescent love. Season 2 in particular shifts further away from the unique hook that Sea

Nominations for the 2019 r/anime Awards are now open!

LINK TO THE NOMINATIONS WEBSITE

Welcome back to the 4th annual /r/anime Awards and the last of the decade. Following the end of 2019, it is time to reflect back on all the best anime of this year. And what better way to do that than through nominating your favourite shows for the /r/anime Awards 2019?

Just like last year, we'll be using a website to handle nomination voting. Unlike last year, however, the Genre Awards have been pre-allocated by the Hosts, and all you have to do is simply vote for your favourite show in a given category. As always, you can see the current allocation sheet here. Note that a show is only eligible for a single genre. Likewise, for the Main Awards, shows are allocated into Shorts, Movie, or AOTY.

For the Character Awards, a single character can only be nominated for either Main Dramatic, Main Comedic, Supporting Dramatic, or Supporting comedic. The main and supporting character distinctions are now mainly decided by Anilist standards, which we defer to when we decide whether a character counts as main or supporting, barring exceptions. In addition, a character can also be nominated for Antagonist. For the Cast award, you nominate an entire show and not any single character.

As usual, the top 4 most voted for shows/characters in each category will comprise the public nominations for said category, which will then be combined with the jury nominations. Note that Anime of the Year and OP/ED will use the top 5 instead. This year we have the addition of the three Test Categories: Sports, Script, and Sound Design. These nominations will be split from the jury, but there is no practical difference when voting.

You have until January 10th to submit your votes.

Following the nominations we publish the results and then you will begin ranking the nominated shows throughout the ensuing weeks.

Please follow this link (or the one up top) to vote.

If a character is missing that you would like to nominate, please write them in here

Nomination Results for the 2019 r/anime Awards!

LINK TO THE NOMINATION RESULTS

And the results are in! Roughly a week ago we kicked off the /r/anime Awards with the public nominations, and we're now ready and happy to present the results.

While the public votes were mostly clear, we ended up with a three-way tie in Supporting Comedic between Saku Momoi (Joshikousei no Mudazukai), Mikan Hinatsuki (Machikado Mazoku), and Lillith (Machikado Mazoku). As such, we need a tie-breaker, which you can vote for here.

While everyone on /r/anime diligently voted since the start of January, the /r/anime Awards Jury has been hard at work since November to watch as much as they could, discuss endlessly, and pick their own addition to the nominations. The combined efforts of the jury and the public is what lead us here.

Please keep in mind that the brand new Test Categories have the Public and Jury results split up, while every other category keeps them merged as usual.

So what now?

Now the ranking begins. Starting from tomorrow (Tuesday the 14th of January) we will set up voting threads between the current nominations to decide both the winner and the rankings. The order will be the Genre awards, starting with Action, followed by the Character awards, the Production awards, the Test categories, and finally the Main awards culminating in the coveted Anime of the Year 2019.

#Below you can see a schedule of the next few weeks of the /r/anime Awards.

Isopoda

Isopoda Language Download PDF Watch Edit Isopoda is an order of crustaceans that includes woodlice and their relatives. Isopods live in the sea, in fresh water, or on land. All have rigid, segmented exoskeletons, two pairs of antennae, seven pairs of jointed limbs on the thorax, and five pairs of branching appendages on the abdomen that are used in respiration. Females brood their young in a pouch under their thorax.

Aquatic species mostly live on the seabed or bottom of freshwater bodies of water, but some taxa can swim for a short distance. Terrestrial forms move around by crawling and tend to be found in cool, moist places. Some species are able to roll themselves into a ball as a defense mechanism or to conserve moisture.

There are over 10,000 species of isopod worldwide, with around 4,500 species found in marine environments, mostly on the seabed, 500 species in fresh water, and another 5,000 species on land. The order is divided into eleven suborders. The fossil record of isopods dates back to the Carboniferous period (in the Pennsylvanian epoch), at least 300 million years ago, when isopods lived in shallow seas. The name Isopoda is derived from the Greek roots iso- (from ἴσος Γsos, meaning "equal") and -pod (from ποδ-, the stem of πούς poΓΊs, meaning "foot").[2][3]

Description Edit

List of fauna on pollland

This is a very long read and you are in no way required to read it all. If you have a short attention span like me you should probably leave

Together with aditya (and users like u/Mia_b-p suggestions) I’ve compiled a list of potential fauna for pollland. I won’t be including small animals such as slugs and bugs. We’re definitely no experts on biology which means some of this may be inaccurate, so if anyone sees anything unrealistic let me know and I will fix it.

Class: reptilia

Created by me and u/adityagiri3600

The Dracalta, a lizard the size of a dog, is a terrifying creature that lives inside trees. This lizard will hide within the trees and jump out at its prey. When it locates a potential victim, it will jump out and grab on with its claws. It will then claw and bite its way through the flesh of the creature, until it dies. If others are nearby, it will let out a horrendous screech to alert them. The Dracalta’s main prey is Colvine, Pegaceler, Megathere, sometimes occulion, and the occasional human. It’s strategy is only occasionally successful, as it usually is shaken off. The Dracalta can survive being thrown at speeds of 50 miles per hour as well as run very far very fast. That means that they survive most encounters. Because of that, they’ve become apex predators.

The megalania is a big lizard about 11-17 feet long. It typically sleeps in the ocean or in lakes. It is an apex predator which hunts Colvine, Pegaceler, Occulion, bananales makashas, Megathere, and sometimes even their own species. The megalania sleep in rivers, lakes and the ocean. Long ago, the Megalania primarily existed in the south. Then humans came along and hunted them almost to extinction. The megalania were forced to flee to the north, where they had to adapt to a more terrestrial lifestyle. They have an incredibly strong jaw, and are even venomous. They have evolved to be able to climb mountains and cliffs such as the ashka drop. Every once in a while it will climb onto land and begin to hunt for food. The Megalania is stealthy enough to sneak up to its prey, and can jump high enough to be able to take the prey by surprise. It has an incredible bite strength, and even if it loses its enemy may die from the megalania’s venom anyway. Because of this they have become apex predators. The megalania has become endangered due to trophy

The r/anime Awards 2019 Announcement and Jury Application

LINK TO THE JUROR APPLICATION

Welcome back to the 4th annual /r/anime Awards! It's time again to watch a bunch of seasonals and argue about which one was best, or at least which one was least bad. Based on feedback from the previous year we have a lot of new changes, the biggest ones being:

  • Test Categories! A new way for us to test out the potential of new, more experimental categories without clogging up the existing ones. They also allow us to test out other new ideas in a separate environment, like splitting Public and Jury nominees. You can read more about it below.
  • We are also bringing back the old Host Allocation system from 2017. This will hopefully make the nomination process smoother and allow the jurors more breathing room. You can view the allocations here. If you think a series was misplaced or missing, please submit an allocation change suggestion here. Note that Fall shows are still airing and will therefore likely be missing on the sheet. They will be added by the Hosts as the season progresses.
  • This year we'll be placing a much larger focus on the staff behind the anime we love. Every nominated entry will have relevant staff credits for their category in order to celebrate the people behind them.
  • Movies are now eligible for the Genre Awards.
  • Something which was sorely missing last year: Bonus Awards will return! You'll once again be able to vote for "Best meme", "Best mom", and many silly one-off awards. Stay tuned for those.

In case you missed it, here is how the Awards looked last year: Announcement | Results post | Website | Livestream

The Awards Process

The base format of the Awards are still the same: The Awards are split into two groups, the Public and the Jury, who will each nominate shows and separately rank them.

The Public is everyone on /r/anime. You will select 4 nominees per category, once again using the amazing website developed by our very own /u/geo1088. You can use this site to vote for

[Anime Awards] 2018 /r/Anime Awards Nominations! Vote Here!

#LINK TO THE NOMINATION WEBSITE

awards wa mou shinderu

Welcome back, everyone, to the 3rd Annual /r/anime Awards! With the New Year only days away, it’s the perfect time to reflect back on what we’ve done over the past year. How much time have we spent watching seasonals, and which, if any, were actually worth watching? What better way to decide that than by picking your favorites of the year to be nominations for the prestigious /r/Anime Awards?

This year we have mercifully moved away from the previously used Contest Mode system that everyone seemed to despise and on to much, much better things with this lovely new website Santa left for us under the tree! Most of it is pretty slick and intuitive, but some stuff does require a bit of explaining.

As always, we take public feedback seriously, and you’ve made it quite clear that you want to decide where the shows you vote for are allocated. You can now do exactly that!

Simply tab through the genre categories and scroll or search for the shows you'd like to nominate in each. To emphasize: doing this means you are nominating the show for the given tab's genre category. Please don't assign things to genres if you're not voting for them.
Don't worry about splitting votes, vote for the shows you most like in the categories you think are most appropriate. The shows with the most total votes will go on to become nominees in whatever genre they were most selected. For instance, a show with 1500 votes across three different genres will beat out a show with 1000 votes in one genre. If all the top nominations for a given genre are taken, the show will compete in the next common genre allocation, up to a point. There will be a minimum threshold amount of votes that a show must get in a genre in order to be considered, so as to avoid less popular categories being filled with shows that don't really fit the genre but didn't make it elsewhere. (If that's confusing, don't worry about it. We're just preventing unlikely issues)

It works the same for the Character categories, where you vote on where you want certain characters to go (main/supporting, dramatic/comedic), with the exception of Antagonist, which can have overlap with other character categories. All other categories are very straightforward, just vote for whatever you think is most deserving of a nomination in a particular category. The top

The Abundance and Distribution of Invertebrates and Relation to Macrophyte Communities in Intertidal Zone of Shatt Al-Arab River, Basrah, Iraq- Juniper Publishers

Abstract

The samples were collected once in three months during 2015 from intertidal zone of Shatt al-Arab River from eight sampling sites. For the purpose of evaluating the spatial and seasonal variations in the diversity, density and abundance of invertebrates in relation to diversity of Aquatic plant and related the dynamics of water temperature, salinity, water transparency, pH, dissolved oxygen, phosphate and nitrate. The diversity and distribution patterns of certain invertebrate's species were clearly related to plants and water quality as evident from the present study.

In the present study tried to assess indices invertebrate species as Shannon-Weaver index, Simpson's index, and Index of Evenness species in eight sites at Shore of Shatt Al- Arab River and predict the state of water according to species and physicochemical parameters. The indices were evaluated at individual species level and varied species to species. In the study 37 invertebrate species from two phylum and five classes were observed. The Annual density of Arthropoda and Mollusca were 61.32% and 38.68% respectively. The class wise densities were as Bivalve (1.22%), Insecta (4.27%), Malacostraca (27.50%), and Maxillopoda (29.52%), Gastropoda (37.46%).

Keywords:Β Invertebrates; Macrophyte; Intertidal zone; Shatt Al-Arab

Introduction

Aquatic invertebrates are important components of aquatic food web. They act as decomposers, detritus, an indicator and primary food for others. Benthic invertebrates have been attractive targets of biological monitoring efforts because they are a diverse group of long-lived, sedentary species that react strongly and often, predictably to human influence on aquatic ecosystems [1]. Macroinvertebrates and water quality are interrelated to each other, as macroinvertebrates are a potential indicator of water quality [2]. They are most frequently used in biomonitoring studies because the responses of macroinvertebrates to organic and inorganic pollution have been extensively documented [3].

A number of studies have compared the ability

The Non Non Biyori rewatch interest thread (Nyanpasu edition~)

Greetings /r/anime!

One year after my first hosted rewatch of Gochiusa, me and my co-host /u/MalacostracaFlame are happy to announce a Non Non Biyori rewatch to celebrate for the upcoming Non Non Biyori movie!

What is Non Non Biyori?

Living at the countryside can be different than living in the city. Ichijou Hotaru, an elementary student which just moved from Tokyo to the countryside can tell you everything about it. Together with the mature Komari, the tomboyish Natsume and the oh-so cuddly Renge, Hotaru is going to learn how to adapt to her new surroundings. Experience the life in the middle of the country, while seeing the girls having fun with each other in the green landscape of Japan.

MAL

Subreddit: /r/Non_Non_Biyori

Also has its own WT!-thread.

What can first-timers expect from the show?

Chill atmosphere of the countryside, cute girls, nyanpassu-memes and bad wifi connections.

When will the rewatch start?

The first thread of the rewatch will be on the 27th of April at 11 PM CEST (Central European Summer Time), also see schedule below.

Are there legal streams available for Non non Biyori?

*with exception of the two ova episodes.

Further Information and Suggestions

Just like last year, I will spice the threads up with some side activities people can participate in (so we don't only get big essays). There is going to be a drawing contest and a puzzle challenge with prizes. The order we're going to be following is the broadcast order instead of the chronological one, but we can assure you that this order won't affect your understanding of the story. Furthermore, the thread of the first OVA will be posted after the last episode of season 1, followed up with a general discussion thread where people can discuss about season 1 and the thread of the second OVA will be posted after the last episode of season 2 followed up with a general discussion thread for the whole series.

[/r/Anime Awards] 2016 And the winners are...

#How to read the results

The results are ordered from best to worst by the jury of that award. You can then see the following metrics:

  • Votes - The % of votes gotten.
  • Interest - The % of voters who have declared they watched the anime partially or completely.
  • Finished - The % of voters that has finished the anime. The difference between "Interest" and "Finished" tells a lot about accessibility of the show.
  • Supporters - The % of voters who declared they finished the show and picked it as their best. Or rather, the ratio of "finished" declarations to votes it got. This has funny implications and you're going to find out why later.

Highest scores in each column are bolded.

An entry that has been present in the popular vote, but discarded by the jury is marked by italics and placed at the end.

#Action

Jury pick: Haikyuu!! S2+3

>We felt that Haikyuu!! succeeded the most as an action series in 2016 because it was able to elicit the strongest reactions from us. No other nominee in this category got us more hyped or excited while watching the action unfold. Haikyuu is able to create a strong connection between its sports setting and the audience by being exemplary in virtually every category that is important for the genre. This includes superb animation, skilled direction, complete clarity of action, and excellent character development right on the court. Both of the consistently high-quality seasons that aired in 2016 are worthy of the top spot.

Community Pick: Mob Psycho 100 with 42.9% votes

Verdict: Votes Interest Finished Supporters
Haikyuu!! S2+3 13.0% 45.9% 34.5% 37.8%
Mob Psycho 100 42.9% 84.8% 71.1% 60.3%

Boku no Hero Academia 16.9% 83.2% 73.6% 23.0%
Keijo!!!!!!!! 8.8% 62.9% 38.8% 22.7%

It was a super tough choice between the top 3 nominees especially since they're all really excellent series. In the end though, the other choices got... served by Haikyuu.

Monstrobiologist's Report: Enormous Arthropods of Terraria

My first few days in Terraria were harrowing. Many times, I came close to death- and a not insignificant number of these close calls were because of the massive arthropods native to the island chain.

Yet even as I recall the times these creatures nearly killed me, they fascinate me at the same time; the ways these gigantic creatures differ from their ordinary counterparts grant important insight into the nature of the region as a whole.

Enclosed is a report on many of the more notable giant insect, arachnid, and other arthropod species I've observed in Terraria. My hope is that this will both reduce the number of human casualties to these dangerous creatures, and inform of the unique place they have in Terraria's ecosystem.

Terrarian Giant Antlion

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Arthropoda

Class: Insecta

Order: Neuroptera

Family: Myrmeleontidae

Genus: Megadistoleon

Species: Bellatorus

Megadistoleon Bellatorus, the Terrarian Giant Antlion, seems at first glance to be very similar to smaller antlion species. Their larvae have a bright orange-and-yellow coloration that I, at first, mistook for a jewel- before it spat approximately two cubic meters of sand into my gut and cost me another Health Potion. This incident was how I learned that ordinary antlion species do, in fact, throw sand at their prey, to keep them from escaping their trademark sand traps. The adults swarm during sandstorms, which also appears to be their primary mating season; for this reason, adult Giant Antlions are colloquially known as "Swarmers". The creature's life cycle is similar; as a larva, it eats until it reaches sufficient size to pupate, at which point it undergoes metamorphosis and then searches for a mate.

However, the difference in size comes with some unexpected disadvantages for the Antlion. Their pits are much harder to take anyone by surprise, given that they appear to be gaping holes in the desert; they can also make fewer of these pits, as there's only so much desert to go around. The Sand Slimes and Vultures native to the desert are often not easy to kill and eat, and the Zombies and Demon Eyes can often overwhelm the smaller Antlions when they attack in hordes- to say nothing of a Blood Moon or a Solar Eclipse.

*The Giant Antlions, however, also boast slightly increased brain functions over their ant-eating counterparts, and thus they are able to do something completely unexpected. Giant Antlions, in an ironic twist, exhibit colony

Should You Watch It? Summer 2018 Edition

Spring 2018 Edition’s Thread

The character limit has been reached, so, for those new to the thread, please read this comment for the starting and ending details!

Without further ado, let us start our "Should You Watch It?" Summer 2018 Edition!

##Asobi Asobase

####A Perspective, courtesy of /u/AnimeEngineerYoutube:

Watch It

β€œAsobi Asobase: Cute girls doing surreal things cranked up to 11.

Three middle school girls join forces to make a club. The only problem is all three have their own version of what the club is about. In spite of this, the three girls will stop at nothing to maintain their not-actually-a-club.

Armed with an arsenal of moderately coherent gags, this anime isn’t shying away from bold jokes and employs a liberal amount of visual comedy to really drive the points home, all while poking fun at established tropes of the genre and not taking itself too seriously.

Every gag seems to raise stakes and tension, in situations where there otherwise should be none, and our three protagonists lie and manipulate to keep the worst from happening.

The downside of this mix is that the cute moments are so heavily contrasted by both the visual comedy and the almost sinister outbursts from the characters, that those few cute moments may as well not be there. If you’re here for moe, you’re outta luck.

Up for some solidly written comedy with visual gags that pokes fun of the cute girls genre? Asobi Asobase may be the show for you.”

####Another Perspective, courtesy of /u/futuristic-arrival:

Consider It

β€œIf you consider abrupt shouting to be the peak of comedy then this is the show for you! Asobi Asobase follows three high school girls, Olivia (a devious foreign student), Hanako (a salty wannabe popular girl) and Kasumi (a quiet but intimidating girl), in their quest to... pass the time together at school.

A good deal of the jokes revolve around yelling over relatively mundane occurrences and presenting the characters off model for added absurdity. If you enjoy more thought out comedic sketches then this is probably not going to rank high for you this season. To its credit it has a very lovely, simple art style (when it’s being used) and the characters are refreshing, if a little generic.

/r/anime Awards 2018 Announcement and Juror Application Thread

LINK TO THE JUROR APPLICATION

EDIT: The deadline has been extended from the original October 31 to November 4 because I forgot about the Halloween Megathread and meta thread taking up sticky slots.

Welcome back, everyone, to the 3rd Annual /r/anime Awards, the sub's yearly event to celebrate all the time we've wasted on seasonals and to argue about which one was most worth watching! We have some big changes this year based on community feedback in our surveys and ambitious plans we're trying out for the first time to increase community involvement. Like every year, our goal is to improve over what we have done previously and we think these new changes will make the awards a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

Here's a look at how things went last year: Announcement | Results | Infographic

And here's how things will work this year:

##About the Awards

The basic setup remains unchanged from previous years' but there have been some changes, mainly to nominations. As usual, the Awards will be split into Public and Jury portions. Both get to nominate shows and select separate winners, but do so through very different processes.

The Public is, well, everyone on /r/anime. This year you will select 4 nominations using a snazzy new website being developed by local tech guru /u/geo1088. It will allow you to simultaneously vote for your favorite show, movie, or character and what category you think they belong in. The nominations with the highest total votes go to the category where they received the most votes, depending on if they have enough to be nominated in that category. To give an example: If Show A got 200 votes in Comedy and 300 votes in Slice of Life it'd become a Public nomination in SoL with 500 total votes. However, if 500 is not enough to get into SoL but is enough to get in the Top 4 for Comedy, it goes there instead. The Public nominations are combined with the Jury's for a total of up to 8 which are shared between the two groups. You will then get to choose the winner in a series of voting threads that will be posted in January.

The Jury is a group of fellow users selected by the Awar

Winners (Fanart Challenge / Screencap challenge) prize
1st Prize 5x Gold, Bluray Complete Edition* & Manga Volume 7
2nd Prize 5x Gold
3rd Prize 3x Gold
4th Prize and further 1x Gold

* Region A seems to be the only Playback I could find, so as an extra I've added the manga volume 7 to it, which should be in English as a compensation for people who live in other regions. >.< Any more questions can be through a comment reply here, or a PM to my account.

So to the contestants, goodluck to you all! As we are going near to our endgame of the challenges!
