Yes, you can teach yourself Japanese to a high level outside Japan. No, it's not easy.

I've seen a few posts lately on this topic so I started typing a reply, and it got too long lol.

The gold standard for learning any language is full immersion, attending a school in that country and using it constantly in every aspect of your life. Obviously that's not possible for everyone (especially now). I'll outline a few of the resources I used to get to a near native level within a few years. There are many other paths, of course, but take what you want from my experience.

The biggest thing is time and determination. You need consistency, and at least a few hours a day. At my peak I was putting in 8+ hours a day in the summer, less during school, but you really cannot take more than one day a week off before your progress starts to deteriorate.

The backbone of your learning should probably be a textbook. There are hundreds out there, some much better than others. A good textbook will have reading, writing (with an attached workbook), and introduce grammar and sentence structu

It’s boring. I want to die. Recap of 90DF S08E06

Welcome to another 90DF recap, your weekly distraction from the utter calamity that is everything and everywhere for 2020 2: Electric Boogaloo.

Natalie is introducing Flatline Mike to fruit, while Mike tries his best to burn the house down so she’s finally warm. They sit down for an awkward side-by-side dining experience, and Natalie wonders if the faeries kidnapped Mike and left behind a tree stump to trick her. Then Mike affixes his douchebag identification charm to his ear so we know it’s truly him.

Natalie timidly brings up the possibility of a piece of furniture where she can store clothing. He doesn’t understand why she needs to unpack, since he’s going to be driving her to the airport in about a week anyway. Natalie has the same suspicion, and says she lives like she’s camping, except tents are warm. She asks if she can just put her clothes somewhere, but Mike doesn’t want to do anything that might encourage her to stay.

Let’s unpack (zing!) this: Mike didn’t even clear a d

Symbols and metaphors and allegories, oh my — MEGATHREAD

Been watching the show with my mom and the English nerds in both of us really jumped out. We’ve seen each episode about three times and made a running list of motifs we thought were interesting — no strong theories one way or another, but figured I’d compile them here. Might make some edits as the show progresses.

This is just my interpretation — not gospel. I’d love to hear y’all’s ideas in the comments and add them here.

After all, in the words of Dottie: “The devil’s in the details, Bev.”

Nature and the Natural World

There’s a lack of animals in Westview — not even a dog running around, no birds, nothing (save for Señor Scratchy). The closest thing we get are the bees at the end of E2, as well as the (magical) butterflies and the stork that happen in E3.

Butterflies are gentle and symbolize freedom. Bees are their antithesis — they live in symbiosis to assist a queen bee (much like everyone in Westview complying with Wanda’s world). Beehive hexagons and the number 6 sh

If anyone EVER tells you Prewar USA was a force for good... (A handy counter/reference)

Despite the series being a brazen critique of nationalism and unregulated capitalism, there's still a surprising amount of people unirionically agreeing with the parodies of their ideals. Today's spicy take is on how every once and awhile you'll find someone defending the Prewar United States.

Normally this is where'd I make an argument to counter this idea but... honestly I don't have to because the Fallout Wiki page for The Prewar United States Of America and the Fallout Bible passages it's citing are so unapologetic the argument makes itself.

Read the entire page for it if you have the time. Seriously. Otherwise, here are some choice quotes (all of these are direct and unedited by me beyond some bolding for emphasis and basic context in brackets):

It's been 1 year since Apple TV+ began, and I have watched every one of their shows (except the kids stuff)! Here's my ranking...[No Spoilers]

In one year, Apple TV+ has released a pretty solid slate of original material. Not including children-oriented content, Apple TV+ has released 20 series, 3 miniseries, 9 movies, and 2 talk shows. From the start, Apple has said that the goal of the content is on quality, not quantity. But…has it lived up to that?

34 - Greatness Code - Documentary

Summary: Each episode features a different athlete talking about a key moment in their careers. The show features athletes from many different sports, including basketball’s LeBron James, soccer’s Alex Morgan (sorry…footballer Alex Morgan), snowboarder Shaun White, sprinter Usain Bolt, swimmer Katie Ledecky, surfer Kelly Slater, and (American) footballer Tom Brady (who is a co-producer).

My Take: This is the easy winner for the worst thing on Apple TV+. The only good thing about this “show” is that the episodes are usually no more than 10 minutes long. The monologues by the athletes are…fine. There’s nothing you haven’t really he

Are They Innocent?

The JonBenet Ramsey Case
Are they innocent?
Friends say the Ramseys couldn't have killed JonBenet

By Lisa Levitt Ryckman
Rocky Mountain News Staff Writer © 1997, Rocky Mountain News

At first, John and Patsy Ramsey were grieving parents mourning the murder of their 6-year-old daughter.
This story is the result of more than 40 interviews with John and Patsy Ramsey's friends, family and business associates, most of whom had refused to speak with the media. The Ramseys declined to be interviewed.
For exclusive Ramsey family photos, see the Sunday, August 17 issue of the Rocky Mountain News.
At first, everyone grieved with them.
And then, everyone suspected them.
The initial outpouring of sympathy for the Ramseys after the discovery of JonBenet's bound and battered body the day after Christmas quickly turned into ugly innuendo, relentless examination and screaming supermarket tabloid headlines.
Yet no charges have been filed, and through it all the couple have mai

Content Update: A huge day for BritBox UK additions as the Kids TV expansion over-delivers, numerous surprises arrive and Sharpe headlines

I know that calling anything “huge” lends itself to exaggeration but in this case, I think it’s extremely warranted. As of my current count, we have 33 completely new additions today plus 4 more already available shows given significant expansions.

Let’s begin with Sharpe, the tent pole series of period drama television films starring Sean Bean that originally aired in 1993. Once again, the BritBox UK team has gone the organised route of presenting the films as a boxset divided into 5 series. It should be noted that this includes only the original 1993 - 1997 run and not the 2 revival films from nearly a decade later. Here is the official description:

>Sean Bean stars as Bernard Cornwell's rugged hero in these swashbuckling tales of the Napoleonic wars. As one of history's bloodiest eras rages in Spain, Sharpe rises through the British Army's ranks, romancing a few beauties along the way.

Speaking of television movies, we have 2 standout surprises today that deserve more than

The 25 Greatest Actors of the 21st Century (So Far)

Chameleons or beauties, star turns or character roles these are the performers who have outshone all others on the big screen in the last 20 years.

By Manohla Dargis and A.O. Scott Nov. 25, 2020

We are in a golden age of acting — make that platinum — as we realized when we decided to select our favorite film performers of the past 20 years. There’s no formula for choosing the best (just squabbling), and this list is both necessarily subjective and possibly scandalous in its omissions. Some of these performers are new to the scene; others have been around for decades. In making our choices, we have focused on this century and looked beyond Hollywood. And while there are certainly stars in the mix and even a smattering of Oscar winners, there are also character actors and chameleons, action heroes and art-house darlings. They’re 25 reasons we still love movies, maybe more than ever.

The Lounge guide to India in 50 books (longread)

THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS

BY ARUNDHATI ROY (1997)

Arundhati Roy’s debut novel had a dream run—a staggering international deal, the 1997 Booker Prize, and rave reviews worldwide. But even without these accolades, it remains one of the most original novels in English about India. Set in Ayemenem, a village in Kerala, the story moves between the 1960s and 1990s, tracing the lives of fraternal twins Rahel and Estha through multiple social and political upheavals. In her unique Indian English idiom, Roy transports the reader to the heart of a family saga, at once beautiful and terrifying, seething with dark secrets, caste violence and forbidden love.

The Horrific Abuse & Murder Of Child Actress Judith Barsi, Who Is Best Remembered As Ducky In "The Land Before Time"

State officials say these laws are necessary for public safety — despite no evidence that letting trans people use the bathroom for their gender identity causes public safety problems.

The charges were beyond obscure. The effort to find traces of racism in Pinker’s massive bibliography of public statements recalled the way excited Christians periodically discover the face of Jesus in tree stumps or wall mold.

We drove to Cluster in silence. I was a ball of nerves, but Sadie was a complete wreck. Her mother finally passed the day before, and her sister wasn't answering the phone. I knew very little about Mindy, only that some drama between her and the rest of Sadie’s family lead to them going no contact with her. That was years ago, long before Sadie and I had even met, and no one seemed keen on the idea of opening those old wounds, so I didn’t pry.

That was then, but under the circumstances, it was time to ask. "So..." I said, "...what made everyone cut Mindy off in the first place?" I knew she didn't want to talk about it, but I had to know at some point. Besides, I’d already proposed months before, and was curious what I'd signed up for.

At first, Sadie left my question hang in the air. Finally, she reached out and answered. "At the end of the day, it was Ryan, her husband. He introduced her to God and she jumped into their community church with both feet."

The casket was ornately decorated, painted green with detailed yellow accents and silver trim. For a group of people who had to fight so hard to get what they deserved, this was perhaps the best way that Kobra could honor Jeffrey Burr’s legacy.

Four men carried the box down a dirt path, surrounded by mourners who wore traditional Quraci attire. Food was served; stews made with the local wildlife of the mountains, served with flatbreads and fresh greens from the gardens. The people sang old hymns from their religi

2019 r/Fantasy Bingo Statistics

As I’ve done every year since the end of the 2016 Bingo, I’ve done an overly in-depth look at all the cards submitted for the 2019 Reddit Fantasy Bingo Challenge. It’s a bit later this year due to the pandemic and also, Martha Wells’s Network Effect came out and I had to read that first. Also, I am NOT an actual statistician, but I keep a lot of spreadsheets.

PRELIMINARY NOTES

Before I get into the numbers, here are some notes:

  1. I am not someone who determines of anyone gets a bingo (that’s /u/lrich1024!), so when assembling this information, I don’t question a book you may have read or where you placed it on your bingo card.
  2. To make it easier for my analysis, I followed the idea of one book per square (or up to five for short stories). If you submitted the name of a series or an omnibus volume, I took only the first book in the series or omnibus (I didn’t do this in a couple minor cases, however). If you said you read Heartstrikers by Rachel Aaron, for example, I wrot

Are They Innocent?

he JonBenet Ramsey Case

Yet no charges have been filed, and through it all the couple have main

It's been 1 year since Apple TV+ began, and I have watched every one of their shows (except the kids stuff)! Here's my ranking... [No Spoilers]

{Taibbi's new piece FULL TEXT} If it’s Not “Cancel Culture,” What Kind of Culture is it? Another long week in the all-stick, no-carrot revolution

Last Friday, over 500 students and lecturers signed a letter denouncing Harvard professor Steven Pinker. Citing five tweets and one line from a book, the signatories demanded Pinker be repudiated by the Linguistics Society of America for a history of “speaking over genuine grievances” at “the exact moment when Black and Brown people are mobilizing against systemic racism.”

The charges were beyond obscure. The effort to find traces of racism in Pinker’s massive bibliography of public statements recalled the way excited Christians periodically discover the face of Jesus in tree stumps or wall mold.

Pinker for instance is accused of having tweeted “[Police kill too many people, black and white](https://twitter.com/sapinker/status/896720

No Contact

The couple drove to Cluster in silence. Toby was a ball of nerves, but Sadie was a complete wreck. Her mother finally passed the day before, and her sister wasn't answering the phone. Toby knew very little about Mindy, only that some drama between her and the rest of Sadie’s family lead to them going no contact with her. That was years ago, long before he and Sadie had even met, and no one seemed keen on the idea of opening those old wounds, so Toby didn’t pry.

That was then, but under the circumstances, he felt it was time to ask. "So..." Toby said, "...what made everyone cut Mindy off in the first place?" He knew Sadie didn't want to talk about it, but more importantly, he had to know at some point. Besides, he’d already proposed months before, and was curious about what he'd signed up for.

At first, Sadie left his question hanging in the air. Finally, she reached out and answered. "At the end of the day, it was Ryan, her husband. He introduced her to God and she jumped into their
