What are the origins of the 'black leather and spikes' aesthetic of the S&M subculture?

I was reading about the early days of British punk rock, and they would have to go to "sex shops" or to the "gay neighborhoods" in order to acquire such sartorial items. We associate black leather and spikes with punk rock now, but back then they were incorporating it from a source that very much preexisted them.

Also, I've been reading Patti Smith's 'Just Kids', and at one point Robert Mapplethorpe started dabbling in the aesthetic (chains, black leather, etc.) beginning in the late 60s. The implication was that this aesthetic had already existed at least for some time, and was nothing new.

How far back does it go? Who came up with it? It obviously predates punk rock, not to mention the people who were active just before it got going (Patti Smith, etc.).

Too young for Folsom Street Fair?

Hi guys, I recently have been wanting to go to the Folsom street fair. I really like the gay leather subculture and I also find it hot. I am from a small town and I recently joined the military and I am close to the west coast and want to experience the Folsom Street Fair. I have my own harness, jockstrap, and I have a few military fatigue pants from our old uniforms.

I also plan on bringing regular clothes and visiting the rest of San Francisco when the fair is over.

However, I have a few concerns / questions.

Is 20 yrs old too young?

Is going alone safe?

Regarding the Quarters! Album

While I was originally going to next write a report on the appearances of the words "god", "lord", and "heaven" in these songs, I figured something out about the Quarters! album.

You see, the song The River was theorized in u/MotionInArt's series to possibly be about the wizards (term used on a shirt from the official us merch site see this link: https://bit.ly/3cAhEUI. I hope they merge with a lizard later on) just before the events of Nonagon Infinity. Now, I am going to assume you saw the part of that series where he covers this. I might make a comment summarizing the argument for this.

Now it is not universally excepted that the Venusian 2 crew becomes the wizards, but I can provide some evidence to this (it helps make the album make more sense as it gives highly circumstantial evidence to this claim.) My argument is that the wizards need to get their gamma knifes and the crocodile from somewhere. It would probably have to be demonic in some nature as that it the nature of those artifacts. Now, we also have individuals being sent directly by Satan. It is also the only time we see anyone do something like this within my knowledge. While it isn't proof, it is strong evidence and it will get stronger later.

Next, we look at the Lonely Steel Sheet Flyer. Now, it is often thought that this is about one of the Venusian ships. I agree with this. Now, the album cover does have a biplane in that section of the art and the music video for The River features a biplane with a crocodile driving it, but these problems have a simple explanation. As in The River, the person is going in and out of sleep (see the video series mentioned earlier as well as the songs Polygondwanaland and Sleep Drifter), and that this part is animated (more likely to be the asleep part), that part of The River, and the album cover, could be part of a dream that is based off of previous things but changes them in surreal ways. That was a long sentence. Honestly though, this being about what it is doesn't really add much to the lore, it is interesting to know and if something like "Steel Sheet Flyer" is used again, we will know what it means.

Now we get to the interesting stuff. In God is in the Rhythm, the final verse is

Earth by the stars/We have all come from Mars/We all know it too/We belong to the soup

which references Mars (It also references "the soup" which makes me think Gumboot Soup but as this has nothing to d

What some LGBTQ+ terms mean [Trigger Warning]

(I apologize if some of these are wrong. Please correct me if I am wrong. I spent 6+ hours trying to make sure that each one was accurate.)

Lesbian: A sexual/romantic identity used when a female is attracted to other females.

Gay: A sexual/romantic identity used when a male is attracted to other males. The term 'gay' is also used as an umbrella term for the LGBTQ+ community occasionally.

Bisexual/Bi-romantic: When a person is attracted to both genders; male and female.

Transgender/Transsexual: When a person feels uncomfortable as the gender that they were born as and decided to switch genders. From male to female, female to male, or any other. Some get surgery and take hormones to achieve this, some can never medically transition, and some find other ways to transition. No matter how trans looks on a person, they are always valid.

Heterosexual/Heteroromantic: When someone is attracted to the opposite sex. This is usually not included in the LGBTQ+ community.

Transvestite: A person who gets pleasure from dressing in the opposite gender's clothes. (Drag King/Queen, crossdresser, etc.)

Gender-fluid/Gender-queer: Someone who's gender changes. It can change from hour to hour, day to day, etc. This person can be male, female, both, neither, or any other gender depending on how they feel.

Non-binary (NB): A person who doesn't align with the binary system. They are neither male nor female. They may align more towards a third gender, or they may just have no gender. Both are perfectly fine and normal.

Genderfuck: A LGBTQ+ slang word for someone who bends gender rules. Not an insult.

Femme/Masc: Femme is a way to describe a male who acts more feminine, but is not a female. Masc is a way to describe a female who acts more masculine but is not a male (they may be referred to as tom-boys). It's usually used as a Femme boy or Masc girl.

Neutrois: Someone with a null or neutral gender.

Lipstick Lesbian: Lesbians who act traditionally feminine instead of the more masculine persona that some lesbians have.

Trigender: Very, very similar to gender fluid, except this person has exactly 3 genders. Male, female, and a form of non-binary/queer.

Agender/Non-gendered: Someone who doesn't have a gender.

Skoliosexual/Skulioromantic People who have an attraction to anyone under the umbrella of queer (NB, gender-fluid, etc.).

Hijra: A third gender typically used in South

What do you think of the LGBT+ groups?

Recently, there has been a split in the LGBT+ groups. You've got the people who think that transgender people are twisted weirdos, the people that believe that you need to have dysphoria to have a good reason to transition, the people that don't, the people who just want to stop people from treating them like trash, and the people who believe that any and every group in LGBT+ is valid.

Here's my opinion: For lesbians, gays, and bisexuals, eh. These are pretty normal. Transgender people: still basically normal, although it's probably a good idea to figure better ways on how to transition and detransition, so there's less suffering in the process. Also, I do NOT like the people that pressure others into transitioning and detransitioning, even though they are a very small minority of people frequently talking about transgender topics. That is still up to the individual. This also goes for any other group in the LGBT+ community.

Asexuals: Still normal, although yes, there are probably ten heterosexuals in the world that are doing this to faking it for attention. You will always have these sorts of people, and they're not exactly bad. Besides, the people who are faking it might suffer from Munchhausen syndrome—which causes people to fake illness and is a mental disorder itself—funnily enough—so it's still not a good idea to call them attention seekers. Intersex: weird concept, but it's definitely possible to have testosterone and two X chromosomes, so I'd say they're still normal. Non-binary: I don't really care about genders that fit or don't fit into the traditional male and female boxes, so I'd say they're also normal. Queer: I don't know what this term means.

Now we come to the relatively unknown groups of the LGBT+ community. I'm talking about these. I would say they have less evidence that they should be a valid group, but I think it's okay to treat them as such anyway, but there might be some exceptions.

Finally, we come to the few genders that I find perfectly ridiculous. I'm talking stuff like about stargender, glassgender, ecosexual, leather, and pretty much anything that ties gender and sexuality to an object. I really don't know why the

Gear fetishism?

So, I've been a mostly online participant of kink communities for a few years. I recently started being more social in BDSM groups, but I'm quickly realizing that those groups are very focused on some kind of dynamic of power (makes sense given the acronym). I am interested in this, but I'm not sure if there's a term for where my other interests fit in.

As someone who's into silicone masks and realistic disguises, I've kind of seen this overarching group of often overlapping interests that aren't specifically about a power dynamic but rather about clothing that's often associated with something cultural, or clothing that people just like wearing. Particularly for the people I know, the fetish focuses on the way gear makes you become someone else. Some popular ones would be the gear-focused parts of the leather subculture or latex/rubber. I know that both of those are strongly associated with a power dynamic, but I also know plenty of people who just like the gear. Some other common gear kinks I see are for football/sports gear, mascots and fursuits, silicone masks, zentai, and clown gear. Although a power dynamic can come into play in any one of these, I feel like the baseline is just enjoying "wearing" or "watching others wear" these kinds of gear.

Is there an overarching term for gear fetishism that isn't as specific as the leather/latex subcultures? Or does gear usually take second seat to power dynamics in kink communities?

75 Mundane Ideas to Make Your V:TM Game More Grounded

http://unitedfederationofcharles.blogspot.com/2021/04/50-mundane-details-for-vampire.html

I'm a huge fan of Vampire: The Masquerade as anyone who knows me can attest. However, minor details are often overlooked in the spirit of getting to the juicy bits of gaming. In my twenty-five years of gaming, I've created a bunch of little details that helps me make my worlds seem a little more grounded. Please feel free to suggest your own as I love these sorts of additions.

75 Mundane Details for Vampire: The Masquerade Chronicles

  1. Vampires tend to set their temperatures upward of 75 degrees in their household for comfort.

  2. Many vampires really like tropical humid and hot environments.

  3. Vampires love hot baths and showers. They often enjoy them for sexy feedings.

  4. Vampires who can afford it enjoy hot tubs and sun tanning booths. The later don't actually affect Kindred but they are vaguely enjoyable.

  5. Vampires often wear sunglasses at night, not just as a fashion statement but because they have to deliberately blink.

  6. Generally, vampires lose about 10 to 20 pounds post Embrace due to organ atrophy.

  7. Yes, Embracing is nasty ugly business with expelling undigested food. Anne Rice oddly mentioned this but most other media doesn't.

  8. Vampire mouths are the one warm part of their bodies as they produce saliva and other things necessary for working elements.

  9. This means blood popsicles are things they can and do enjoy.

  10. Even with the blush of life, food tastes terrible.

  11. Vampires can digest food with blood but they will expell the former eventually.

  12. If you have the Blush of Life and are a male, that is actually a way possible to ghoul someone. Technically, women as well. Yes, you know what I mean.

  13. The most common ways to ghoul someone are sex, Dominating them into drinking your blood, or outright explaining the process.

  14. If someone hated you before Blood Bonding them and they know, they can usually resist and it is a good way to make a Hunter or someone utterly insane.

  15. Whenever a vampire dies, the Prince of the City has a process for dealing with their ghouls. They're either sold, traded, or more often killed. This is known as the Funeral Clean-Up.

  16. Like What We Do in the Shadows, most vampires never Embrace their ghouls outside of the Giovanni, Ministry, and Tremere. This is due to familiarity breeding contempt. There is no correlation between this and the exception clans' reputations for psychotic evil.

The prologue and first chapter of my novel Lo and Behold. The main character, I realize now, is a quintessential RS boy. No, an editor hasn't torn this to pieces. The footnotes didn't copy and paste and that's probably for the best: His preference for hentai over real porn is explained, etc..

Harrison Crane Statement of Purpose

“My Own Personal Mephistopheles”

I grew up in Richmond, California, with my mom, a reforming hippie. She named me Harrison, after the dark-and-quiet one of the Fab Four. My childhood home was a turn-of-the-century El Cerrito house my mom converted to a B&B in the shadow of Albany Hill. We kept a vegan kitchen and bed and boarded old white yogis, book binders, crafts fair tourists, deadheads, drifters, Neo folk-revival bands, Haight/Ashbury pilgrims, and gutter punks like we were the first stop on the White Privilege Underground Railroad (WPUR). My mom’s B&B account on Instagram had blown up—almost a quarter of a million followers. I swore I’d wake up to find an octothorpe where she used to paint a bindi.

My childhood was sheltered in what I call the “Everything is Beautiful” bubble. Instead of praying, my mom’s crystal-adorned friends would gush about how gracious the universe was. After every meal, every act of kindness, every time a cloud got out of the way of the sun to light that silent moment after someone’s last word; we’d look at each other like there was a God, just not that icky patriarchal one. If I hadn’t been smothered by so much grace, I might have never been so desperate for darkness, so dangerously curious. I may have never thought to look behind the green door.

My friend, Grant, lived on Albany Hill in a big Brutalist house, a concrete fortress. We’d become friends after I insisted he play with me at the park one day. Then he’d invited me over and learned how deprived I was of video games, violent movies, and the Internet. He was both amused and annoyed that he made me my first batch of GMO tater tots. I was like a thawed cave boy to Grant. But we got along well.

Grant’s dad, Lars, was a stockbroker at a firm in SF, and his mom, Danika, had been a minor tennis star before she tore her meniscus in the late 80s and gave up, I guess. I couldn’t tell if the money or the fortress itself were extensions of or the source of their austerity, but they were stiff people. They didn't seem married. Lars was nice enough to me. He stopped asking questions after he found out my mom was a hippy—it was all he needed to fill in the picture as I already wore hand-knit beanies and wool socks with Tevas—but he didn’t judge me one way or the other.

My mom never kept me from going over to Grant’s. I think she knew enough about the world and people to know it was inevitable I’d break free from her utopia

[Question] Does your country have a "biker" culture?

In the United States there's a subculture based around the open road, wearing leather, being tough, riding chopper or crusier motorbikes, and comradery. Basically if you've played Cyberpunk it's like the Nomads without the being actually nomadic.

I may be describing something very popular and known to the rest of the world, but I've never heard of or seen German bikers or anything of the sort depicted in any US media.

I've seen Japan depect something vaugely similar, but it seems to be more of a gang thing rather than a lifestyle thing and they tend to use more sport bikes then choppers.

Is this just a United States thing? Or does the whole world have "biker gangs"?

V5: Vampire Casting Couch (Notable Camarilla Members Edition)

ITT: I'll be posting a cast of SPCs I have for a game set in Philadelphia. Feel free to comment, or discuss as you like. The intent here was to provide a free cast of characters. I'd also like to promote some discussion on your own cast, or how these could be turned into your own PC.

Background: For my game, Philadelphia was home to some of the oldest vampires in the new world. It made sense as Philly is an exceptionally old city by US standards. Most Princes in the city were complete puppets of the elders that called the city home. That was until the Beckoning called them away. The city was then racked with an instability it had never known, as the Anarch movement rapidly filled the power vacuum. The old prince, a Ventrue, was deposed rather quickly during the fallout and a Nosferatu came to power. He ruled through compromise for 3 straight years. He gave up territory they could not hold to Anarch Barons, and jumped up coteries. In secret he began a sort of weapons program by deputizing dozens of promising neonates and authorized them to commit diablerie on any Anarch of a lower generation than themselves. Frequently he took the field himself to secure powerful kindred for his police force to diablerize. The city now sits with several treaties in hand and a police force far more capable than their age should allow for.

Design Philosophy: All of the characters presented below tend are built loosely as Ancilla. I usually give them a 4 dot discipline, a 2 dot and a 2 for in-clan. Out of clan is optional but a dot here or there is common enough. On particularly old members, I make the spread 5/2/1 or 5/2/0. On the topic of Blood Potency, all of these cast members are at blood potency 2. The XP costs are still a little hand-wavy at this point, but not nearly as pronounced as in the Court or Primogen. I still use the simplified system for all my SPCs and continue to just modify + or - one or two dice as needed.

Notable Camarilla Members

John King

  • Ventrue
  • The Sire of William Royal and a power player in property finance throughout the city. King has a stranglehold on the Camarilla in modern nights, as he has a monopoly on development resources within the kindred society of philadelphia.
  • Many powerful camarilla members have been attempting to set up additional resources in order to side step King. Unfortunately they all seem to be met with aggressive opposition from Baron Crane.
  • John’s powers are focused primarily on Fortitude and Presen

This sub rules

Stumbled upon this sub and browsed through the whole thing. Whoo-boy this brought back some great memories.

When I was ages 13-15 I was obsessed with this type of stuff. I went all out one day and wore nothing but a leather jacket, blue jeans, white shirt, and just a shitton of pomade in my hair for my entire grade 10 year.

Going in this sub and just seeing a bunch of kids ask about what type of belt was acceptable and voicing insecurities about being poser... it brought me back to the good ol' days.

Fellas - it's not about how you dress, or how much Elvis trivia you know, or if you can name every model of Cadillac - it's about who YOU are inside.

It's cool to see younger dudes are still embracing the subculture and I'm glad this type of stuff isn't going to die.

Just have fun with it man, and stop worrying so much about if you pomp is perfect or not.

On Nedes: Part 5 - Later Tribes

Part 4: Early Tribes

____________________________________

Part 5: Later Tribes

“Falalara gardar al ki'het gora je al ne.”
“Ever-shining Guide to the weary traveller, have mercy on us.”
- Prayer for Mercy

These following tribes were developed during the late Merethic to the early First Era, according to the records of the ancient cultures that interacted with them, such as the Yokudans and Atmorans. By this time, the Ayleid Empire was prominent in Cyrod. Nedic tribes that were not enslaved were pushed out to other provinces.

-- SKYRIM --

  • Men-of-Kreath - As the Ayleids became more predominant in the Heartlands, many Nedes were forced to the northern lands, to modern-day Skyrim. One such tribe was the Men-of-Kreath. The word Kreath might come from the Nordic name of the region Falkreath, where “reath” means “run” in the geographical sense. However, through Colovian etymology, we can also suggest that “kreath” is a corruption for the Proto-Colovi word “ke’rat” which roughly translates as “of a different following/calling.” The Kreathi were a Colovi tribe that dwelled around Falkreath and the Jerall Mountain region. It was seen that only a few clans ever permanently settled, as most kept to their nomadic lifestyle in travelling around the frozen forests, herding their small broods of furred cows and mountain goats. Many who risked venturing into the modern-day region of Bruma were captured by their Ayleid oppressors. Many also didn’t risk venturing too far north, in fear of the “Northern Ayleids” (as that is what they were known back then.) Overall, they were a martial people, as it was needed to survive through the troubles of the North and South, but held their love of storytelling and exploration even during the dark times. Technologically, they were quite advanced in their methods of metallurgy. They were one of the first Nedic people to fully usher in the age of bronze weaponry and tools. Armour pieces were likely for the upper class and warriors, as most wore dense fur clothing. Archaeologists have also found fragments of ivory snow-masks around the Jerall region, which also adds to the picture of the average Kreathi fashion. Alongside herding, their tools aided them to get food by hunting the man

Clothing style affecting gameplay

Something I've been thinking about is how our clothes affect the way we're perceived by other people.

In real life, if I wear a leather jacket and combat boots, it gives me a more punk look, whereas if I wear a dress shirt and tailored pants, I look more put together and formal. This affects how other people perceive me and what kind of people I attract. It might deter certain people or the opposite.

It would be really cool if this was a feature in the game as well. Implementation could be as such:

  • Pieces could have tags that add up and give your final outfit a "label/score". For example, Doc Martens-esque boots could have the tags "goth" "punk", and if you choose other pieces with those tags, your character's final outfit will have those tags.

  • Alternatively, it would be the player's decision, so they could choose freely from a list.

How this would work in-game:

  • If a person is attracted to the specific tag that your outfit has, they will be more attracted to your character. And if they are turned off by it, the opposite would happen.

  • Paras will be more inclined to interact with other paras that have similar outfit scores to themselves, similar to subcultures in real life. Perhaps this would be more prevalent with teenagers.

  • Depending on how judgemental someone is, the person's outfit will have more of an effect on their overall opinion, whereas if someone doesn't care, it won't have any effect.

I think this could be very cool for first impressions, but it should be less important the more paras get to know each other.

Also, players should be able to toggle this feature on/off.

Am I (24M) good for dating or do I need to do more self improvement?

First of all, dating isn't an immediate priority for me. I'm a recent college graduate and for now I'm more focused on employment but I do have an opportunity that looks pretty good. I'm told I'm pretty much in first place to be considered for this position which will probably open up later in the spring or early in the summer.

But I do admit I want a girlfriend as well and once I have a stable income I want to start looking. One issue that I have is that I don't really fit into any one subculture or "category" of person very well. I would say I have aspects of nerd, metalhead, and country. Kind of a weird combo, I know, but let me explain why I say these things.

Nerd: I love science fiction and fantasy. My bedroom is full of sci-fi and fantasy books, movies and other merchandise. I'm a casual gamer and I mostly play video games for the stories and setting, but I don't take gaming too seriously. I also like creative writing and I know a lot about natural sciences (I have a lot of nature series too, mostly David Attenborough documentaries but also plenty of National Geographic and other documentaries).

Metalhead: The music that I listen to is a mixture of gothic metal, power/symphonic metal, sludge metal and doom metal, stoner rock, grunge, and some death metal. I like wearing dark clothes and have a lot of band shirts and mostly wear black leather jackets, that sort of thing. I love going to concerts and I enjoy dark poetry as well.

Country: I love the outdoors. I love hiking, fishing, swimming, and just generally exploring the wilderness, whether that's woods, caves, anything really. My ideal summer vacation is definitely spending time at the cottage. I love animals of all kinds. I have two cats, a bearded dragon, and two axolotls. I haven't gone hunting and I don't want to, and when I go fishing it's always catch and release.

Back to the dating scene, my friends have given me some words of encouragement. I've never had an actual relationship, just a few dates off of apps, but my friends have told me I'm funny, compassionate and a good listener, and really good at offering mental and emotional support. Sometimes I like to give gifts to people I care about just to let them know I'm thinking of them. My interests are a bit niche but I have a lot of things I'm interested in, so I rarely run out of things to talk about.

On the downside, I'm diagnosed with Asperger's. I'm pretty social and outgoing, and I'd say my own social skills are d

A Taxonomy of Neckbeards: Defining the Species - Vol. 3 - BY: FYREDRAEKE

Hello once again to all my fellow anthropologists and neckbeard enthusiasts! I apologize for my tardiness in submitting the next volume for your consideration and review, as I have had some difficulty in disseminating the amassed amount of data that you’ve been so kind as to submit to me. If you have yet to read Volumes 1 and 2 of this study, I strongly recommend you do so before this, as they contain information pertinent to understanding the definitions presented below. Thanks to Redd X for putting these penned works to narration, so that this knowledge can be spread to as many interested parties as possible. Once again I do apologize for any formatting or grammatical errors, as my hand is still healing, so keyboards have become a difficult obstacle to surmount.

To begin: With more accounts and information at our disposal, it has become necessary to review some aforementioned Beardicus subspecies, for with new discoveries come new theories, and thus new methods of defining these amazing creatures.

Beardicus appropriatae (redefined) - the definition proposed in Volume 1 used the example of Japanese cutlure, but it is important to note that no culture or subculture can be excluded from the possibility of appropriatae appropriation. New accounts have arisen of beards immersing themselves and gatekeeping a whole host of different cultures, subcultures, and genres, nearly always using the stereotypes poorly associated with them.

Beardicus coactore - This beard subtype is close relative of the Beardicus appropriatae , in that they find and obsess over a given genre or subject to the point of absurdity. The subspecies has developed an instinctual compulsion to collect or hoard that is so powerful it can begin shortly before adolescence. The object of this compulsion can vary widely - some select a toy that elicits nostalgia from their youth while others may choose trading cards or dolls (which Beardish linguists have discovered has several different translations: action figures, collectibles, figurines, etc.). Whatever they choose, coactorum will zealously hoard these items to exclusion of all else, decorating their dens or nests in the manner that some animals, like the bower bird will in an effort to attract a mate or gain approval and admiration from other beards. Coactorum are relatively harmless in the wild, unless the observer belongs to or has clothing or belongings that are part of its chosen obsession. It is also a poor idea to cohabitate with

Black Baccara drops new fragrance - Launching Tonight: Our Newest Fragrance Inspired By The 1990s. 90's Goth

We are so excited to announce our newest atmospheric. A long time in the making, this fragrance is the artists interpretation of the goth subculture during the 1990s in New York City.

Enter New York City in the 90s, where the goth subculture was in full swing. Our ode to the scene is a dark, mysterious journey through the accoutrements and aromatic nuances of the mid to late 90s. This head turning blend is built on a unique accord of black lipstick and violet musk. On the dry down, it reveals wisps of the finest clove cigarette smoke and a most subtle leather before settling into a violet musk with hints of clove.

Whether you were there or not, this haunting unisex perfume is ideal for anyone who marches to the beat of their own drum and likes their fragrances to do the same. Strange and unusual, yet somehow familiar, this blend is a dark and evocative head turner evocative of ghosts marauding through the basement of an abandoned cathedral.

This blend will become part of the permanent collection. It may sell out briefly during the initial launch, but it will return. During the launch, it will be available as both a 5ml bottle and a 10ml rollerball bottle. Samples will be available as a choice in the pick five or pick ten custom sample sets. A sample of this blend will also qualify for the "one free sample" choice with any order

Help me understand

Hey r/straightedge,

I am a writer and in a story I’m working on, I have a character who I want to establish as a straight edge punk. I want this to go beyond having him don a leather jacket, dye his hair purple, and sport an sXe tattoo. I want him to accurately represent this group of the punk subculture in his worldview, actions, and speech. I’ve done my own research into the history of punk, but I wanted to get an idea of where the current iteration of this subculture is at.

To that end, I want to hear from you all. What makes a straight edge punk? What do you hold important to the punk subculture? Where are the lines drawn? What are things that you struggle with within the punk ideology? What should I be aware of while I’m writing?

I don’t expect your answers to all be the same and I certainly don’t expect you all to agree. In fact, it’s great if you disagree, because there’s depth in that. I am simply hoping to better understand you so that I might properly represent you in the story I make.

Prehistory of the Dom part 2: India

Link to part 1 (Focus on the Middle East)

*Here, I have included the Dravidians as co-founders of the Indus Valley Civilisation, despite my own strong opinion that the Middle Eastern arrivals were also Dom. Sadly, I would lose credibility if I expressed my view since people don’t consider the Dom important enough to have achieved anything historically, however, the legends of various Dom subgroups clearly mention the Dom not being autochthonous of India, but having settled there in early times. The true history of the Dom in its entirety, is not to be found in any book and cannot be uncovered without taking the oral histories and origin myths of all the subgroups into careful consideration.

If you were to ask members of various Dom subgroups around the world where they originated from, you would receive many different answers. The Dom of the Levant or Bani Murrah would say their origin lies with the Bedouins, the Kawliya of Iraq would say that they are natives of Mesopotamia, and legends of ancient Egypt are still popular among various communities, as is the Israelite theory. Even among the groups in India, many believe they came from elsewhere. A large number of Muslim Dom and related communities in South Asia claim an Arab origin as descendants of Islamic figures, including the Prophet Muhammad himself, and perhaps an even larger number claim descent from Rajputs.

The latter has also been proposed for the Roma or European Romani, as well as claimed by the Banjara, Changar, Churigar and many others in South Asia. While we know that these claims of noble ancestry are often made by communities in order to improve their social standing, we cannot say that they are incorrect, each of these theories has some truth to it, often they are particularly relevant to a specific subgroup and it’s individual history. Since the subgroups all have interrelated ties, the various fragmented histories can be pieced together in order to solve the puzzle which is Dom/Gypsy history. If we take all the narratives and put them together, the results are indeed rather satisfactory, offering a greater context.

Thus we can say that the various groups were able to preserve different parts of their history, but the full version of events has long since been forgotten as it was never chronicled, and al

My (21M) alternative appearance makes meeting people who I connect with difficult.

First things first, I am thankfully not insecure about my appearance at all, and I am very comfortable with how I look and dress. I would describe myself as a bit of a punk rocker, I wear a leather jacket that I take care of like a loved one, I have long, curly hair I dye various colors, I love rings, necklaces, spiked collars, and eye liner, and although I get some stares from the older generations, I am generally pretty happy with it, and honestly, I feel like I am pretty good looking.

I developed this style because, well, it's the subculture I identify with. I love punk rock, and most other genres for that matter, I am very pro self-expression and hate gender boundaries in regard to social roles and appearance in general. But there comes with it some issues.

I am by no means a party animal. I am actually, in person, fairly mild mannered. Alcoholism runs in my family, so I don't drink, or use any substances for that matter. My hobbies mostly consist of nerdy shit, like tabletop RPGs and videogames, as well as cooking, reading, and of course playing music. Generally, I try to make sure I am a well rounded person, hobby wise. And yeah, I am known to jump in a mosh pit at a show whenever I get the opportunity, but I also like a quiet night relaxing just as much.

Here is the thing; I don't tend to attract the reserved, thoughtful people that I feel like I would be most compatible with. In fact, it's often the reverse. People just kinda assume I am gonna be inclined to be more intense than I really am, and conversations basically end when they realize that the punk dude isn't exactly their idea of an intense unstable dude. And I am not that kinky either, despite people's frequent and very awkward assumptions that I am.

So what do I do? I feel guilty that my look is false advertising, but it is what makes me happy, but I am getting sick of being a turn off for people who I feel like I would get along with, and also getting ghosted by people who realized I am not the idea of a party boyfriend that they thought I was. Are my only option to cut my hair and throw out my skinny jeans, dress in a way that more 'accurately' (emphasis on the quotes) depicts my personality, or else stay the way I wanna be at the cost of having to explain that I am not really as edgy as they think I look?

Why I don’t like the recent rise of the “grunge” and “alt” aesthetics

Don’t get me wrong here with the title, I don’t have a problem with the subculture at all, in fact, I’m a part of it. What really makes me angry though is when companies charge a lot of money for clothes/jewellery that are supposed to be alt/grunge/punk when in reality, these subcultures were born from not having a lot of money and the fashion was what they could find cheap that would piss off their parents. Many young people who are just finding these cultures are lead to believe they have to pay a tonne to look “alt” when the essence was finding cheap stuff/hand-me-downs. Leather jackets for example came from the greaser era and young punk kids could get them cheap. I feel like I’m gatekeeping but in reality it’s the opposite, I WANT people to get involved in the subcultures but I know that young kids think they need to spend a tonne and the whole “aesthetic” has become so commercialised.

Thanks for coming to my really terrible TED talk.

We need to talk about why music is more important to goth than fashion and lifestyle

I know that we talk about it a lot but I wanted to take a moment to put down several reasons why music is most important to the goth scene.

  1. Enjoying the music is not subjective. There is something called goth rock. You are a fan of it, or you are not. It's that easy. When you start looking at people and trying to decide if they're dressed goth (one of a thousand "styles" that are all fusions of other styles) or if they have a goth lifestyle or they have dark tendencies in their soul (whatever that means) then that is subjective. If you start going by subjective criteria, then you can start having people deciding that people they don't like for some reason can't have access to the scene and declaring people poseurs when they are just as much music enthusiasts as the accuser. I have seen this happen and I'm glad that the scene is largely beyond that now.
  2. Music is financially accessible. Because of the availability of music on the internet, you don't have to pay for access to the subculture. You have to pay for special clothes, make up, boots, leather bound poetry books, taxidermy crows to put on your mantle or whatever else people expect you to have for your lifestyle, and that isn't fair for people who have other financial priorities. Love of goth music allows us to have a recognizable standard that allows us to recognize and relate to each other without putting up boundaries that are impossible to cross without money.
  3. A lot of the crazy goth point nonsense is very cultural specific. For an example: goths have picnics in cemeteries. You know who else does? Millions of people in different cultures around the world. I'm from the US and I grew up hanging out in cemeteries because that is the culture from the city that I came from. We can not gauge someone's gothness by things that are not specific to goth, and a lot of death and morbidity practices that people associate with goth aren't.
  4. There are cases where people use the stereo typical aesthetics of goth as a way to display prejudices from the mainstream world, specifically racism, trans-erasure and sizeism. Taking the power away from how someone looks and focusing on music takes away the ability for people to argue such horrid and outdated things. And I feel like I shouldn't need to say this, but I still will: racism, sizeism, transphobia, homophobia, ageism, ableism, sexism and all that other nonsense do not belong in the goth community. Period. End of discussion.

[Weekend Long Read] The actor with a mind of his own: A profile of Vinayakan

He jumps out from a jeep, in a Michael Jackson hairdo, and does a quick jig. That was Vinayakan’s debut in Malayalam cinema. The 1995 Mohanlal starrer, Manthrikam, where he played a caricature of a fire dancer, who was the member of a travelling circus. Six years later, the actor resurfaced in another Mohanlal film, Onnaman (co-incidentally the same director, Thampi Kannanthanam). From there he worked for more than a decade before clinching a National Award for his performance in Kammatipaadam. A profile of actor Vinayakan, as we prepare for Thottappan’s release.

At a time when Malayalam film narratives were fastened around ‘upper’ caste, fair skinned heroes, came an indigenous talent from a Dalit community who made his first major appearance on screen as a toddy tapper in Sallapam—KalabhavanMani. Though he did make inroads into mainstream space with his sheer multi-faceted talent as a hero, Mani was largely stuck in the mould of an inconsequential sidekick (during the earlier part of his career) or villain (in the later part). He was the favourite whipping boy/helper, bodyguard, comic relief of the superstar heroes. Or he was destined to act as “abnormal” or “handicapped” – as a blind, mentally disabled, or mentally ill person, or be a black magician or alcoholic. In a career spanning over two decades, around 200 films, Mani has seldom let us down as an actor and has lit up the screen with his all-encompassing energy and powerful screen presence. But it goes without saying that Malayalam cinema remains guilty of not exploring the late actor’s potential to the hilt.

Beginnings

It doesn’t seem like much of a coincidence that another Dalit actor Vinayakan’s first major role had him share screen space as Kalabhavan Mani’s brother in Anwar Rasheed’s Chotta Mumbai (2007). For someone who was alarmingly getting bracketed as the local gunda’s sidekick, playing the waylaid Satheesan, younger brother of corrupt circle inspector Nadesan (Kalabhavan Mani), was the first instance when Vinayakan was a core element of a film.

Before that he was necessarily doing variations of the same kind of side kick villain roles. Be it Ivar (he was part of the local underworld gang) or Vellithira (in which he played the hero’s half-wit friend) (2003). Though he had better screen time in the full-length comedy, Chathikatha Chanthu, most of the jokes were on himself.

When cinema branched out from Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi, it also opened avenues for actors like Vinayaka

I seriously need advice on how to handle interactions with littles. Please help.

I’m a sir, not a daddy; I can absolutely be a kind, gentle, and loving sir… but I’m just not able to do the whole Big/little thing.

My problem is that I attract littles left and right, I have no idea why. I don’t go looking for littles, I don’t approach littles, I don’t even think I have had any particularly good interactions with littles… but to my dismay they just keep coming, wave after wave of them, clad in onesies and armed with stuffed animals of all shapes and sizes.

What really perplexes me is that I’m known as a heavy impact top in my community. I walk around dungeons with a collection of floggs, whips, chains, cains, and a grossly oversized paddle (36 in paddle + 10 inch handle, the thing is ¾ of an inch thick Mahogany).... How anyone can think that I’m looking to play stuffies and read bedtime stories is beyond me….. But here we are.

I feel particularly bad over an interaction that I had last night. A very cute and charming young lady approached me at a munch. I don’t know her, but I’ve seen her around before and I know that she has a partner. She started getting a bit flirty, which caught me off guard. I didn’t see her Daddy around so I didn’t really know how to respond at the time (I checked on Fet later and she isn’t in a relationship anymore so I’m assuming they ended it, but I’m not 100% on that.) I tried my best to respectfully reciprocate but things quickly turned very awkward, and I could tell that she wasn’t happy with my somewhat distanced responses.

I guess she was pretty determined, so she doubled down and started acting little. It started when she offered me a valentines day sticker, which I accepted as not to be rude or anything. She then started to try and make chit chat between me and her stuffie…. And this wasn’t like an ice breaker or anything; she has rules for this stuffy, it has a name and you are not to refer to it as a stuffed animal or a toy, it is for all intensive purposes a person…. This was all explained to me in a cutesy voice too.

I really didn’t know how to handle this, it was just too much too fast and in public too. I really couldn’t tell if she was trying to start a scene right then and there. Our venue has a private room and they do allow people to attend in some light fetish attire and things do get pretty raunchy at this munch (It’s a bay area bar, it’s not a typical venue, but this is not a dungeon and is far from a play friendly establishment). Thankfully, a mutual friend of ours caught on and i

hi im a baby bat and im writing a sa about the gothic subculter and i think i need some help with it, if anny of you are willing to reed it and give some tips i would love it, (keep in mind that i have dyxlexia and english is not my first langudshe ) thanks

The history of gothic culture

The gothic subculture started in the late 70 th and early 80th after the revolutionary punk movement in the 70 th. The punk scene split to post punk which is counted as one of the first gothic genres and death rock.

We are mosltly gonna fuckos on post punk now. The post punk sound is like its predecessor but it incorporates a bit more musical instrument and a darker feeling. The instruments that are used are a synth and a bit more guitares Some of the first bands that started with post punk are sioux and the banshees, the cure, sisters of mercy and joy division.

The clothing style

The gothic clothing style is notorious and often dark. We usually dress in black, leather, and customize our clothing to our liking. The clothing style isn't mandatory to be goth. You can be goth and dress in completely white clothes but i think that it's uncommon. Yes gothic people dress alternativ but our subculture is more music based then clothos.

Then there's people who just take the clothing style and call them goth but they are not those people we call e-boys or e-girls. we use a bit of makeup as well

If you call yourself goth and your a resist or homofob you are not goth follow a simerler idiology to the punks. And those are that all people should be treated the same way and no one is better than the other.

Saying “America has no culture” is wildly ignorant and out of touch with reality

Keeping things short and sweet: why the hell do people think this? Or say this?

America literally defines contemporary culture. It’s fashion, art, media, architectural movements, and interpretations of its food, it’s slang, it’s variations on the English language, it’s innovation and technology unquestionably dominate the global cultural landscape. It is a superpower, a cultural one, for a reason.

I’ve heard people try to explain it away as “historical vs pop culture” but, no. America’s cultural dominance is built on the high culture its produced, and has for centuries now. It underwent massive amounts of development on a cultural scale. It has an unbelievably tumultuous history for its age, including participation in global wars from the 1700s, rebellions and revolutions, mass immigration, civil wars, racial disputes, assassinations, and civil justice movements of all kinds. It’s the oldest lawmaking body in the world, and has the world’s oldest surviving constitution. It’s the world’s oldest federation.

On top of all this it has:

  • Created modern (not classic) democratic philosophy.

  • Hosts some of the world’s most prestigious education institutions, such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, Juilliard...

  • Has an incredibly rich literary tradition, starting right from Thomas Paine, from Emily Dickinson, to F. Scott Fitzgerald, Allen Ginsberg to Robert Frost, Edgar Allen Poe to Harper Lee, J.D. Salinger to Vladimir Nabokov, H.P. Lovecraft to Ray Bradbury, Ernest Hemingway to L. Frank Baum, Stephen King to George RR Martin, and the Harlem Renaissance...

  • It has the most GAWC ranked global cities of any country in the world.

  • Has the third highest amount, among countries, of 3 starred Michelin restaurants in the world, has a lot of UNESCO creative cities, supports a hugely productive wine-making region, has immensely diverse regional cuisines, from Cajun to Tex-Mex and New Mexican cuisine, Low-country to New England, Mid-Atlantic and Soul Food/Creole cuisines, and a bunch of regional barbecue styles

  • It’s a world leader in the fashion industry, with New York being one of the four capitals of fashion. The US revolutionized contemporary fashion and streetwear with the adoption of blue jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, leather jackets, sportswear, etc, as normal every day pieces, and dominates in the high-fashion industry; it’s the home of Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Coach, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Heidi Montag, Kate Spade, John Varvatos, Oscar de

75 Mundane Ideas for Vampire: The Masquerade Worldbuilding

http://unitedfederationofcharles.blogspot.com/2021/04/50-mundane-details-for-vampire.html

I'm pretty social and outgoing, and I'd say my own social skills are decent
