How do the French people feel about Immigration? Do people in France really feel as strongly about it as news reports suggest? How big of an issue is it?

We hear a lot about France in the news. And, most of the news is not terribly positive. How exactly do French people view immigration? How does the average French view immigrants? Specifically, how do the French view Islam? How big of an issue is it? I know that France (and most other European countries) are having poor economic conditions. Is this combined with anti-immigration sentiment one of the main reasons behind the rise of right wing political parties in France?

I am not from US or Europe. I m asking just out of curiosity. I don't know if these kind of questions are allowed. This is my first question on this sub.
