Geology Question: What is the difference between a plate boundary and a fault.

I am trying to wrap my mind around the difference between a plate boundary and a fault line. Obviously a plate boundary is where two tectonic plates meet, collide, pull apart, or slide past each other. Is it that the stress forces involved near these plate boundaries cause cracks (faults) in Earth's Crust in the surrounding region or is there more to it than that?

Perhaps someone could give me an analogy and/or use the San Andreas fault system as example?

Thanks!
