Dictation machine using AutoVoice.

My objective is voice-driven typing on my Linux PC. When I say something, Tasker and AutoVoice running on my S7 send its text via ssh to be executed on my Linux PC, which injects the text into the AutoVoice buffer of Emacs. Speech synthesis echoes what was received for my amusement. The magic word Undo removes the injected text if I find a mistake.

I'm using the wonderful Google Chrome AutoVoice extension to get continuous listening without battery drain and to get a better microphone. I also have an S4 mini I can talk into and have stuff happen.

What's really neat is that this all works even when the S7 screen goes off ... but I can't get AutoVoice to wake the S7 when I start a session of using this ramshackle thing I've built. Thoughts?

Questions about flipping dictating machines.

OK so this guy on Craigs List has a real expensive dictating machine that he wants $40 for and it can fetch up to $400 on ebay or so it seems. It looks all/most of the parts (including foot pedal) are in the original packaging and he says his father used it once or twice cause he wanted the latest stuff when he was in business.

the guy is obviously saavy because he says he has about 40 things listed on CL and he's busy working his job during weekends. Says he's self employed. NOw either he's too busy to invest the time to studying ebay or he just wants to flip this thing quickly or theres a problem with the stuff. I dont want to ask him "hey why dont you sell this on ebay? although it is an obvious question.

the original listing for the machine has expired and the guy couldnt actually remember the price he had listed it for. So maybe with all the other stuff he's flipping on CL and his job he's just too busy to deal with it? or maybe not..?

What problems do I have to look out for with this stuff? How carefully should I test the items?

Most of the sellers of expensive dictating machines seem to have a parts warranty. Should I think about offering one if I intend to resell this at $400 or think lower and forget the warranty?

thank you.

A tale of two cases

This was from evening shift yesterday. Night 6/6. I walk in, assess the board, and see that I'm the only senior on my half of the ER. Two interns are typing notes, their dictation machines sitting idly gathering dust. The track board shows a critical patient in a resuscitation bay. The attending is off seeing patients. I poke my head in, and there's an elderly male (we'll call him Patient A) strapped to a BiPAP mask and practically half asleep. RT hands me a blood gas. Not good, the patient needs to be tubed. "He needs to be tubed," RT summarizes. Solid plan. Nursing staff grabs DSI drugs and the patient drifts into the K-hole with a Roc chaser. First pass success with the Glide. Drips arrive, start, and the patient doesn't move until after a central line is placed. He remains stable and makes it up to the ICU without incident. Smooth start.

Mid shift comes. I have Patient B that needs a splint for a boxer's fracture. He left after coming in for the initial injury the day before because he needed to go to work and declined splinting. Now his hand hurts worse. Shocker. He complains that it's swollen. The hematoma clearly tracks from the medial dorsum to the palm. "Do you think it's the ACE bandage that made it swell?" I think you're an impatient moron, I don't say out loud. "I think we should splint your hand." I confirm that the fracture angulation is not worse on a repeat film despite the patient going to work yesterday as a metal worker. He sits, maskless, and obliviously watches TV while I order pain meds for him. I see more patients, come back, and offer a hematoma block to make the splinting more comfortable since the pain meds I gave earlier didn't work. He agrees. I warn him it will burn at first but then his pain should subside. He agrees. Needle goes in, and a stream of expletives come out of his mouth. "Fuck you, asshole! I want to leave! I've been waiting for 4 hours!" The hostility is somewhat unexpected but nothing I can't handle. You could be Patient A, you ungrateful asshole, but I keep my mouth shut with an emotionless mask behind the solid one on my face. "I'll be right back." I tell my attending the situation, he goes to douse the flames, and comes back to tell me, "He called you a dickhead, but he agreed to be splinted. He's a turd, don't let it bother you." I take a nurse with me, splint the hand, and Patient B says, "My hand is numb now." No shit, Sherlock. I leave the room, print his discharge, and hand it to the

Long voicemail?

I need to be able to record 30min voicemails. I am editing a news column for an older writer, and he wants to be able to call a number and dictate the column to me, for up to 30 minutes. My voicemail has a limit of 3 minutes, as does google voice. Is there some kind of long time limit voice mail?

I know he could send me voice memos, however he is in his 80s and nearly blind, so that would be very difficult for him. Also, he doesn't want to use a dictation machine or voice recorder, he wants to be able to call a number, and talk for a half hour straight. I have searched, but its such a specific thing that I am not finding anything super helpful on google. Any suggestions would be SO greatly appriciated.

One of my most used profiles depends on Google Assistant reacting to the OK Google hotphrase - Assistant is killed and AutoVoice Recognise takes over. I made a dictation machine.

It's all changed. (I'm in the UK). Google has become like Alexa, she's gone all chatty and nothing appears on screen.

She says "Hello there how can I be of service"

That's happening with my profile enabled.. Plus I have to say "OK Google" twice.

I have an S7, Oreo, and I had hoped to dedicate it to voice control. All I want is a hotphrase to fire up AutoVoice.

[HELP] Fun and frustration with AutoVoice

AutoVoice is awesome, but the performance for terse commands can be dreadful; if you give a verbose command accuracy is very good. That's understandable because the longer the speech, the more the connections between words will refine the guess.

I've built a dictation machine where whatever I say on my phone immediately after OK google ends up in an emacs buffer on my PC. It's robust and reliable, the recognition is adequate. I thought I'd add some terse voice commands and the recognition accuracy crumbled, as expected.

I've briefly compared Alexa. She does a lot better. A fair analysis takes time, so that's anecdotal evidence and the jury is out.

Any thoughts?

In Defense of "Spock's Brain"

I saw this post on facebook and once again ended up writing too much comment for the format so moved it here. After all, providing content isn't a bad thing right? Plus it means getting to throw some love at TOS, which is something I'll probably never get tired of doing.

Anyhow, the article header is "In defense of Spock's Brain, which is not the worst 'Star Trek' episode".

To this I say it's not only "not the worst episode", it's not even actually a bad one. For my money it's one of the most underrated. Flawed, yes, but not enough to ruin it and it's bad reputation is almost entirely undeserved. To start with the "schlocky 50s B-movie" vibe isn't as strong as people claim, and there are actually solid story concepts at play here. Two of them in fact, which unfortunately is one too many. The two simply don't play well together, neither get the screen time to explore them adequately and worse, they combine in such a way that they form an unfortunate implication that I don't believe was intended. The result is an episode of missed opportunities, and the biggest sin of the episode is that it fails to reach the potential inherent in the concepts it introduces and offers a final result where the whole is less than the sum of its parts.

The script as filmed can be said to contain three primary threads, which combine to form the story.

  • Givers of Pain and Delight: Morg and Eymorg, a gender separated society who live much like Morlocks and Eloi except the women are dominant techno-Amazons who have all the power, live in an underground automated paradise and are highly intelligent and technologically advanced while the men are at their mercy and exiled to the wasteland surface living like cavemen? Yes please, that's interesting shit give me an entire story focusing on that. Here it's barely so much as introduced before it's already forgotten, because the episode simply does not have screentime to cover it, the other core concept (which was the primary one in the story) and the main plot. Since there was no time to do it justice, and it created an unfortunately sexist implication when combined with the primary concept, it should have been dropped and the premise saved for use later, especially if that meant being able to give it an entire episode to itself.
  • Quest for Brains: the main plot, at least the "omg what happened his brain is gone we have to find it!" segments, gets a lot of

Sin Eater - A person who consumes a ritual meal in order to spiritually take on the sins of a deceased person.

If only it were that simple.

My name is Eleanor Lockwood, but you can all call me Nelle. I wouldn’t call sin eating my job or anything superfluous like that. It simply is my reason for being.

My grandmother Efa Lockwood was one of the last in Wales to keep the practice going. With no mother or father to speak of and no desire for children of my own, responsibility fell to me, the unlikely descendant, to take up the mantle and keep it going.

But I will be the last, that much is certain.

People have lost touch with that aspect of the world; the traditions of days gone by, respect for the old ways and the rituals small towns and villages would undertake to safeguard their communities from wayward souls, unseen terrors and creatures of the night.

When Efa met my Grandfather Ajani, an immigrant from Jamaica, he brought with him stories of Voodoo curses, known as Obeah. Traditions held for centuries and the importance of respecting one's kin through practice. But the world was changing and when I came of age, I knew I’d need to see the wider world to bring our family talents to prominence.

That’s when I stumbled across Sturgeon. A town with a bar between places that caters to those in need, a town with a hotel sporting physical impossibilities on every floor, a town where the dead are ferried across on seaplanes and where monsters meet martial artists in a tournament of nightmares.

But what I have to tell you all today goes far, far away from that. To the outer reaches of Sturgeons eyes and finds itself situated in a maximum security prison in the middle of the most dangerous location on Earth;

The Bermuda Triangle.

I am The Last Sin Eater. And this is my story.

Dictation Complication

Hi all, first timer. I'm IT now, but this is a corker from my old job.

It was a Place of Science. We had a bench at which our incoming 'workpieces' were prepared. A very highly qualified and expensive member of staff would come in each morning for a two-hour stint of describing these workpieces while standing at the bench. The descriptions were complicated – long words and lots of Latin – so were captured by a dictation machine, the tape from which would be run through to the office afterwards and hammered into the database by our audio typists in the afternoons.

The dictation machine was a decent-in-its-day analogue Philips thing that looked like a black answering machine, and which took the same kind of little cassettes. It sat on a shelf above the bench with a mic hanging down from a wire in front of the dictator's maw, and a foot control on the floor. Everyone there was familiar with it.

I was one of the bottom-rung, assistant lay monkeys who'd sit there with the expensive guys to do all the minor things they'd worked too hard at university to do any more, like picking things up and moving them around on the bench. The rest of the staff, although largely qualified scientists, generally weren't technically adept (kindly speaking), and I'd gladly take the opportunity to make minor repairs, computer fixes etc. around the place, just for a break from the monotony of the job proper.

I came back from a couple of weeks' annual leave to a rare, barely-suppressed ecstasy from my assistant colleagues. "Thank God you're back," they said. "The dictaphone's been broken, and we've been having to take all the dictation by hand! Can you have a look at it?"

Taking this kind of dictation by hand was a serious pain in the bum, especially if spelling and such wasn't your forte. As a bonus, this was wet work, and water (plus other involved juices) doesn't go well with writing stuff, especially when you're not meant to be writing it in the first place.

I gathered the problem – the machine wouldn't record. Well, it appeared to record alright; the red light came on with the foot pedal and went off again as commanded. But when the tape was played back – nothing. A yellow business sticker caught my eye, being new and clean among the grime coating the casing. They'd sent the thing off for service to a dedicated dictaphone repair shop in the meantime, out of ideas. "They sent it back and said it was fine," I was told.

I flipped the cassette door open and felt the switch –

I work as an Exorcist, and I think that this is my last job

21/09/13

I’m not very good with words, so I don’t know where to start. I guess I’ll have to start from where my day begins.

Every morning, regardless of the state of my bristle, I shave with a straight razor. This process requires a steady hand, so my morning ritual is a perfect tell whether my nerves are still alright. It is very important in my line of work to remain 100% calm and collected at all times, and given what’s on the line I’d rather be found with my neck cut open then go into the day without being sure that I’m ready for everything. That I’m still sane.

So far, no matter what challenges I face, I’m always cleanly shaven.

I’ve always believed that I’m never paid enough, and I think you’d agree if you were me. But I get everything my clients have to offer, and usually, they’re very eager to pay up.

No, I don’t do the armed robbery. I’m an exorcist.

I already see the picture of me you’ve drawn in your mind: a man in his fifties in Catholic priest’s attire and with a somber look on his face. I must say I’m not flattered, because, first, I’m only 26, and second, I’m an atheist. In my experience, people’s beliefs can be a dangerous thing, so I try to stay away from religious themes.

You may also think that since I do not compel demons with the power of Christ I must rely on some bleeding edge tech, but that would be ridiculous. No, my equipment is quite simplistic: a compact dictation machine to record and detect ghostly whispers, an old Polaroid camera with a flash to take instant pictures, a flashlight and a small video camera which I usually use to set up an overwatch in another room. If you met me on the street you’d probably take me for a blogger.

I don’t usually encounter demons, either: mostly I have to deal with begrudged ghosts or if I’m not lucky, an evil spirit that has settled down in someone’s house. Four times out of five my clients are people who just moved in into a new place to find out that it is haunted by someone who lived there long ago.

The first thing I do when I meet my clients is I asking why can’t they just move out: ghosts are usually bound to places they haunt. In that regard they are a lot like cats, so unless their grudge is personal, they won’t follow you when you leave. Suggesting to just pack up and leave may hurt my business, but I just can’t avoid the painful obviousness of such question. Usually, the answer is that they’ve inherited that place, or have financial problem

Best speech to text table microphone?

With the service amberscript I automatically transform speech into text with their AI enabled speech recognition engines. In addition to ambient noise, accents and people talking through each other, I notice that the microphone used is a big factor in how well the technology works. A few tests provide me with the following results:

Microphone Word Error Rate (how many words are wrong, lower is better)

Audiofile 1 Lavalier with Xiaomi MI5 20%

Audiofile 2 Olympus DM-720 direct 21.80%

Audiofile 3 Lavalier with iPhone 7 16.30%

Audiofile 4 iPhone 7 direct 35.00%

Audiofile 5 iphone 7 direct 29.40%

Audiofile 5 Xiaomi MI5 direct 76.00%

Audiofile 5 Olympus DM-720 Dictation machine

with ME33 Omni microphone extension 25.70%

Audiofile 5 Dell XPS13 9350 direct 32.70%

It is difficult to compare among different audio files, but the difference in results with the same audio file (audiofile 5, so the same conversation recorded with multiple microphones) does indicate a clear difference between microphones.

I want to find the best possible microphone at the lowest possible price. I want to select one lavalier microphone and one table microphone. They must be 1) suitable for an interview and therefore for 2 people 2) preferably below 50 bucks and 3) able to be connected to a telephone (does that mean 3 rings on the jack?)

I chose the MAONO AU200 for the lavalier. It is inexpensive and able to connect both to the phone and to the camcorder, PC or DSLR (with adapter plug included), is active and delivers good quality.

For the table microphone, my eye has fallen on the audio technica ATR4697, the Blue Sky Sea and the MicW iBoundary. However, the latter is too expensive and the first two do not seem to be able to connect to a telephone (they have 1 or 2 rings on the 3.5 mm jack, or can I use an adapter for that?). Moreover, I would prefer to have a dual microphone here on the table.

What do you think is the best speech to text table microphone that I can connect to a telephone below $ 50?

Looking for music composers and lyricists for short musical film (Paid)

Hello, my name is Mikel and I am the producer of an upcoming short film called "I Dream". It's a musical and the director and I are currently looking for music composers and lyricists to help make the soundtrack for the film.

Story Summary: "I Dream tells the story of Milos, a refugee fleeing from his home country, which is deep in a civil war. One night, while camped in a makeshift refugee center, Milos wanders around the camp and ponders his fate while dreaming for more (I Dream). Milos continues to wander and finds a nearby town. He goes into a busy bar and orders a drink. Outside of the bar, The Captain of the police force arrives and smokes a cigarette. He enters the bar and orders everyone to line up and present their IDs to weed out immigrants and non-nationals. The Captain beats one man bloody and targets Milos, who hits him over the head with a beer bottle and escapes the bar (Tongue and Club (Papers Please)). The Captain pursues Milos and they engage in a physical fight, with Milos emerging as the victor. He returns back to the refugee camp with a strong inspiration to continue on (I Dream Reprise)."

Explanation:

There are two songs in the film which are important for the story. The first song is the title track, "I Dream", which also has a reprise at the very end of the film. β€œI Dream” (Plus reprise) will be considered a one package deal, aka one song. The song should be similar in theme to Father And Son – by Cat Stevens. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdMPuMeTxzY Two positions warring with each other. Folk rock-like. Milos is examining the destruction and pain around him, while looking for a reason to keep moving forward. He knows he has to keep going but still needs to process 1) the brutality and violence he’s seen and 2) where they are now & who they’ve become. You will be rewarded $400 for composing and creating lyrics for that song and its reprise.

The second one is the theme of the antagonist which will be called "Tongue and Club (Papers Please)", worth $350 for composing and creating lyrics. Very militaristic. Heavy percussion. Strong, intimidating. The example of the style/inspiration is: Good Little Dictation Machines – by Terrance Zdunich & Saar Hendleman. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ac9MbY37VpQ

Feel free to talk to me if you wish to do either of the two songs, or both. So with "I Dream" (Plus Reprise) and "Tongue and Club", you'd be able to make $750 for both songs. We currently have temporary lyrics f

Wanting free stuff and being "helpful".

For the tenants of the buildings we rent out, we do a yearly (might be once every 2 years) computer collection, basically people who want to throw out their computers we use this company and we pile it up in the loading dock, and then some company who do dispose of computers come by and collect a pile of computers. There's no data wiping, and we specifically say that in the email(s) we send out.

So on occasion we go through and maybe grab some random bits and pieces that are worth keeping. I about 2 years ago, we found a reasonable intel dualcore machine, threw a graphics card and another stick of ram could play fairly modern games.
.
So my boss is just having a quick look for anything useful, rarely is but quick a look doesn't hurt.
MaintenanceGuy3 from this story and this other story also had a look through and grabbed this laptop which my boss was there too and basically said "No, I wouldn't bother".
I didn't know about this until basically the end of this post.

A few weeks ago I got into work, open the door to my office, and there's a box of old shit. None of it looked remotely useful, I decided to ask one of the maintenance guys (a bit later).
>rings
VK: Hey MG1, there was a box of random stuff on my desk, I don't suppose you know where it came from?
MG1: Ohh yeah, MG3 thought you guys might like the bits and pieces in there, he thought that you guys might want some of it.
VK: So should we just throw out what we don't want?
MG1: Yeah, we were just getting rid of it anyway.

I don't remember most of the contents but I do remember there was a dictation machine most of the PAs seemed to have. A casset tape player which you plug headphones into, and also has a peddle (like a sewing machine) which you push down on to make it play back the audio.
.
I think there was a PS2 to USB adapter and a USB extension cable I decided were worth keeping and the rest we just tossed.

So earlier this week MG3 walks in to my office, complains about specific app for ticketing system always (doing something) and he had a Dell laptop with him.
>MG3: Hey, can you have a look at this laptop for me? I turn it on but don't get anything.
VK: No picture you mean?
MG3: Yeah, the lights turn on so it's getting power.

Completely oblivious to the fact he found this on what was considered a throw out pile. I agree to take a (quick) loo

How do I record audio for a hidden camera prank video?

I want to make prank videos yet I am clueless about some things and can't get any usable audio. I bought a jk mic-j 044 lavalier mic and used it with a Philips DVT 2000 dictation machine. The plan was to have someone film me while I record the audio separately then add things together. The result: I can hear myself, way too much background (cars birds trains etc..), and I can half hear the person I am next to. Here are my questions?

  1. What determines the quality of the audio, is it the lavalier mic itself or what I plug it into? Does it make a difference if I plug it into a zoom h1 or any cheap dictaphone?

  2. Obvious question: why am I getting such terrible audio? I want something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hEWf_YlE30 , I know this guy is using a sennheiser eb100 with a normal lav but why can't I get audio like him if I plug my lav into a normal recorder?

  3. Can you recomend an "audio kit" that will cost $300 max and get me that same audio quality? I don't care if it's wireless

Thank you!

Do you feel others of your generation are missing out on today's technological advancements? Or do you believe things such as social media are largely overrated? Yes and yes and no! If those in my generation are not using the social media they are missing out on something. But you can't blame them, it is difficult for oldsters and I could not manage it were it not for my grandson helping me every couple of weeks. And I believe the social media as they/it are presently used are overrated and underrated. There is a time and place for everything, and I sometimes think they/it are like a new child's toy. Yet I think they hasonly begun to find their use as an instrument for furthering democracy and good government. Remember Egypt and the "revolution". I fear that what we are missing today is the social glue that Robert Putnam talks about it in his book, "bowling alone" and "our kids" that talks about what we lack today in American society - two books that Walter Isaacson of the Aspen Institute says are two of the most important books published recently,
Thank you for your service. My grandfather also became a widower and has a new spouse and I was able to perform their wedding. OMG! I love the new social media - such a fascinating way to connect, yet so sterile in its ability for us to get acquainted. I love the concept of you officiating for your grandfather - I've loved seeing a grandmother officiate (non-clerically) for her grandson. And (not even fearing that my current partner will read this) I must say that love is NEVER the same. Life was different/we were each different before. I've experienced life and pleasure with Linda I never did before. Since we both lost a previous experience we appreciate joys more deeply and are endure pain more deeply tahn before.
Would you say your love for your new partner is the "same" as the love you had for your wife of 43 years? Why or why not? Regarding "thanks for my service" I must add tha

Lost my best friend

Last year I moved to Liverpool in England for work. I like living here and I’ve made a few really good friends, but the person I’ve clicked with most is Beck. Her mom’s Chinese and Nigerian and brought Beck up pretty much single handed, so they’re really close. They’re both also amazing cooks and I’ve spent a lot of time pigging out at Nans (that’s what I call Beck’s mom).

A while ago, a few tenants in my building complained about a rat problem. They were passing around this petition to everyone in the building to get the landlord to do something, since apparently the landlord told everyone to deal with it themselves last time someone complained. I never noticed or saw any critters running around, but I had heard rustling many times at night. Felt good finally knowing what it was since I’d thought it was my imagination a few times. I signed the petition, but that night I heard some serious movement/scratching in my ceiling. Seemed like the rats caught wind of the plans and were getting their affairs in order. Anyway, next day I went and bought some traps (no way I was waiting for a lazy landlord) since the noise was a bit much. I put one in my pantry and decided to put the other one in the roof. I got a chair and opened the manhole. I poked my head in, kind of expected a rat king to attack, but didn’t see much up there. I put the trap down and while I was pushing it further in, I noticed something like a little box up there. I had to go get a coat hanger to snag it with, but turns out it was an old dictation machine. Not ancient, only about a decade old and still a neat find, and it still worked. There was a cool mini cassette tape in it. Nothing recorded though. When Beck came over a day later, I showed her and she thought it was a good find. I told her it was blank and she asked if both sides were. At that time I didn’t know the cassette could be flipped, so we did just that and played it back. There was nothing at first, then a lady speaking. She said, β€˜Haven’t seen you in a while. To good. I’ll be under.’ She said that sentence two times. I thought it was funny and Beck was laughing a bit. Then the lady in the recording started speaking what sounded like French, a bit louder than before. Beck stopped the recording and said she was freaked out but I wanted to see where it was going, so I started it again. The lady switched back to English although some of it was a bit garbled, she said, β€˜There’s going to be seven hundred summers love. Do jaw(?) Bazil(

A dark alleyway. A shot rings out, then another and another. Thomas and Martha Wayne lie dead on the street and their son, Bruce, runs into the night. But this is not the world you know - there are no historic Wayne billions and no butler to raise young Bruce Wayne. Bruce survived growing up on the streets, travelled the world training his body and mind, then returned to Gotham and became the Batman, so that he could destroy the crime that had crippled his city. Now, with the rise of superheroes, Bruce finds himself on a new path, where people, both good and bad, have incredible powers, but the mission is the same. Justice.

Tim Drake, Robin, sent into the world to follow a path similar to his mentors, learning from masters, developing new skills. Master Kirigi taught him a new form of fighting, but it has been his time in Seoul that has perhaps changed him more. In the heart of a criminal gang, Tim has found friendship and even perhaps love, and tried to make the people around him better. No more bank robberies, high end theft to order. Surely that was better, right?

But I get everything my clients have to offer, and usually they’re very eager to pay up.

No, I don’t do armed robbery.

Usually, the answer is that they’ve inherited that place, or have financial problems, or
