The Spanish conquistadors led by Hernan Cortes who overthrew the Aztecs should be regarded as heroic liberators, not colonialist villains.

Aztec society was a totalitarian horror show. Even by the super low standards of the time. Their religion was a death cult based on industrial scale human sacrifice. It sure as hell wasn't the occasional thing only happening to a small number of specially raised children that people sometimes say it was.

By the time Cortes arrived, the Aztecs had already subjugated tons of nations and peoples throughout the surrounding area. The Aztecs every year would take untold numbers of captives from these various nations, take them to Tenochtitlan, and ritually slaughter them by the tens of thousands. All in all, in normal years the Aztecs slaughtered about 20,000 captives, and in some years there were special rituals where they slaughtered 80,000 all in one big ceremony. They even had a temple in Tenochtitlan made out of over a hundred thousand skulls - and that's just the one we know about!

It's no wonder that as soon as the Spanish showed up, every single other nation and tribe in the area immediately took their side to overthrow the Aztecs.

How did Spanish conquistadors communicate with the Incas?

This question can be applied to many different contacts in history but specifically today I was reading about the vile events at Cajamarca and all throughout Pizarro's time there his men seem to have communicated with the Inca a great deal, and managed to set up an elaborate meeting with them, but I was constantly wondering while reading - how did they understand each other at all? The Spaniards weren't there for a long time, the Incas had never heard of Europe, and there wasn't any nifty Quechua - Spanish dictionaries laying around at the time, and any mutual intelligibility was put down by the fact that the 2 languages have zero genetic relation to each other.

Usually I know countries coming into contact would have translators, but they can't possibly exist here, can't they?

How did the conquistadors react to native megalithic structures in the Americas when they first saw them? How did European views on race and ethnicity at the time shape their opinions?

Imagine spending your childhood pre-1492, you were taught that the world is entirely composed of three continents: Europe, Africa, and Asia. All of a sudden this entirely new landmass is β€œdiscovered” across the Atlantic, breaking centuries-long beliefs regarding geography and human history. By the time the 1520’s hit you’re probably in your 40’s, you are commissioned to embark on a voyage to this New World, there you saw Teotihuacan in all its glory, probably overgrown with weeds and vegetation after being abandoned a millennia prior.

How did the conquistadors and European intellectuals at the time react to these discoveries? We got the sophisticated political and economic system of the Inca and the intricate urban planning of the Aztecs as seen in Tenochtitlan. Surely these discoveries must have left an impression on Europeans at the time.

What unit or unit+research would you use?

For example, cavalry archers with more fire power. Or berber genitours. Or whatever.

[Question] Franck Mueller Conquistador

The overarching question I should be asking, and one that I have been asking myself, is β€œam I going insane?”.

The AD in my town has a pre-owned Franck Muller Conquistador (ref. 8000 SC) in yellow gold for a price on par with a brand new, large Cartier Santos in stainless steel (another watch that I am drawn to). I believe part of the reason why the price is lower than similar iterations I have found on Chrono24 is because it doesn’t come with its original papers. That being said, I trust this dealer has done its due diligence, as it is an authorized Franck Mueller retailer.

Am I an idiot for being attracted to this watch? For around the same price, I could choose from dozens of other watches that I really like that are arguably better value (Santos, Grand Seiko SBGA407, Omega Seamaster, JLC Master) and come from brands that are known for their ability to produce high quality movements rather than their ability to create wild looking and flashy wrist decorations like Franck Mueller. It seems to me that the brand overall has had a somewhat polarized reception on this sub, with complaints about Franck Muller watches being overpriced, gaudy, and frequently faked. All this seems reasonable to me, but for some strange reason, I’m still drawn to the more unusual shape, crazy looking Arabic numerals, and the contrast of colors on the dial with its black face, white numbers, gold hands with green inlays, and red accents.

I’m not sure whether I’m here just to talk myself though this decision or if I subconsciously want someone to talk me out of this strange desire, but either way, I’m curious to know your thoughts.

[TECH] Conquistador Auxiliary Rifle System

CAVIM, with funding gained from several profitable deals, has decided to go ahead with an expansion of its capabilities. The created subsidiary Organization, to be known as ImplementaciΓ³n y DiseΓ±o de ArtillerΓa de InfanterΓa (IDAI), has been tasked with the design of explosive ordnance to be used by our military. The teams at IDAI have, instead of going big and bold, have decided to fall back on a weapon system that has gone out of fashion as of late. Their teams have designed the "Conquistador Auxilliary Rifle System (CARS)" a rifle grenade for the modern age.

What is a Rifle Grenade?

The rifle grenade falls on a rather simple system. A specially designed grenade would be loaded into the end of the muzzle of a rifle (sometimes also integrating directly with the gas system in the case of the M1 Grand). The grenade's mass would then be propelled at a great distance by the expansion of gases caused by the firing of a bullet (normally a specially designed one). This allows several benefits over dedicated grenade platforms, rocket launchers, and standard hand grenades (with some drawbacks), with the main being versatility, the tactical advantage they provide over other dedicated platforms, and cost because who wants to waste a $100k javelin missile to take out a sniper nest when a $200 grenade will do?

How Does One Use this System?

The team's goal with the CARS was to create a near-universal muzzle break that could easily be fitted with a series of "CARS" rifle grenades. Series of these muzzle breaks will be milled to work with most-used ammunition types and platforms while allowing a universal fitting of CARS weapons. This will allow nations to utilize multiple platforms to make use of the CARS system, as well as allow the system to be compatible with any and all weapons platforms making use of threaded barrels. By simply attaching the CARS muzzle brake, the weapon becomes capable of launching any CARS system, thus adding versatility to the team and user. The CARS munition also features a tail with stabilization fins allowing for highly accurate direct/indirect fire.

The same basic principle follows most CARS ordnance, where the CARS Ordnance simply slips onto the CARS Muzzle Break. The ordnance itself follows a fairly standard pattern wherein the body takes on an almost mortar/rocket-like shape in the body towards the front with a somewhat bulbous and slidable connector that attaches the ordnance to the muzzle break via one of four connection poin

The Conquistadors: Failed expeditions

I was reading one of Stefan Zweig's books, and he mentions Spanish expeditions in which the people involved all died, disappeared into the rainforest forever, and even went native.

Is this true? I know Cortez and co were very successful, but i'm more interested in expeditions which were great failures. Any resources on this?

Love you guys as always.
