It’s almost Black Friday and I want to get into woodworking/carpentry, what do I need?

Hey there! My inbox is filled with Black Friday deals that I don’t need and I kind of want to spend my $ on something that will help me kickstart a hobby. I’m drawn to woodworking/carpentry but I’m not 100% sure where to start. Do you have any suggestions for tools or starter kits that I should check out? I think I’d really like something kit based only to have some support in the process but I’m open to all kinds of ideas. I have a hammer and a drill but that’s about it β€” maybe not prepared to carve table legs but I did successfully build a birdhouse last month. Thanks!

I have some questions about carpentry.

I'm a 17 year old in highschool and my mother wants me to go to college but I have more interest in trades. My father has done HVAC and is considered a "handy man" but his opinions (which are pretty insightful) are just coming from one person.

  1. How hard is math with carpentry?
  2. What's the general salary of a carpenter starting out? More specifically in the south. 3.Can you all give me your experiences about what you like and dislike about carpentry? You can pick any of the questions about it but Me and maybe a lot of other young men can benefit from the knowledge you'll give in this thread. Thanks πŸ‘

Carpentry dumpster diving .....

I’ve scrounged and sold/used literally tens of thousands of dollars of stuff off of construction sites and dumpsters over the years.

This morning I was walking the dog and saw a dumpster by the parsonage of a local church.

They’d apparently been demoing the original kitchen/pantry area .....

I went back with my truck and took home four, 1” x 18” x 16’, clear SYP boards that had been cabinet parts.

A few nails to pull, and a coat of paint on one side of each, but I can’t imagine where you’d find, or what you’d pay for clear, old growth, 1x18x16 SYP these days.

Starting a carpentry business, need a name!

Hi everyone.

I am looking at starting a carpentry business in the next few months. Having a hard time coming up with a business name. It seems every name I come up with is already taken.

Nailed it carpentry Precision carpentry Clean cut carpentry

All registered businesses already.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have been tossing up the idea of Thor's hammer carpentry or Viking carpentry but not sure if they seem unprofessional or not. (Mainly think the logos would be cool).

In the grand scheme of things does the name matter that much?

Would love to have something that is easy for people to remember so they can pass on my details easily.

I am in Brisbane, Australia for reference.

Should I go with carpentry?

This will probably sound stupid but I need advice.

I'm dropping out of business school, I hate it.. It's not for me.
I have no interest in just getting a job to pass the time and pay the bills I want to learn a skill, a trade, gain a qualification - work towards something.

I've done this before, I left college the first time for an electrician apprenticeship -thinking that's what I wanted.
I just found the work boring, and did not enjoy the company I was with either, I knew right away it wasn't for me but I stuck it out until it was a case of 'sign up or leave' because they legally couldn't keep me on a trial period for any more than 4 months.
So I left thinking I'd go back to college.

I don't want to make the same mistake again, I won't be going back to college any time soon.

I worked for awhile with my uncle, he's a carpenter by trade, the majority of his work is fitting flatpack kitchens, wardrobes and cabinets.

He also does some flooring too.

I worked with him and I really enjoyed it, I get on well with him and I found the work satisfying.
He lives over an hour away from me and jobs are usually further away again but I could make it work..
I could find something closer to home but the people you work with make a big difference and I know I get on well with him.

I just want to really suss out my options.

What do you think?

Anyone have experience or thoughts on starting an apprenticeship in mid twenties as a carpenter? How’s the industry, is this a crazy idea especially with Covid? I’ve read that it’s tough for mature age at the best of times due to higher wages etc.

Cabinetmaking vs. carpentry in Ontario

I'm moving to Toronto from Montreal this winter and trying to get a feel for the woodworking world in Toronto. I've got a cabinetmaking diploma and 3 years experience in shops. This summer I began working in construction as an apprentice carpenter. The pay is much better in carpentry and in Quebec it's all unionized and heavily regulated. Cabinetmaking jobs tend to be lower-paid with more responsibilities but the benefits are more stability rather than changing construction sites every few months and the work is less physical and more creative.

I'm planning on selling my car to afford the jump in cost of living in Toronto. Construction in Montreal is very dependent on having a car and driving it to different sites. Is that the case in Toronto?

I'm really interested in heritage carpentry and fine woodworking. I seem to have one foot in each door of carpentry or cabinetry. Any ideas which direction I should pursue in my new home?

Thanks!!
