  • Ontario reported 0 cases for York. I guess that's what happens when you get death ray'ed.

Throwback Ontario June 8 update: 243 New Cases, 240 Recoveries, 24 Deaths, 15,357 tests (1.58% positive), Current ICUs: 143 (+1 vs. yesterday) (-18 vs. last week)

Because there's a lot of talk about a 'fourth wave', here's a chart that shows average daily cases, deaths, ICU loads and vaccine numbers since last March. The first three variables have all been normalized as a percentage of the maximum value that they reached during the pandemic. The three waves can be characterized as:

  • Wave 1: No one knew what was going on, no widespread testing, LTCs saw a lot of deaths.
  • Wave 2: Lots of cases, lots of deaths, lots of ICUs
  • Wave 3: Lots of cases, about half as many deaths as Wave 2, lots of ICUs, but about the same 'increase' in ICUs as Wave 2.

The main difference between Wave 2 and Wave 3 was that, a few people had been vaccinated but these people were mostly, people that are at high risk of dying (70+ years old).

Wave 2 and 3 was brutal in terms of case numbers but Wave 2 ICUs were still coming in before we set off for Wave 3 so the ICU base for Wave 3 was close to the highs of Wave 2. In many ways, Wave 3 was way more widespread than Wave 2 as Wave 3 did not hit the 70+ LTC population anywhere near as hard as it did the rest of the population. Why? Because this group was vaccinated. And because Wave 3 was more widespread, ICUs increased by a bit more during Wave 3 than Wave 2 but because it started from too high of a base, we were screwed.

Whats the point I'm trying to make? If there is a fourth wave, it will be nowhere near as bad as Waves 2 and 3 in terms of deaths and hospitalizations because most of our popula

Bipartisan China bill, markets get quiet and travel restrictions ease.

One down The Senate passed an expansive bill to invest almost $250 billion in bolstering U.S. manufacturing and technology to compete with China. While both political parties got behind the cause of meeting the challenge posed by America’s biggest rival, Joe Biden’s hope for a bipartisan infrastructure package remains stymied by differences. A proposal to save the deal by a group 58 centrist House members from both parties calls for $1.2 trillion in total spending, versus the $1.7 trillion put forth by the president. The plan by the Problem Solvers Caucus emerged hours after Biden ended talks with Senator Shelley Moore Capito, a West Virginia Republican, after they failed to agree on how to pay for the ambitious project.

Retail craze, Wall Street daze As legions of retail investors are frantically bidding up meme stocks like ContextLogic, Clover Health and Clean Energy Fuels touted on Reddit, traders on Wall Street have fallen into a summer torpor that may be hard to shake until the Fed’s annual meeting in Jackson Hole. The Bank of America Merrill Lynch GFSI Market Risk indicator -- a measure of future price swings implied by options trading on equities, interest rates, currencies and commodities -- has fallen to the lowest since before the pandemic first started to roil markets.

Travel hopes Empty trading floors may be about to get even emptier. The U.S. State Department loosened travel warnings for dozens of nations including France, Canada and Germany, in a move that could ease airline restrictions for people wanting to go overseas as the pandemic wanes in developed countries. The move changes guidance for nearly 60 nations and territories from level 4, or “do not travel,” to level 3, “reconsider travel”. The advisories aren’t binding but can help airlines and other nations set their own restrictions for travel. Meanwhile the European parliament approved vaccine passports. And the EU and the U.S. are set to back a renewed push into investigating the origins of Covid-19 after conflicting assessments about where the outbreak started, according to a document seen by Bloomberg News.

Market calm Global equities are continuing to trade sideways as investors wait for Thursday’s U.S. inflation report. Overnight the MSCI Asia Pacific Index slipped 0.4% and Japan’s Topix index closed 0.3% lower. In Europe the Stoxx 600 Index was down 0.1% at 5:48 a.m. with miners the biggest losers. S&a

##Armenian soldier finds himself in Azeri territory due to thick fog

A solder crossed the border. MOD denied Azeri claims of him being a "saboteur". Armenia has contacted ECHR to ensure the soldiers' rights are respected during captivity.

Azerbaijan later interrogated him and dropped the claims that he was a saboteur. Hours later he was returned to Armenia.

The same day, the MOD launched an administrative investigation against two army Colonels. It's unclear if it's related to the fog incident.

##Electoral Commission removes/disqualifies six MP canidates

... mostly candidates from small parties asking to be removed.

The notable case was Serj's friend Mihran Poghosyan, the Panama Paper suspect who was hiding in Russia, who recently applied to become an MP in Armenia. The Commission disqualified him today on the grounds of a lengthy absence from Armenia. The police might launch a felony case after accusing him of submitting forged Moscow university documents to claim he wasn't living in Moscow but rather "studying" there, which would have qualified him for elections.

##Electoral Commission makes another ruling regarding Kocharyan's campaign posters

Recently the Commission found Kocharyan's large book ads, with his face on them, to be in violation of campaign rules. It appears the problem is not the ad itself but the large size and locations.

Since the Commission did not properly word their complaint last time, Kocharyan sued to reinstate his posters and won.

Today the Commission read a new lengthier ruling and reaffirmed its initial findings. Kocharyan's lawyer claimed the court has already made a verdict so the same incident cannot go through the second trial again.

Wall Street Week Ahead for the trading week beginning June 7th, 2021

Good Friday evening to all of you here on r/stocks. I hope everyone on this sub made out pretty nicely in the market this past week, and are ready for the new trading week ahead.

Here is everything you need to know to get you ready for the trading week beginning June 7th, 2021.

AMC, meme stocks could spark more heat in the week ahead as investors await inflation news - (Source)

> Inflation data is a highlight of the week ahead, as investors focus on economic news in the void between earnings season and the next Fed meeting.

> May’s consumer price index is scheduled to be reported Thursday, and it could be hot after it surged in April. Inflation is viewed as an important trigger that could cause the Federal Reserve to step back from its easy policies, if rising prices appear to be hotter and more persistent than expected.

> Equities were higher in the past week, but the meme stocks were far hotter. AMC Entertainment gained another 100% and was up 2,700% since January.

> Energy was the best-performing major sector, gaining more than 6.7% as oil prices jumped nearly 5% in the past week. REITs were the second-best performer, up 3.1%, followed by financials, up 1.2% and technology, also up 1.2%.

> But it’s the meme stocks that took the headlines, and also contributed to concerns about froth in the stock market.

> “People think this is new. It completely isn’t,” Dan Niles, founder of Satori Fund, said of the trading frenzy. He noted there was similar froth in individual stocks in 1999, when companies added dot-com to their names to attract investor attention.

> “What’s new is the fact that these traders are armed with stimulus checks. They can organize more easily on things like WallStreetBets, they can work from home, and there’s no-cost trading. Those are the differences,” Niles said on CNBC.

> “So, if it gets people interested in investing, that’s great. What I don’t like is when you have people sort of taking out mortgages on their home, and putting themselves at risk if the thing collapsed,” he added. “You want to be able to invest what you can afford to lose if you’re going to play in something like this.”

> Steve Massocca, managing director at Wedbush Securities, said the trading in names like GameStop and Bed Bath & Beyond is one of th

Daily Covid-19 infection rate climbs back to over 10%

34 deaths, 1,887 new cases reported in 24 hours

Bangladesh has recorded 1,887 new Covid-19 cases with an infection rate of 10.4%, taking the number of total infections to 807,867.

The daily test-positivity rate remained below 10% for four consecutive days — from Monday to Thursday — before crossing that mark again on Friday.

And with another 34 Covid-19 deaths, the death toll has jumped to 12,758.

Meanwhile, another 1,723 patients recovered from the infectious disease in a 24-hour time frame till Friday morning, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Of the 34 deceased — 20 men and 14 women — nine were from Dhaka Division, six from Chittagong, five each from Rajshahi, Khulna and Rangpur, three from Sylhet and one from Barisal.

Thirty-one of them died at different hospitals across the country while three died at home.

So far, 9,201 men (72.12%) and 3,557 women (27.88%) have died of Covid-19 in Bangladesh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected currently stands at 1.58%.

As many as 18,151 samples, including some pending ones, were tested at 509 authorized labs — government and private — across the country and 1,887 new patients were confirmed.

To date, 6,021,145 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 13.42%.

Up to this point, 747,758 patients — 92.56% of all infected — have recovered from Covid-19 across the country.

On March 8, 2020, the health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed 3,718,849 lives and infected 172,963,233 people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics.

As many as 155,691,082 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has affected 222 countries and territories across the planet

Hey Yes Fam! 💙 I have always thought of the Yes community as the most enthusiastic group of people across the world and I need your help!

I am trying to interview someone from every country on earth to make a 360° portrait of the Global Pandemic. Please help me reach everyone!

Inspired by the fact that theres a member of the Yes Fam even in Tuvalu, I just know we can reach every country! You can visit the webpage, with more about the project, and instructions here https://tillmanpress.cargo.site/Pandemic-Portrait

It only takes about 10 mins to record your submission :)

Due to Covid-19, curfews, quarantines, and similar restrictions have been implemented in numerous countries and territories around the world.Equally, for many countries life continued relatively normally. These contrasts across the planet and the opinions and stories from these countries are just as relevant to the project.I want to share the varied human experiences of the pandemic across the world.

The interviews will be recorded as voice notes so they can be recorded whenever is most convenient for you. Then I’m going to convert these recordings into visual representations to be printed into a book. The pages will be scannable with any smartphone, so these recordings will be playable online, so they will be (sort-of) anonymous

You can record in whatever language feels best to you. As a guide, I have prepared 10 prompt questions about experience, and the restrictions (or lack thereof) that you might have had to go through. The theory of this project is that with 6 degrees of separation, I should be able to find someone from every country on the planet.

So, if you have any family, friends, or friends of friends who experienced the pandemic across the globe, or know someone who might want to share their story with me, PLEASE pass this on.

[Diplomacy] The tour part two

After he met with Australia, India and Indonesia, the Foreign Minister turned his attention to the West. His first call was to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which his government was increasingly viewing as a future economic partner.

##UAE

After exchanging pleasantries with his counterpart he quickly moved into the business end of things.

  • Investment. The UAE is a very rich and powerful state which has began the process of diversifying its revenue streams via foreign direct investment (FDI). Mauritius is eager to promote international investment and thus proposes that the UAE and Mauritius begin negotiations to create a memorandum of understanding, covering financial flows and investment between the two states.

  • Air Mauritius. Air Mauritius is currently in voluntary administration as a result of the COVID-19 pandemics massive impacts on the travel industry. Air Mauritius's primary market has traditionally been trans-Indian ocean travel, from the Middle East and Africa to Asia. This is not inherently dissimilar to Etihad and Emirates, both of which are large airlines based in the UAE. The government would be extremely interested in any investment from these corporations into Air Mauritius and would be willing to take on either as a fully-fledged partner in a joint venture.

  • Travel Bubble. Given that the UAE has already agreed in principle to the creation of vaccinated citizens travel bubble we would like to formalize such an arrangement by a memorandum of understanding.

##KSA

After his call with the UAE, the Foreign Minister turned his attention to their gulf frenemy, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). First, the Foreign minister thanked the country for the support it provided during the early phase of the pandemic, before moving onto the issues at hand.

  • Investment. Much like with the UAE, Mauritius is very interested in investment from the Kingdom and would be eager to pursue an MOU outlining procedures and terms for future investments.

##France

After his call with the KSA, the Foreign Minister called his counterparts in Paris. Unlike with the Gulf states, the relationship between France and Mauritius is far older and deeper. After a comparatively short bout of pleasantries, he got down to work.

  • Maritime Security. France is a major power in the Indian Ocean and is a close neighbour, sharing a maritime border. Mauritius is interested in increasing proactive security cooperation and proposes the commencement of joint patrols withi

The Rainbow Trail

After seeing the map of people with their book rating their local area, I was inspired to write a review of the walking trail where I listened to the Anthropocene Reviewed. I sent it in to John via the email for TAR, but I thought people here might also be interested in reading it. CW: Covid-19, pandemic/lockdown discussionEnjoy!

The Rainbow Trail

To date, Australia has had 30,106 cases of COVID-19, with 901 deaths. These numbers are not to be taken lightly - every loss is a tragedy. This number could have been higher; and the fact that it isn’t is a credit to the sacrifice we all made for each other; to do our part; to stay home and to stop the spread.

Not all of Australia’s luck can be credited to our response – our relative geographic isolation from the rest of the world, our small population, and in particular, our low population density all play a part in making it more difficult for disease to spread. The government’s response to the disease has been effective; but not without fault. For example, the state of Victoria successfully returned to zero cases after a second wave – an exceptionally rare achievement that would not have been necessary were it not for the chronically ineffective process of hotel quarantine.

There have been repeated outbreaks and subsequent lockdowns throughout Australia. State borders have opened and shut so much it has been a popular subject for satire, inspiring Jimmy Ree’s YouTube series ‘Meanwhile in Australia’, wherein he depicts Australia’s states and territories arguing with each other about the pandemic, where they delight in taking the chance to ‘SHUT THE BORDEEEER!’ The catchphrase from the series now being sold on T-shirts.

Victoria has suffered more than any other state or territory, and our misfortune has also been satirized. Comedian Sammy J depicts the state and territories of Australia as a football team in his ‘government coach’ series. In one episode, the coach cuts Victoria from the team for poor performance. And Victoria’s performance has been poor – we are currently in our fourth lockdown. An outsider might wonder with so many recurring lockdowns whether they are actually effective. To this I would say, yes – lockdowns are effective; they’re just stuck in a group project with their incompetent partner, hotel quarantine, who refuses to do their share of the workload.

2020 was a difficult year for Australia. COVID-19 wasn’t the only crisis we had to manage. Bushfires raged across the country for mont

Armenian and Moldovan companies cooperated to create Armenian airlines. The Moldovan company started off small and studied the market. "We found that strangely, Armenia does not have its national carrier that can provide low-cost flights to its citizens or be part of a global network," said the Moldovan co-investor.

Armenian co-investor: with the creation of a national carrier, we hope to restore Armenia's pilot institute we had in the Soviet era. We can create aviation jobs and help our experts return and work in Armenia. We will create 135 new jobs in the first phase.

This will be a low-cost airline geared towards the general population and local businesses. It can also help tourism with low fares. No longer will you have to travel only once a year in certain directions due to high costs.

We expect to enter the market this summer. www.flyone.am or www.flyone.eu //

The airlines had earlier contacted the Armenian Civil Aviation for licensing. They imported the first Airbus A320 today.

Lakshadweep

1. Introduction

Lakshadweep is an Indian Union Territory (UT). These are parts of the country that are in part or in whole under the central government's authority. These can be so for a variety of reasons like:

  • National security like in Ladakh
  • Cultural difference from its neighbors like the previously Portuguese administered Daman and Diu or the French-administered Pondicherry
  • Political significance like Delhi

In Lakshadweep, it was done so for administrative purposes.

Today, the Administrator (A person who reports to the Central Government mind you) of the territory, Praful Khoda Patel, is facing flak for new draft legislation he proposes to pass, his handling of Covid-19, and his so-called autocratic style of functioning. This post will try to showcase all of this in an easy manner.

2. Demographic Background

Lakshadweep is a densely populated, small island territory (The smallest UT as well) with a population of 60,650. The largest inhabited island is that of Androth with a landmass of 4.9 sq. km. and a population density of 2,312 per sq. km. and the least populated island being Bitra island with 271 people with an area of 0.10 sq. km.

The island is also overwhelmingly Muslim, with an estimated 96% of people practicing Islam. They are also overwhelmingly from the category of Scheduled Tribes (STs) with 94.5% being part of it, the highest proportion in the country outside of Mizoram.

3. Beef

Beef is one of the centerpieces of this political game with Patel proposing a ban on the “selling, buying, keeping or transporting beef or beef products in addition to ban on slaughter of cows, calves, bulls or bullocks in the island.” This has elicited sharp responses due to the territory being overwhelmingly Muslim as said above.

Some highlights of the bill are given below:

· If a person is suspected of transporting beef, authorities can impound their vehicle.

· The guilty will be sentenced to no less than 10 years in prison, with it being possible for their sentence to be extended to life imprisonment.

· The fine will not be less than 1 lakh and will top out at 5 lakhs.

· All these offenses will be cognizable and non-bailable.

· The draft bill was put out for public comment on the 25th of February 2021.

4. Goondas

Patel has also proposed an anti-Goonda act. However, the crime rate in Lakshadweep is one of, if not the lowest in India. There is also an anti-Social act which one Congress leader said “Another proposed bill

SWT WiFi Wrap-Up - An Analysis of Online/Offline Player Tournament Attendance

Hey guys;

I'm going to be doing a quick overview of tournament attendance for all 112 qualifiers for the Smash World Tour - not number of tournaments attended, but player presence (and performance) at online, offline, and PGR-qualifying tournaments.

Competitors will be split up into 5 groups, seen below:

WiFi Warrior - Player never went to any offline tournament before qualifying

Local Legend - Player went to at least one offline tournament before qualifying, but never a PGR-rated tournament

Incoming Idol - Player attended a PGR-rated tournament, but did not have a notable placement*

Seasoned Smasher - Player attended a PGR-rated tournament, and had a notable placement*

Vigilant Victor - Player has won a PGR-rated tournament

* - Notable Placement is defined as: Top 8 C-tier, Top 16 B-tier, Top 32 A-Tier, or Top 64 S-Tier

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a "best player" analysis - this is simply an overview of attendance. So no, I do not think that, for example, KEN or ProtoBanham are worse players than Frido or Extra - this is simply just placements. Also, please do correct me if I get something wrong in this; I'm not perfect by any means, and I accidentally refreshed the page once already (rip) so I had to start over. (Credit to meestertweester on twitter for the full list of the attending players: https://twitter.com/MeesterTweester/status/1396679887537246214)

WiFi Warrior - 5

Kuroponzu, Kansai- The R.O.B. with highest SWT placing out of the WiFi warriors, Kuroponzu is known well on Smashmate - an online Japanese smash rating website that many top players use to practice and compete - as a top competitor, with his best placement being 6th in Season 11 over players such as KEN (8th), Gackt (9th), Tsu (19th), and T (42nd). (Extra note - the top 3 of that season was YB, Ron, and Shuton in that order).

Freetox_, France

iRefuse, Sweden

Superstriker, Belgium

xXBuntaiFan94000Xx (Midnight), SoCal

Local Legend - 21

Ichigo, New Zealand

Fryd Rice, Western Australia - The pikachu who upset Jdizzle - the #1 player in Australia - has actually never been to a PGR event. He does go to some 30-40 person locals, however, and seems to consistently place in the top 8 of them.

Omuatsu, Chugoki

HERO, Kanto - While HERO has never been to a PGR event, the first (and only?) offline tournament they attended - Kagaribi 3 - came with a 3-0 on KEN and a pla

Modi - Handling Corona like a boss and increasing India's GDP. Komiyans will defend this

Here is story,

>What's happening in Lakshadweep? A thread.

Ever since former Gujarat MoS Home Minister and Modi's close confidant Praful Khoda Patel was appointed as Administrator late last year, he has taken the following repressive measures using the pandemic as cover

1.Changed the SoP in place that had resulted in 0 covid cases in Lakshadweep in all of 2020. Cases have sky rocketed since and 317 cases were reported just yesterday. Total of 22 deaths.

  1. Arrest people who had erected anti-CAA/NRC boards earlier.

  2. Enact a Goonda Act when Lakshadweep has the lowest crime rate in the country. The people believe this is to target those protesting against union government policies.

  3. Remove non-vegetarian items from the school food menu.

  4. Promulgate a regulation criminalizing slaughter of cattle and transportation and trade of beef products. Even slaughter of other animals will require prior permission.

  5. Introduce a draft law to disqualify panchayat members with more than 2 kids.

  6. Dismiss hundreds of contract and casual workers employed by government offices. Terminate mid-day meal workers, physical education teachers etc.

  7. Close down 38 Anganwadis.

  8. Stop freight transit through Beypore port in Kerala to cut traditional ties with the state.

  9. Citing the Coast Guard Act and demolishing the temporary sheds built by fishermen to store their nets and equipments, with permission from the previous administration. This in a place where fishing is the main source of income.

  10. Lift restrictions on sale of alcohol.

  11. Propose the widening of roads in a manner in which many homes and buildings will have to be demolished. This in a place where traffic is low because the number of vehicles are less.

  12. Promote large scale private tourism ventures.

  13. All diary farms in Lakshadweep have been ordered closed and Gujarat-based Amul milk products are being forced onto the people. They have called for a boycott. Critical social media posts are being censored and internet blackout looms large.

These decisions have been taken against the wishes of the people primarily to curb the democratic rights of the ~64,000 people who live in the territory, 97% of whom are muslims.

The anti-people, undemocratic hindutva project must be resisted strongly.

Women professionals in Jammu and Kashmir: Challenges and opportunities

Women in developing countries bear the brunt of the tensions arising from a changing society with the conflict between traditional gender roles and the new narratives of empowerment along with new socio-economic exigencies setting the stage for a realm of gender relations in turmoil. India is no exception, where on one hand women are entering the workforce in steadily increasing numbers but on the other hand a shocking number of sexual and gender-based violence cases both within and outside the confines of the home point at a regressive social scenario.

Jammu and Kashmir is a region where this contrast seems to be the most striking and the Union Territory remains one of the regions with the highest female illiteracy and unemployment rate in the country. Despite this negative picture, women like Ayesha Aziz, the youngest woman pilot in the country, made the valley proud and act as an inspiration for other young women, on the basis of sheer merit and effort, not only in Jammu and Kashmir but across the country. It has to be acknowledged, therefore, that while a few women in J&K shine as the beacon of hope their achievements cannot and should not be used to hide the structural discrimination and challenges that the majority of women in the UT continue to face. These issues must be addressed and remedies must be sought with renewed urgency if the development and social justice is to be achieved.

Women and Unemployment: A persisting issue

In Jammu and Kashmir, women face a lot of challenges that stop them from entering the workforce as compared to their male counterparts or even their female counterparts in the rest of the country, leading to the percentage of unemployment in women being alarmingly higher than the women of neighbouring states. Ghulam Sarwer (2017) points to Sharma’s study (2015) that reported that the rate of unemployment in the then state of Jammu and Kashmir was 20.2%, much higher than its neighbours Punjab (5.6%), Haryana (4.8%), Delhi (4.3%) and Himachal Pradesh (2.2%). It is also a lot higher, as Sarwer rightly points out, than the national average of 3.7 percent. Not only is the UT facing a female unemployment scenario far worse than many other states in India, but there is also the troubling trend of an increasing unemployment rate among women in J&K. A study pointed out that while 2011 data showed unemployment among women in urban J&K at 19% and rural J&K at 3%, in 2015-16, the Fifth Annual Unemployment Survey

##MOD about confrontation near Sev Lake:

The situation is overall the same as of afternoon. A video was circulated yesterday showing a confrontation between Armenian and Azeri troops. It was resolved after an intervention by commanders. Sharing such videos does not help with resolving the conflict and unnecessarily contributes to keeping the high tensions.

Armenian Armed Forces fully control the situation and continue to keep Azeri servicemen blocked.

##Azeris "sent" back after another border provocation

A report arrived about a similar intrusion near Syunik's Khoznavar section, 10km east of Sev Lake.

Khozavar mayor said the incident took place last night, and that it was resolved after the intervention of Armenian forces and nearby volunteer units. "Azeris went back to their original positions. Or more accurately: we sent them," said the mayor.

The mayor denied rumors that Azeris were in the Khozavar village. "They were in the administrative district." [near the border]

The authorities reported about the incident, which happened in late May 20 when Azeris made two attempts to claim a nearby territory. A hand fight ensured, 11 soldiers were injured, the Azeris were kicked out.

Why were Azeris able to infiltrate? Do you agree with official reports that it was due to difficult terrain and snow?

Back on November 16, we [VOMA] made the list of heights that we needed to take before the Armenian withdrawal from Artsakh's Qashatagh region. There was no snow at the time but since the army was in a very difficult situation at the time, perhaps they did not have time to [make engineering work and permanent deployment] before the snowfall. Bigger is Better

We never did meet our landlords....

I suppose there were red flags, had we been paying attention. For one thing, we were told we could only tour the house at night. It was some random Wednesday evening between soccer practices for the kids.

When we toured the outside, we couldn't see much except the still darkness of the wooded back lot. At that hour we couldn't see the stagnant pond beneath the porch with its floating vole carcasses, we couldn't see the labyrinth of creeping wisteria and poison ivy entombing the back deck, and we certainly didn't see the hunter we later learned lurked at all hours in those mottled woods.

Stephanie commented on how nice it would be to finally have some privacy. And it would be, coming from our little cape cod with the shared driveway and the nosy neighbors poking over every side of the fence like regiments of zombies. And this new place was big (4,500 square feet) and surprisingly affordable. Only wrinkle was the "landlords," wanted it rented right away.

The realtor was an outwardly friendly but sad-eyed woman. She was a bit older than us, trim, perhaps in her late thirties. She said she lived next door. Said she used to be neighbors with the landlords, but that they had downsized and now rented out this monstrosity. "I'll handle all the real estate transactions and communications," she said.

Stephanie was in no mood to be choosy. And in truth, neither was I. McMansions come with their own set of punchlines, but we had outgrown our last place. And of course our children loved this new house: they ran around fighting over bedrooms and staking out future hide-and-seek territory.

A few days later we signed the lease and took possession of 2 Quimby. Or at least we thought we did....

The first few days were uneventful and I don't want to bore you with the details. We were coming from a much smaller home so we had barely enough stuff to make 2 Quimby look lived in. At night we heard strange sounds coming from the basement, but we figured we were just adjusting to the new house. We waved to our real estate agent/next door neighbor as she drove by our winding driveway in her old Volvo station wagon. And of course, we had all of our friends over to show off our upgraded but leased lifestyle.

It was the second week when things started to get noticeably weirder....

Our daughters were seven and five at the time. Not old enough to be truly useful around the house, but no longer the nuisance children can be when they are todd

##update: border intrusion in Syunik and Gegharkunik

TLDR: after the snow melted in the mountains, during the border troop placement process Azeris came forward to their positions near Syunik's Sev Lake but ended up intruding into the Armenian territory by justifying it with their fake maps.

Some soldiers were also seen in Gegharquniq province's mountain slope while their positions were supposed to be on top of the mountain. Local authorities denied later reports that had claimed further advancements and accumulation of heavy equipment.

A speculation from an isolation chamber: What the future holds for India and humanity ?

As someone observing the current situation from 100 light years away without participation, I want to share a perspective and opinion from a philosophical point of view. Humans are getting consumed by the information and content bombarded at them. With the rise of internet and smartphones, an average human spends more time staring at screen than anything else. No doubt internet has been the best invention and has accelerated the progress of mankind but it is hijacked by people to stroke their ego, manipulate other people, get a sense of achievement, irrational tribalism, channel fear, anger and frustration. While all these are very basic human traits and have existed in humans since our existence but it has now become US vs THEM. The entire world has fell in this trap and it is going to unfold into a disaster in a few months if not course corrected. I will keep my post specific to India.

  • WHERE DO YOU GO FROM HERE

** The Pandemic **

COVID-19 is out of hands, virus has taken its course and will continue to do so if not contained. Depending on the intensity of lock down the virus will spread and mutate. The excess use of plasma, sterodis, exotic drugs without any understanding by Indian population is leading the virus into unknown territory. Based on probability, the virus has gotten the best ground it can get for it to thrive, a large population giving it tons of possibilities to mutate, evolve and run it's course. I will not be surprised if vaccines become irrelevant for the strains evolved in last 6 months. Medicines, Vaccines etc are developed looking backwords not for future so it will take some time to get a grip on the current situation and virus will dictate the terms with humanity. In a worst case scenario, 10% of the population will not survive.

** The Economy **

The effect of lock down is going to impact the bottom workforce but this time it will be less harsh, It is going to impact the lower middle class more because the most impact of this lockdown will be on small businesses. The government has no sight on economy and no one should be surprised by the reactive actions of the government like a engineering student panicking on a re-exam night, The current government operate with it's complete focus on elections, every single policy is evaluated with a myopic lens of impact to the nearest elections and is always in a state of damage control. Their single agenda lies in aligning their models to maximize the vote bank and their voters hav

Taxes on crypto profits per country (updating list)

Tax liability is a major source of concern for anyone invested in Bitcoin and other digital assets.

But while some countries are putting pressure on investors and levying taxes on income and capital gains from Bitcoin transactions, many are taking a different approach—often with the aim of promoting better adoption and innovation within the crypto industry. They’ve implemented friendlier legislation, and allow investors to buy, sell, or hold digital assets with no tax liability.

I've looked up the different laws in country's about taxable events related to cryptocurrencies and listed them down below. If you're missing your country, please comment and i'll look into it. This list is a work in progress, so maybe things will change in the long run and i'll update it.

  • Argentina: Income tax based system. Any profit (from holding, trading, mining) is taxable for 15%.
  • Austria: Cryptocurrency assets are deemed an interest-bearing investment. The gained interest, as well as realised changes in value are in this case subject to the special tax rate of 27.5% in accordance with § 27a(1)of the Austrian Income Tax Act.
  • Australia: In short, cryptocurrencies are subject to capital gain tax and ordinary income tax in Australia, depending on the circumstances of the transaction. CGT is the tax you pay on the difference between the Australian Dollar (AUD) value of the disposed asset at the time of the disposition minus the AUD value of the disposed asset at the time it was acquired. If the assets have been held by an individual for more than 12 before selling, you can apply a CGT discount:

>50% for resident individuals (including partners in partnerships)
>
>33.33% for complying super funds and eligible life insurance companies
>
>50% discount is removed or reduced on capital gains made after 8 May 2012 for foreign resident individuals

  • Belarus: There's a Decree signed by the president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko to exclude digital tokens from the same regulations as applied to traditional markets in the nation. This law is in use until Jan 1, 2023.

Dear Australia: An Open Letter from the Outside World

Dear Australia,

I write to you today from Buenos Aires, Argentina, 12,284 kilometers from my birthplace, on your shiny, happy City of the Gold Coast. Alas, this will not be a shiny, happy communiqué. How I wish it were otherwise.

When I left your golden soil, girt by sea, more than two decades ago, I was proud to carry on, in my own small way, a long tradition of international travel, exploration and discovery synonymous with my fellow compatriots. Along with our Kiwi brothers and sisters, we antipodeans punched well above our weight when it came to wide-eyed wayfaring.

Over the ensuing two-plus decades “O.S.”, I’ve visited some 85 countries, calling no less than a dozen of them my “home away from home” along the way. I’ve lived in the Middle and the Far East, North and South America, worlds Old and New. From New York to Rio and old London Town, as Mr. Allen’s classic song goes, I’ve roamed far and wide.

These foreign shores I summon not to skite, not to gloat... but to remind you, my harassed and hectored countrymen, that there exists a world abroad, one that lies waiting, beyond the foam, one from which you’ve been unnecessarily, unceremoniously severed.

To put it plainly, you’ve been scammed. Hoodwinked. Given the ol’ run-around.

Your government - and by this I mean invertebrate, self-serving politicians at practically every level; federal, state and local - has led you to believe a lie: That Australia is somehow “leading the world” in the battle against COVID-19 (it is not... not by a long, long way ) and that this alleged success owes to their own paranoid, hermit-like policy of withdrawal from the world at large. (Wrong again, and worryingly so.)

However much politicians and their lickspittle lackeys in the media like to reduce COVID-19 to simple-minded sports analogies and war metaphors, the situation is vastly more complicated, infinitely more dynamic. To be sure, no single COVID-19 response or prevention measure - be it lockdowns, travel bans, vaccines, mask mandates, a Niagara of fiscal stimulus spending, etc. - comes without its own particular and attendant cost.

Some of these measures, like wearing a mask when in enclosed spaces for prolonged periods (see latest MIT study here) and listening to the science whe

Oxygen Crisis Over, Delhi To Get Vaccinated In 3 Months: Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said the capital's crippling shortage of oxygen has been resolved and announced plans to vaccinate the entire city within three months following a meeting with his cabinet ministers to discuss the crisis that has led to thousands of deaths in the past few weeks.

"Now there is no lack of oxygen in Delhi. We should have enough oxygen beds so that no patient is deprived," he said in the meeting that was attended by the Deputy Chief Minister, Health Minister, Health Secretary and District Magistrates.

Mr Kejriwal gave orders for wrapping up the vaccination drive in the city for all those eligible in the next three months to stave off a possible third wave, his office said. The District Magistrates of all districts has been asked to visit 2-4 vaccination centres daily.

With its hospitals struggling for beds and medical oxygen, Delhi has been one of the worst-hit territories as India reported an extra 15 lakh new infections and record daily deaths in the past week in the second wave of the pandemic.

For weeks, the Delhi and the central government have bickered in public and in courts over the city not getting its adequate share of medical oxygen.

The capital city recorded 335 COVID-19 deaths and 19,133 new cases even as the positivity rate dropped below 25 per cent for the first time since April 18, according to the last bulletin issued by the Delhi health department on Thursday.

The country reported another record daily rise in coronavirus cases, 4,14,188, on Friday. Deaths from COVID-19 rose by 3,915 to 2,34,083.

Medical experts say the real extent of COVID-19 in India is five to 10 times the official tallies.

India's healthcare system is crumbling under the weight of patients, with hospitals running out of beds and medical oxygen. Morgues and crematoriums can not handle the number of dead and makeshift funeral pyres burn in parks and carparks.

Since the start of the pandemic, it has reported 2.1 crore cases and 2,34,083 deaths. It currently has 36 lakh active cases.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been widely criticised for not acting sooner to suppress the second wave, after religious festivals and political rallies drew tens of thousands of people in recent weeks and became "super spreader" events.

His government has also been criticised for lifting social restrictions too soon following the first wave and for delays in the country's vaccination progra

Government chartered repatriation flights to Howard Springs for Australians returning from India will resume on May 15

07 May 2021

Prime Minister, Northern Territory Chief Minister

Government chartered repatriation flights to the Centre for National Resilience at Howard Springs for Australians returning from India will resume on May 15, after the completion of the current temporary ban on re-entry, the Morrison and Gunner Governments confirmed today.

Since the pause on flights from India commenced there has been a sustained reduction in COVID-19 positive cases originating from India in Australia’s quarantine system.

The National Security Committee of Cabinet was advised yesterday that the pause was working and that this would allow the repatriation flights to resume after May 15.

The temporary ban will remain in place until that time, as intended.

The number of COVID-19 positive cases in the Howard Springs has fallen to 21, from more than 50 cases a week ago, and positive cases associated with previous facilitated flights from India are on track to reach zero by 14 May.

Repatriation flights into the Howard Springs will resume on May 15 with one flight per 7-9 days, with an estimated 1,000 Australians returning by the end of June. Vulnerable Australians will be prioritised on these flights.

An initial repatriation flight to Darwin will leave India on May 15. Two further repatriation flights to the Northern Territory from India will be scheduled during May.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the flight pause has given the quarantine system space to operate safely and to protect Australians from the COVID-19 pandemic, with the travel pause remaining in place until May 15 with no changes.

“The global COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage outside Australia’s borders and the temporary pause on flights continues to give our quarantine facilities time to reduce infection rates and reduce the risk of COVID escaping into the community,” the Prime Minister said.

“Closing our international borders and the use of quarantine for returning Australians has protected the health of all Australians during the pandemic and given us a way of life that is the envy of the world.

“I have written to state and territory leaders to invite their participation in receiving direct repatriation flights from India over the coming weeks to further assist the efforts in Howard Springs.

“I want to thank the Gunner Government, NT Health and our AUSMAT teams for continuing to provide safe and effective quarantine facilities at Howard Springs that is the best facili

National Cabinet: Meetings to continue; Recommencement of flights from India; Passenger Caps

National Cabinet Statement

7 May 2021

The National Cabinet met today to discuss Australia’s COVID-19 response and changes to the Australian COVID-19 Vaccine Strategy.

National Cabinet continues to work together to address issues and find solutions for the health and economic consequences of COVID-19.

There have been 29,897 confirmed cases in Australia and, sadly, 910 people have died. More than 17.1 million tests have been undertaken in Australia.

Globally there have been over 155.6 million cases and sadly over 3.2 million deaths, with around 842,000 new cases and more than 13,000 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to surge in many countries around the world. Sadly in India there were more than 400,000 confirmed cases in the previous 24 hours.

Australia’s COVID-19 vaccine roll out continues to expand. To date 2,554,531 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in Australia, including 81,000 in the previous 24 hours. Around 10 per cent of the Australian adult population have now had a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, including over 30 per cent of over 70 year olds.

The number of administration sites has expanded, with more than 5,000 general practices, general practice vaccination centres, Aboriginal health services and state clinics now administering COVID-19 vaccinations.

Today, National Cabinet received a briefing from Professor Brendan Murphy, Chair of the Science and Industry Technical Advisory Group, and the Commonwealth Chief Medical Officer, Professor Paul Kelly on the vaccination program and current status of the outbreak in India.

National Cabinet agreed the imperative to work together to administer COVID-19 vaccinations to Australians as quickly as possible.

National Cabinet will return to monthly meetings. The next meeting of National Cabinet will be on Friday 4 June 2021.

Your 13-minute Wednesday report in 3270 words.

##Parliament is discussing the April 2016 war report results / What did Khachaturov negotiate in Moscow?

Yesterday we learned that the Parliament decided to hold the session behind closed doors because the report contains state secrets. The report was prepared by a bipartisan commission formed in mid-2019. Its goal was to uncover shortcomings that lead to the 2016 losses. Former leaders Serj Sargsyan, Karen Karapetyan, and other officials were questioned.

Investigative Commission chief QP Andranik: we managed to get the answers to the main questions and to examine important documents, but the picture is not complete because Yuri Khachaturov [army head at the time] refused to testify. He is the only invited person who refused to appear. We need to know what he negotiated while in Moscow.

The Commission's goal was not to find traitors. We wanted to understand the reason behind our 2016 failures. Not just issues on a surface level but in full details. Weapon shortages are normal during the war. The purpose wasn't just to find out why fuel or food ran out in certain locations.

The work done by our Commission is unprecedented with its volume. Although the report is secret, anyone with clearance can read it fully. Over time, parts of it will be declassified and made public. Parliament President Mirzoyan suggested publicizing the parts that aren't classified.

The next step is for the military and prosecutors to examine the report. It contains very important parts about armament, management, political decisions, shortcomings, and their causes.

I believe the 2020 war was the continuation of the 2016 war.

(Q: Serj claims that Armenia won the 2016 war) Serj says that he defeated Aliyev but the result of that "victory" is a violation of the 1994 ceasefire by Azerbaijan and territorial gains by Azerbaijan. So, which side won?

The reason for the defeat in 2016 was indifference, corruption, and sponsorship.

Commission member LHK chief Marukyan: those of us with security clearance already knew the root causes of the 2016 war. The Commission did extensive work but with some flaws.

The army chief CoGS Artak Davtyan was one of the culprits responsible for 2016 losses, which was repeated in the interviews given by [commission chief QP Andranik, aforementioned above]. Artak Davtyan should not be a CoGS, otherwise, this examination won't be considered impartial.

[Conflict] It's Not Colonialism, It's Protecting Our Overseas Territories

Sometime in 2034

Cayenne, French Guiana, European Federation

Unfortunately, the madmen over in Venezuela have been possessed by the likely-deceased spirit of George W. Bush and decided that it's a good time to start a war for oil in one of the most non-navigable countries in South America. Normally, we would just slap some sanctions on top of a message and say we're "concerned" -- maybe even "troubled" if it's bad enough -- by recent events, but we do happen to have a fully-integrated holding in French Guiana that is in need of protection in case the war spills all the way over Guyana, all the way over Suriname, and near our border. Therefore, we will respond in kind to Venezuelan aggression in the most European way possible -- with an aircraft carrier and air force deployment that will hopefully double as a big-ass sign that reads "STAY OUT" in all twenty-four official languages of the European Federation.

Currently, the European Federation has 2,100 soldiers stationed in French Guiana; we see no reason to increase the number of troops on the ground, but will mobilize these men and station patrols near the border with the intent of intercepting any possible spillovers into our territory and ensuring that any refugees who arrive are accounted for and taken care of. To reinforce the area, the former French flagship aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle, will be sent with an escort of two Horizon-class frigates equipped with the latest anti-missile systems, along with a Mistral-class amphibious assault ship that will serve as a hospital ship as it did during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 and 2021. The Charles de Gaulle will reinforce the Felix Eboué airport -- which also serves as a European air force base -- with its complement of 36 Dassault Rafale M multirole fighters and three E-2C Hawkeye AEW aircraft. Our hope is that these assets will not see any use, but they will remain on standby in the event that Venezuelan fighters encroach upon European territory.

Finally, the European Federation will place sanctions on all leaders of the Venezuelan

Link to report: https://files.ontario.ca/moh-covid-19-report-fr-2021-06-08.pdf (French report only today)

Detailed tables: Google Sheets mode and HTML of Sheets

Wall Street Week Ahead for the trading week beginning June 7th, 2021

Good Friday evening to all of you here on r/StockMarket.

Wow, just wow!

Two weeks ago and Vitards were high-fiving, posting gains and picking out Lambos.

Today FUD.

Fear. Uncertainty. Doubt

What the hell happened?

Is the steel and metals bull run over?

Did we go from Supercycle to Unicycle?

Where is LG and his chest pounding when you need him?

When is Vito going to stop posting cut and paste news updates (because anyone can do that) and give us some self authored hopium??

Well, here it comes and you better read every damn line of it and for the newbies - bad news, I don't TL;DR - so if you want the scoop and my two cents, you are going to have to earn it by doing something many of you have no patience for - reading.

The OG's that have been around since the infancy and flight from homeland know what to expect.

Vitard newbies - head to the medicine cabinet and grab your Adderall.

Here we go!

CHINA, CHINA, CHINA - that's what happened.

I am going to sum up the THREATS to Chinese growth, infrastructure and employment.

Fiji: Concern over high risk case

While I haven't read a lot about Bunnings and Thai Restaurants in Fiji, there are still over high risk COVID cases to cause concern. Yesterday it was announced that a security driver was of particular concern: The Fiji Times » Virus threat – Tracing intensifies amid ‘potential high risk case’

>In announcing five new cases as of mid-day yesterday, the Ministry of Health said it was seriously concerned about case 190 — a security company driver who had been working until Wednesday, May 19. The man is from the Vunimono/Nadali cluster identified on Thursday.

>The five new cases are members of an Extra Supermarket staff who live in Muanikoso, Nasinu. The ministry said the staff’s entire household placed themselves in home quarantine from May 11 and because of this “diligence”, Muanikoso would not be locked down.
>
>The statement stated one COVID-19 patient had recovered, leaving Fiji with 61 active cases in isolation facilities. Two are border quarantine cases, 49 are locally-transmitted, and 10 are under investigation to determine the source

New Zealand: Opening up to the world could require more restrictions at home

As in Australia, our Kiwi cousins are now having the debate about how to open up to the world, and largely in their case in the name of tourism. >Opening up the border to vaccinated tourists to resurrect this country's tourism industry could require Kiwis to return to life at Covid alert level 2.5.
>
>That is a future vision floated by director-general of health Dr Ashley Bloomfield when asked whether borders might open before the vaccine rollout finished - scheduled for the end of this year.
>
>If it came to fruition it could provide the financial boom that Kiwi tourism operators need. Pre-Covid, the industry was worth $40.9 billion to the economy.
>
>Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern went a step further than Bloomfield in a pre-Budget speech in Auckland yesterday**, when she talked about the possibility of having vaccinated people arriving from overseas before the rollout here was finished.**
>
>**Ardern's speech traversed territory she had not previously visited

Unfortunately, no visits to family or friends will be allowed this year: Crucial not cruel: Prohibiting Hari Raya visits is to stop spread of Covid-19, says PM | The Star

>The decision to prohibit Hari Raya visits is not a cruel one, but is instead a crucial move to prevent the spread of Covid-19, says Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
>
>In a televised Hari Raya address, Muhyiddin said the Covid-19 situation in the country had worsened with hospitals severely overwhelmed and a highly-contagious variant of the virus had been discovered within the community.
>
>"The government had to ban interstate and inter-district travel, restrict social activities and shut down the education and sports sectors.
