Barometer Soup survivor, FINAL ROUND

With 55.22% of 67 votes, "Mexico" is our next song out.

This is probably one of his best covers, and I admit that to guitar intro is fantastic. Buffett said of it, "I always loved that song... and it's a nice way to pay homage to your friends. I think the audience really likes it, too." Like it they did, as it was the only single on the album to chart.

Now we're down to two, and what a pair. I'm still not sure I've decided on my vote.

###BAREFOOT CHILDREN###

With 61.11% of 90 votes, "Barometer Soup" is our last song out.

Definitely the most painful vote of all the survivors we've done. "Barometer Soup" is the absolute perfect opening track. Calm with good energy. An open invitation to escape with JB into relaxing songs. I put the album on, hear this song, and I'm immediately transported.

Ultimately, though, "Barefoot Children" deserves this crown. Whether you hear this song and think back to your days of childhood or you see your own kids, the fantastic imagery celebrates youth in such an endearing way, at the same time embracing the passage of time with one of my favorite lines: "And wrinkles only go where the smile has been."

We couldn't have asked for two better songs to top our list. "Barometer Soup" is drawing a relaxing bath, and "Barefoot Children" is sinking yourself into it. What an amazing album!

And of course, you can now find "Barefoot Children" on the Spotify survivor champs playlist.

As always, thanks to everyone for playing along!

Tomorrow we'll start our Banana Wind album survivor, so give it a spin, choose your first victim, and check back for Round 1.

Man, am I sad to see this one go. I've never read Carl Hiaasen's Tourist Season, so I can't tell you much more than I know the song is based on it. That aside, it's absurd storytelling at its finest in Jimmy's catalogue.

But I should have known something ultimately this goofy probably wasn't going to make it deep. Which song is on the chopping block next? Let's find out. Vote here for Round 4: https://strawpoll.com/4794rfsk

Songs You Don't Know by Heart survivor, Round 11

With 30.65% of 62 votes, "The Night I Painted the Sky" is our next song out.

This ballad made an easy transition from piano and light instrumentation to guitar, and I think it works. The original was good enough to finish in fifth in our Barometer Soup survivor and sixth here, so that seems about right. It's really a great song, but it was up against some great competition on both albums.

Happy Friday, and welcome to Day 1 of our Barometer Soup album survivor.

This 1995 album has got to be one of my all-time favorites, and I'm really excited about diving in (although I expect it to get difficult very soon).

Since it's my last full day of vacation, I'm just going to keep this short and sweet.

As a reminder, we're going through each of Jimmy Buffett's studio albums one by one, each round voting on which songs to eliminate until there's only one winning track left from each album.

The silliest song on the album, for sure, but that's what I love about it. You can't help but feel goofy singing along, and you're forced to say "oh well" and go whole hog when you get to the 8th Deadly Sin. It reminds me not to take things too seriously.

So I'll try not to take this survivor too seriously. I can't remember the last time I was this out of sync with the sub. I do guess I expect that when an album is this good.

If you haven't made it to Key West before, I hope you get the chance. Blue Heaven is just one of the gems of that tourist island. The song is a good reminder to relax and take them in. Maybe a bit too jazz loungey to make it further in this survivor? But an excellent track all around.

All Stars survivor, Round 11

With 16.42% of 67 votes, "The Captain and the Kid" is our next song out.

An absolute classic song... but not the version we hold up as best. Down to Earth is not an album that gets a lot of playtime, and I don't think that's wrong. It's raw, unfocused, and lacks the tight, original storytelling that would come to define his work. "The Captain and the Kid" was the first sign of what was to come, but hey, then he went and recorded a timeless version. So... shrug.

Round 11 awaits. Vote here: https://strawpoll.com/cvz4jws9e

With 31.15% of 61 votes, "Far Side of the World" is our next song out.

I listened to this album a lot when it first came out, and then didn't for a long while. That said, I sort of forgot about the last few tracks on the album. The survivor we did for Far Side of the World reintroduced me to those songs, and I'm happy for that as they've since entered my regular rotation. In a survivor of survivors, this track wasn't going to last much longer, and I'd say it did well for itself.

I'm not saying it's the best track of the whole bunch, but there are at least six songs I'd have voted out ahead of it. "Knees" is quintessential earlier Buffett you'd have to go beyond SYKBH to discover. One of those songs I've spent my entire life listening to, but maybe I'm revealing (what I'd like to imagine as) my youth there.

Ah well, should make things easier later on.

This is an album I didn’t pay much attention to before we started these survivors. It's now made its way into my regular rotation. I believe it was a one-vote difference between this track and "Floridays." Both are fantastic songs, but "If It All Falls Down" will always hold a special place in my heart.

I've decided I'm not going to be upset about this one. I love this song, but I honestly expected it to get pummeled earlier on. Hot Water has to be one of Jimmy's least loved albums, and you only get to appreciate this song after having to listen to the whole thing. I know this departure is going to come as a disappointment to a lot of people. I think it might mean more to me personally had I heard it in the wake of Katrina. Instead, I heard it much later at a time when I didn't need it. I still go back and forth on how I feel about it, which is why it didn't place higher for me. I had to go back and listen to this song again. You want a song I don't know by heart? Here it is, from an album I hardly remember even though we voted on it just over 3 months ago. It doesn't stick out as a bad song, but it's just... a little forgettable? I don't know, I searched for it on Spotify and "Prince of Tides" came up. I rarely listen to Hot Water, and those lyrics still came straight into my head. I've got a feeling I'm going to forget today's loser before dinner.

Voting hasn't been easy, but so far I feel like I've just been brushing aside nieces and nephews. I've got maybe a round or two left before I start having to pick my own kids. Gulp.

All Stars survivor, Round 9

With 20.69% of 58 votes, "Slack Tide" is our next song out.

I struggled with this vote. Do I not love this song because I'm not listening to this album enough, or am I not listening to this album that much because I don't care for even the song we decided was best? It does have some very classic Jimmy elements, and I'm genuinely trying hard to like it. I think the opening verse leaning so heavily on clichΓ©s kind of throws me off. JB has never shied away from those, though, so I'm just not sure.

Well, enough of you agreed with me one way or the other, so we'll carry on. Vote here for Round 9: https://strawpoll.com/bwvk986vq

All Stars survivor, Round 4

With 36.31% of 67 votes, "Island Fever" is our next song out.

This elimination isn't surprising from a familiarty standpoint. The Don't Stop the Carnival survivor saw one of our first dips in participation as many people didn't know the album well enough to vote and/or couldn't bring themselves to get through the album to pick songs out. I don't blame anyone for that, but I think this song got something of an unfair hand in this survivor. When it comes up on the champs playlist, it fits right in with the rest of the songs. It's not his greatest song of all time, but I don't think it was the worst of this bunch.

Well, that's just my opinion, anyway. We've all got our own, and let's keep making them be heard in these polls. Vote here for Round 4: https://strawpoll.com/3qobdaubs

This was my first choice. Don't get me wrong, WWWEGH is a favorite in its Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes form, but this short Rancho Deluxe version is a pale ghost by comparison. I even very enjoy the musical style on Rancho, but by the time the song's over, I'm left looking around for the rest of it.

Have I mentioned we still have our tree up? Yeah, I know. See, we usually rush to get it down before having people over after the holidays, but guess what we're not doing these days. Oh well, maybe this weekend.

The nicest thing about this song is that it's the one way I might get to hear Jimmy on the radio around Christmastime. But Christmas songs aren't going to win out any best-ofs, so out the door it goes!

Maybe a round or two of easy picks left, but how long before you start picking your favorite children?

Wow. It's hard to believe we have more than 30 survivors under our belt. It's been a long journey leading us to this point, and even though there's more music yet to explore, we're at a point where we can determine the Ultimate Album Survivor.

Some notes on inclusion: In fairness to the other odds and ends we haven't taken on yet, I'll be leaving the "Featuring Jimmy" champion ("Knee Deep," Zac Brown Band) out, but the Boats, Bars, Beaches & Ballads originals seems more in line with the rest of this bunch, so "Love and Luck" is staying in.

I predict the first few rounds of this will be easy, but I also suspect it's going to get hard fast. The anticipation is delightful.

I admit that I regularly forget about this album. The songs I like best (which don’t include this title track) are all on Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads, so I don't find much reason to spin China. ###"TIN CUP CHALICE"###

With 68.33% of 60 votes, "I Have Found Me a Home" is our next song out.

I already sang this song's praises when I accidentally marked it out the last round (sorry about that!), but I'll just repeat here that I really enjoy this arrangement. It was the perfect track to open the album and set the soft, gentle acoustic tone. Starting the album here, you can immediately tell how passionate Jimmy was about this project. I for one hope that re-recording these songs reinvigorates his desire to write more introspective songs than, oh, say, "Mailbox Money."

But "Tin Cup Chalice" wears the crown. I tried to remember why this song wasn't already a champion, then I remember it got edged out by "A Pirate Looks at Forty." (Good God, is A1A an amazing album.) It will come as no surprise that this is one of my favorite songs, but I have to say that this arrangement isn't my favorite. It sounds slightly rushed. But it could definitely be that I hold the original too close to my heart! With that in mind, I'm happy to trust your judgment and crown "Tin Cup" as our champion.

And of course, you can now find "Tin Cup Chalice" on the Spotify survivor champs playlist.

###KNEE DEEP##

With 69.09% of 55 votes, "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" is our last song out.

I had a feeling the vote we swing far in this direction given how overplayed the song has been ever since it was first released. Still, based on musical merit alone, I think it's a fantastic track. I also happen to be a fan of Jackson, so that doesn't hurt. It's relatable, it's got a strong melody, and the way Jimmy and Alan riff back and forth is unforgettable.

But it's "Knee Deep" that wears our first crown of 2021. I'm not a huge Zac Brown fan, but as these things go, it's a pretty darn good song. Definitely one I'll want to hear while grilling out this summer. But seeing as y'all seem to have felt strongly about this vote, let's hear you sing its praises!

###MELE KALIKIMAKA###

With 77.5% of 40 votes, "White Christmas" is our last song out.

I love the soft guitar and the original intro on this one. It sets the tone justifies the wish for snow even in a the paradise of Key West all in JB's fun and playful way. A solid cover deserving of a high spot.

But "Mele Kalikimaka" couldn't be touched. In the end, while there were a few good covers throughout the album, this is one of those few that eclipses other versions. With Jake Shimabokuru on this track, it winds up feeling more authentically Hawaiian than the versions we're more used to hearing on the airwaves this time of year. Like "Ho Ho Ho & a Bottle of Rhum," I'm leaving this champ off the playlist in the interest of playability, but this is definitely a recording I'm looking forward to hearing more often in future holiday seasons.

As always, thank you to everyone who played along! We're going to take a break tomorrow for Christmas, but we'll be back to our Featuring Jimmy survivor on Wrestling Boxing Day before getting into Songs You Don't Know by Heart.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

###LOVE AND LUCK###

With 87.50% of 56 votes, "Take It Back" is our last song out.

Wow. Have we ever had this big of a landslide? And the whole time "Take It Back" seemed destined for the final. It's fun and carefree in a way that only a Buffett song could be. And as obvious as maybe it should have been, I had no idea it was about a yacht race to reclaim the America's Cup from the Australians. All around good stuff.

But it couldn't touch "Love and Luck"... I mean, just not even close. The rhythm, the buildup, the lyrics – everything here keeps me grinning from start to finish. I honestly forget it's just a track on a box set. A little trivia: This was the first track recorded at Shrimp Boat Sound in Key West, and Steve Winwood supposedly took time away from a fishing trip to play organ for it. In the pantheon of Jimmy's music, this song stands tall, and it's the natural and obvious choice for our champion.

And of course, you can now find "Love and Luck" on the Spotify survivor champs playlist.

As always, thanks to everyone for playing along!

Songs You Don't Know by Heart just dropped, so I want everyone to have more of a chance to listen before diving in. With that said, tomorrow, we'll start our survivor of duets and songs featuring Jimmy, so be sure to check back for that!

###WONDER WHY WE EVER GO HOME###

With 62.96% of 27 votes, "Livingston Saturday Night" is our last song out.

It's hard to say this version comes close to the one on Son of a Son of a Sailor. It's not that it's not good, per se, but knowing that the other one exists and is so much better, I can't say I have much of a desire to seek this one out.

Now, that's not to say that I wouldn't rather listen to the Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes version of our champion, but "Wonder Why We Ever Go Home" has the same tenderness and underlying energy of its other version. It's much shorter, but it comes across as short and sweet and plays well in the structure of the album. This was a hard one to pick from all around, but I think we picked right.

And of course, you can now find "Wonder Why We Ever Go Home" on the Spotify survivor champs playlist. [Went to do this and remembered that the album isn't on Spotify. Should I add the other version, or just say, "Oh well"?]

###LONE PALM###

With 63.01% of 73 votes, "Fruitcakes" is our last song out.

The song is a beautiful, talking rambling mess, perfectly suited to the overarching theme of the album. Listening to it not only helps me embrace my inner fruitcake, but also to accept the fruitcake in the crazy people I meet. A bit preachy at times? Maybe, but it's mostly fun and in good taste. Just enough in the lyrical contents to make the song slightly dated, and just enough there to make it timeless.

But that means the Fruitcakes crown goes to "Lone Palm"!

This one is the epitome of the relaxed, introspective, uplifting side of Jimmy. It's impossible to hear "Lone Palm" and not feel your everyday stress start to melt away, if only for those 4 minutes and 28 seconds. A fantastic song I'm thrilled to be adding to the Spotify survivor champs playlist.

###SLACK TIDE###

With 53.23% of 62 votes, "Book on the Shelf" is our last song out.

Wow, was this our closest final vote yet? It definitely wasn't going to be an easy decision either way.

"Book on the Shelf" is a great way of wrapping up the album. It has little nods to earlier songs on the album (including our champion), and it's introspective in a way that reveals Buffett's views on songwriting. It almost feels like a look back at his career as a songwriter, and I definitely dig that.

"Slack Tide" wears our crown, though, and it's well-deserving of it. A song of the ocean, of live-and-let-live, of relaxation and excitement all at once. These are straight-up JB vibes, and while it's not the kind of song that's going to dominate the airwaves, it's one that will reveal itself as a hidden gem to anyone who explores beyond the hits.

And of course, you can now find "Slack Tide" on the Spotify survivor champs playlist.

###BREATHE IN, BREATHE OUT, MOVE ON###

With 64.84% of 91 votes, "Bama Breeze" is our last song out.

Finally. I've been voting for this song since Round 3. Back in '06 or maybe early '07, I was still sour on Jimmy for "selling out" to mainstream country with License to Chill. I wasn't following him and didn't even know he had a new album out until I spotted Take the Weather with You on a CD rack at FYE. I picked it up, put on some headphones, and scanned it to give it a sample. This first track was enough for me, and I threw the headphones down in disgust. More stadium country, that's all it was.

Subsequently, I missed out on some really good tracks for a while, because obviously that's not what the rest of the album is. I really can't believe "Bama Breeze" made it to the final after spending so many rounds in second place.

I can say that the winning track is deserving of the crown. "Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On" is classic Buffett storytelling. It's unique, it's thought provoking, and it sticks with you. The message does feel a bit at odds with how many should have felt in the wake of the human failures that made Katrina the monumental tragedy that it was, but looking at it on the level of accepting the natural disaster it's fitting – and very well aligned with the man and weather theme that runs throughout the album. This may not have been my first choice for this survivor's champ, but it was a damn good one.

And of course, you can now find "Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On" on the Spotify survivor champs playlist.

###WINGS###

With 50.74% of 67 votes, "Nobody from Nowhere" is our last song out.

Wow, it doesn't get any closer than that!

"Nobody" is way up there when it comes to Buffett songs written by or for other artists. It's a jolly earworm with enough energy to kick the album off right, and it fits right into the vein of setting out on the road for adventure that occurs time and time again in Jimmy's music.

But by a single vote, "Wings" takes the crown. It's a great way to follow up the opening track, and it follows up the previous album with a nice callback to his cover of "Silver Wings." And I don't know about you, but a song that ties Merle Haggard, the Grateful Dead, and David Bowie references together without any sense of irony... man, that's just Jimmy. A great song about one of his greatest loves, and a great choice for the number one slot.

And of course, you can now find "Wings" on the Spotify survivor champs playlist.
