POLAR PLUNGE!! to Fight Climate Change with Chesapeake Climate Action Network! CCAN is a 501 (c) 3 org w/ EIN: 11-3644283 and 01-0879928

This past school year, my club and I have worked hard to maintain my high school's first-ever climate change club virtually. My friends and I founded it last year, and we are continuing our progress with hard work and dedication. Last year, we worked on creating our county's first public school compost program, although it did get cut short when school became virtual.

A major event that we will be participating is the annual Polar Bear Plunge. We took part in the plunge last year too and were able to raise over $3600. Most years, many climate activists run into the icy Potomac River. However, this year it will be done virtually because of COVID-19. It will take place on February 13th. My team and I are still going to plunge in the freezing water so we can experience what winter should truly feel like.

Please offer support to this cause by pledging money to my plunge campaign. All the money that my team raises will go directly to The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) to fight global warming and climate change. From making solar energy more accessible to stopping the construction of destructive pipelines, CCAN covers it all in our fight for the environment. I’m linking my plunge page here so you can donate directly to the organization to make a difference:

https://us-p2p.e-activist.com/4544/brrrrtual-polar-bear-plunge/98364/lucyylinn

The members and I have sincerely been working our very hardest to do our part in keeping the earth healthy. However, the climate crisis is not something we students can solve on our own. I am hoping that some of you will be willing to contribute to our mission. Every dollar is one step closer to our goal! Please help us #KeepWinterCold !

Can you grant money from a donor-advised fund to your own 501(c)(3)?

One of my dreams for post-retirement life is to start my own non-profit. Can I use funds from a DAF to do this?

The organization would perform legitimate charitable work, nothing shady like giving "scholarships" to relatives or anything like that. However, I would plan to devote quite a bit of time to it and might want to draw a (reasonable, market rate) salary for my efforts. Is this allowed? Any legal pitfalls to watch out for?

All private insurance should be 501(c)3 non profit

I don't believe insurance companies add any value nor is their service innovative. Their current business model, in order to be competitive involves plundering pools that are captured in order to aggressively grow into new markets for the sake of... what?

They add no value beyond what a co-op, 501(c)3 or public option can provide and regularly ruin the lives of people who cannot fight back.

I think it's past time to sundown most of their industry.

We are Multidisciplinary Academic Grants in Cryptocurrencies (MAGIC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that gives scholarships to undergraduate students and grants in support of public, permissionless cryptocurrency payment networks. AMA!

Hello Redditors!

u/jwinterm, u/scoobybejesus, and I are board members of Multidisciplinary Academic Grants in Cryptocurrencies (MAGIC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (look us up with the IRS).

MAGIC is devoted to supporting public, permissionless cryptocurrency payment networks and students who are interested in them.

Our website: https://magicgrants.org

As a recent undergraduate student (class of 2019), I found that getting a starting position in the cryptocurrency industry was less straightforward than in many other industries. MAGIC is here to support some of the brightest students early on in their careers so that they know the cryptocurrency industry is here with welcoming arms.

In 2020, we accomplished the following:

  • MAGIC applied for and received its 501(c)(3) exempt status.

  • MAGIC distributed three $1000 scholarships to undergraduate students interested in cryptocurrencies. The next scholarship round for 2020-2021 is expected to open in late Spring 2021.

  • MAGIC issued its first grant in support of public, permissionless cryptocurrency payment networks by funding Dr. Sarang Noether of the Monero Research Lab to implement Bulletproofs+ in Monero.

In 2021, we hope to achieve the following:

  • Issue three or five undergraduate scholarships.

  • Continue grants in support of public, permissionless cryptocurrency payment networks, including relevant research, development, audits, and more.

MAGIC is not focused on any particular cryptocurrency. We support the entire ecosystem to the extent possible.

Donations

We need donations to allow our mission to continue. If you can help reward students who are involved in cryptocurrencies early on, or if you want to support the security and privacy of public cryptocurrency payment infrastructure, then please consider donating.

MAGIC proudly accepts donations in cryptocurrencies. We also accept donations with debit and credit cards. If you donate in 2020 as a US taxpayer, you can take a special deduction of up to $300:

Furthermore, funds will also be used to host community events such as community givebacks, rallies, youth camps and much more. To also assist our Asian communities financially as much as possible due to the substantial decrease in business's within the Asian community, we will ALWAYS prioritize our funds to be spent with the Asian community first and foremost. The funds will be primarily be focused on the AWA Norcal and Socal chapters, but will be expanded as our movement continues to grow!

Hypothetically, would a person running a one person 501(c)(3) qualify for pslf?

I hate my job and often day dream about taking my incredibly useful knowledge and putting it to actual good use by creating a 501(c)(3) and helping people being screwed by the government. The reason this will almost certainly remain a day dream is funding - most of the people I'd be helping couldn't pay and that would kind of be the point. But it led me to think of this hypothetical - can a person serving underrepresented people call themselves a non-profit, pay themselves a fair market value salary (idk where the funds would come from in this scenario), and take advantage of pslf?

Leftist 501(c)(3) charities? My workplace is offering me matching funds

I usually advocate for going out and doing actual activism when possible, but my work is offering up to $200 matching funds when donating to charity. The requirements are that they have 501(c)(3) status and they can't be an explicitly political organization.

I would really like to divert this money from this dumb capitalist company to a needy leftist organization, but all of the places I normally work with / donate to are either explicitly political or are not 501(c)(3), and it isn't easy to find legit leftist orgs out there.

These are the "approved" list of causes, so if the org's primary goal fits under one of these it would be more likely to be approved:

• The creation of a more sustainable environment

• The improvement of living, working or recreational environment

• Health and safety improvements

• Educational improvements for children and/or adults

• The improvement of employ-ability skills, either within or outside of the educational system and particularly for those who are disadvantaged

Donating to a 501(c)(3) doesn't actually support a charitable cause, you're just supporting some guy's salary to maintain minimal affected party's payouts.

Tried to explain in the title as best as possible. You're better off giving your money to a friend or family member who is struggling or going through difficult times. Wounded Warrior Project is a prime example. More often than not, they give enough to maintain their charitable cause tax stamp, and the front offices are walking away collecting six figure salaries.

If anything, find something extremely small, or local that is tax exempt.

Fact check: it absolutely does NOT cost $25k to start a 501(c)3 but it DOES require you to be completely transparent with your funds

Owen is straight-up lying about it costing $25k to start a 501(c)3, and it’s another one of these lies that’s disproven with one google search.

The actual number is well under $1k. https://www.501c3.org/irs-lowers-filing-fees-new-501c3-applicants/ If the barrier to entry were that high, there would be no tiny churches, home ministries, or upstart charities. The real filing fee is certainly within grasp

If it costs $25k, why do a lot of charities file for 501(c)3 before they start major fundraising? So donations can be tax-exempt, and people know they’re not dealing with some swindler!

The filing process takes a while but is not outright costly. HOWEVER, filing as a 501(c)3 opens you to a whole world of transparency requirements that would mean Owen couldn’t just use the Beartaria donations for whatever he wants at any moment.

Also not filing allows Owen to complain about donations being taxed “at 40%,” versus if he spent $275-600 to file as a nonprofit, where it would be untaxed but have to actually be used on land.

Donating stonks to 501(c)3 nonprofits/charity is tax deductible

Not financial advice, talk to your accountant first or YOLO!

When you donate appreciated securities to a 501(c)3 you can potentiall offset your capital gains taxes by the fair marker value of that donation at time of donation.

Something to remember when you sell and take your gains. So start looking for your favorite charity that accepts stocks and hit them up about donating.

Not only will you save on your taxes, but you’ll also get to support whatever cause you care about.

Community Garden & Agriculture Advocacy Non-profit: 501(c)3 or 501(c)4?

Hi all, I'm looking to start a non-profit that focuses on improving community gardening and urban agriculture, either directly with the gardens themselves, with schools & education programs, or with local governments. We will not be starting our own garden, but be more of an advocacy/research/education-programming group. I'm looking for some advice since all of us in the group are practitioners and no one has set up their own non-profit as of yet. We'll be filing for incorporation in NY state.

So in terms of filing with the IRS, it's a little confusing; I've looked into the definitions of both types and am wondering if the local-government work would disqualify us from 501(c)3 status. If you think we still qualify for 501(c)3, then does that still let us use the 1023EZ Form?

The other items should be straightforward; I just know this is a big one on how we define ourselves at the get-go. Thanks and appreciate any advice.

Does work abroad for a US based 501(c)(3) count?

Hi fellow PSLFers,

I have been working toward PSLF for 11 years. 2020 gave my spouse and I some time to re-evaluate our lives and have decided we would like to live abroad/outside the US for a few years. I am hopeful that my current employer would be open to continuing my employ while working virtually (as I have been doing successfully since March). I haven't been able to find anything that says it would be problematic to live outside the US while working for a US based 501(c)(3) for PSLF purposes. Also, would it matter if my average work hours reduced from 40 to 30 with the same employer? Does anyone happen know or have any information on this?

I am closing in on my full PSLF (about 2 years - I still have quite a fight on some "ineligible payments" that should count and would make it sooner). I hate to lose all of the progress I have made toward forgiveness. At the same time I don't want to NOT go solely based on my possible loan forgiveness since nothing is guaranteed with PSLF.

Any thoughts/advice are welcome!

Thanks!

Meghan

Changing the mission of a 501(c)3?

Hello,

My parents started a small non-profit 10 years ago to provide meals to the homeless in our city. They had monetary donations mostly from their church and friends for ingredients and all the preparation, distribution and overall management was done by volunteers. My parents recently retired and have moved to a small town about 3 hours from the city. Without their leadership and coordination, the non-profit activities stopped.

Through some mutual friends, they have gotten connected to an orphanage in South America being run by a nuns. And now they would like to change the mission of their non-profit from feeding the homeless to helping orphans. Their circle of friends, who funded the non-profit are happy with this change and would be happy to continue to donate.

What do they need to do in the eyes of the IRS?

The conceit of the league is simple, during the offseason, the members raise funds to benefit causes that grow the game among young people. In March, we have a live, in person auction draft weekend in Lexington, KY. I have a bunch of fun events planned.

I'm looking for people with a passion for fantasy baseball (experience levels of all kinds wanted, but this is planned to be an involved league (daily lineups etc.) and a desire to work to grow the game.

The fantasy community is growing rapidly and I think it has the chance to do something great.

For more information feel free to message me on reddit, check out the website, www.bourbonbarrelleague.com follow the league on Twitter @barrelleague or email me at [email protected]
